Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Civic is Honda’s compact car that is offered in sedan and coupe versions. First introduced as a small, inexpensive hatchback in 1972, the Civic has increased in size during its lifetime while continuing to offer excellent fuel economy. The entire Civic line was all-new for 2006.

The basic Civic is available as a sedan and coupe and comes in several trims: DX, DX-VP, LX-S, EX and EX-L. The Civic SI, the performance-oriented trim, offers 57 more horsepower than the base model, a few more performance options and a starting price of around $7,000 more than the base Civic.

The Civic also comes in two eco-friendly options: the Honda Civic Hybrid, which is reviewed separately, and the GX, a hybrid alternative that runs on Compressed Natural Gas. Unfortunately the GX is only sold in California (and other states that have accepted California's Zero-Emission Vehicle regulations). It costs about $10,000 more than a base Civic.

Model Reviewed: DX

Strength:

smooth shifting for the first 3-4 months that you buy the vehicle

Weakness:

engine noise, slow acceleration, horrible shifting

I bought an automatic 2000 DX. Please do not buy a DX. Very slow accelerating on the freeway. Revs a lot, even at low speeds. The car is only a year old, but I think it has transmission problems already. I'm looking for the cheapest economy car that would still be a good deal.

Model Reviewed: LX Automatic

Strength:

Handling, smooth ride, great brakes, nice interior, and dependability. Well thought out placement of controls and instrumentation. Refined.

Weakness:

Windows are anemic and go out of track, gutless (especially with A/C on), and small fuel tank. Noise is loud on course pavement and it is too low to the ground-hard to get in and out of. Oil filter makes a mess on the back of the engine and exhaust when you remove it.

Worth the extra money over the competition. Great for a nice commuter, but around town-too gutless. Some quirks with the power windows, but mostly good engineering and craftsmanship. Would like to try the 159hp SI car, that might make it more fun. I would buy it again if I wanted that class of car, but maybe the EX as a minimum. Also, insurance is higher on this car than most others I have driven...must be stolen a lot for those snazzy looks. Good luck!

Model Reviewed: Honda Civic

Strength:

Reliability and low operating costs. Doesn't need many repairs or use much gas.

Weakness:

Doesn't handle well. It seems like it wanders around on the road without constant attention to the steering.

I bought this Honda used seven years ago with 50,000 miles on it. Now it has 220,000 miles on it and I am about to trade it in on a newer model. I have never had a major repair on this car, only the usual tires, brakes, mufflers, batteries, etc.

If you don't have a lot of money, and need a reliable car, I would certainly recommend Honda's Civic line. This one has sure been good to me. There may be small cars with cheaper initial cost, but in the long run the Civic will cost less.

I would rate it as somewhat better than the Toyota Tercel that preceded it.

Model Reviewed: Honda Civic Si

Strength:

Good looks, high build quality, highly modifiable, good gas mileage.

Weakness:

Must use 93 octane gas (if it was a Porsche or Corvette, I'd understand this), must get into high RPM range to achieve peak performance (thereby subjecting the engine and transmission to more wear not to mention lower fuel mileage), torque steer, tired of teenie boppers wanting to race me all the time.

For the money, this isn't a bad car. The aftermarket options for it are too numerous to list. Unfortunately, there are some drawbacks: I hate pushing that 93 button instead of the 87 button at the gas station; the torque band is extremely narrow, in other words, you really have to rev the engine hard to get good throttle response; also, like virtually all FWD cars, the torque steer is REALLY annoying.

As a corollary, with all due respect to you tunerheads out there, I really despise the fact that every time I stop at a light with one of you in your tricked-out, daddy's money, have-no-savings-whatsoever rigs, you feel the need to screech out and race me when the light turns green. Granted, I thought about doing some mods to my ride also, but I decided to save my money, keep my warranty intact, and pay off the Si ASAP so I could get some serious grown-up transportation (new Corvette) and show the teenie boppers what real major-league acceleration is all about. Heck, that stock Corvette would probably cost thousands less overall than the modified rice rockets I see on the road and it would still burn them all off the line every time.

Model Reviewed: EX Coupe

Strength:

Gas mileage, reliablibility (nothing wrong except in "Weaknesses" below...), Resale. I bought it for around $17K and after almost 4 years later, can still get $10K for trade-in. Buy the EX model for resale (fully loaded). It's worth it.

Weakness:

The only two glitches are:
1. During highway driving at night, I notice the lights (dash and headlights) sporadically dim, but just barely. It's not very noticeable, and it happens only once in awhile.
2. There was a high-pitch squealing noise coming from the front wheel-well. It would happen at random times. I brought it in and the mechanic reached inside the wheel-well and bent a piece of metal back. Solved problem.

Have thoroughly enjoyed my Civic for the last 3.5 years. Bought it new and currently have 41,000 miles on it. The only mistake I made was buying a 2-door. I have music equipment that I haul around to shows, and my next purchase will definitely be a 4-door.
