Strength:

The gauges are fast looking and are all in good locations. The car will out handle any car i race (except the aws prelude). Mine is a 2.3l non v-tech and will out run about anything i jump on. The seats give a race cockpit feeling. The stereo is also great, I have a 6 disk changer in mine. I hav had a jet ecu computer upgrade and a few small engine mods and am runnig about 134 top end. Great torque in take off.

Weakness:

I have trouble looking through the trunck to back up. No back seat room, but if you want a back seat buy a sedan not a sports car.

I paid 11,000.00 for mine in 99
would recomend to anybody. Great all around.

Strength:

Nothing

Weakness:

This car is slow ugly and handles poorly

This car doesn't even belong in the sports car world. In fact, Honda doesn't belong in the sports car world. No jap car company does. They just don't understand what a real sports car is about. And they never will. Thats why I will never buy another jap car.

Model Reviewed: Honda Prelude Si 4WS

Strength:

Looks and decent performance. 4WS is amazing. If you know someone with this car, ask for a ride sometime....you won't be let down!

Weakness:

The number one weakness about this car is the Oil consumption. I have had other issues (alt and radiator) but mainly because it has over 150,000 miles.

Paid 4500. That's about 2000 below retail value. I will wind up putting that much back into it though since the previous owner didn't maintain it that well.
Since I am a Prelude fanatic (hondaprelude.com), I would recommend any Prelude to everyone. Plus since this is the 4WS model, I would recommend everyone atleast take a ride. It feels awesome!.
Contact me on AOL's AIM (Daily Interlude) if you want to talk about Preludes. Make sure to check out hondaprelude.com also.

Similar Products Used:

1987 Honda Prelude Si - it only feels a little faster but that's only because it's heavier (esp with 4WS).
1997 Honda Civic LX - no comparison in any department really.

Model Reviewed: Si 4WS

Strength:

It's a great looker. Very sleek and smooth shape. I get comments all the time and the car is nearly 10 years old! It's done 136,000kms (85,000miles) and still loves to rev out to the 6500 rpm redline. The duco and interior look almost brand-new which is a testament to Honda build quality. It handles brilliantly and is great after 4000 rpm, 4WS makes everyone an expert parker everytime. I get good mileage out of it even when driven hard which is a bonus. The shift action is precise and accurate.

Weakness:

The suspension lacks travel (which helps handling) but shakes the fillings out of your teeth when you hit a pot-hole. Jingling noise in rear suspension over bumpy roads which appears to be a design flaw.
Clutch shudder on cold mornings, expensive parts, and lack of power below 3500rpm.
For those looking to enhance performance, I would recommend a 2-2.5 inch cat-back sports exhaust system and a K&N air-filter. After fitting these to my car there has been a noticeable performance increase and the flatspot between 3000-3500 rpm has disappeared.

I love this car! I paid AUD$15,500 a year ago. It puts a great big smile on my face everytime I drive it. It's addictive. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to enjoy their driving with good value. It's not overly powerful but powerful enough to have a some fun.

Mazda RX-7. Handles like a go-cart but drinks like a fish. Another great car but lacking the versatility and practicality of the Prelude. Parts are even dearer.

Strength:

great economy, handling for a front wheel drive (4ws) is great for parking,
high reving motor that likes to be reved out right to the redline everytime

Weakness:

honda motors are beuatiful free spining motors with impressive power from such a small powerplant naturally asperated 2.0l. imagine what they would be like with a turbo!!!, there is no factory or aftermarket turbo available

get one. 5

RX-7 compares to it. It is faster but needs a big mac to do it and major rotor problem e.g water seals can occur, hondas a time seem understructable compared with rx7

Strength:

Four wheels steering phenomenal handling. The car feels strong. Fit and finish is flawless.

Weakness:

Steering is heavy despite top shape geometry. Needs constant driver input to keep it straigh below the 60mph mark. The road feel is confident only over legal speed!!! Prone to rust. Some parts are ATV size.

A bit overprized for an 1988 (paid 5000 $CAN in 1997) but a strong pedigree with a sole owner (to be considered). Avoid any second owner vehicule unless meticulously maintained. Use top quality replacement parts especially in steering and suspension area.

Model Reviewed: Prelude S

Strength:

handling, smoooooth 5 speed, put's an ear to ear grin on my face when I drive it

Weakness:

poor carb design goes bad easily and as a result I get MAYBE 15 mpg. lack of power on this older model

don't get me wrong, I absolutely love preludes. But I was dumb when I bought this car because I didn't know that it was carburated. in the late 80's honda made their carbs way overcomplicated to try to comply with toughening emissions laws. as a result the carbs went very bad, very quickly. I get the fuel efficiency of a suburban. so if all you can afford is an older prelude, be DAMN sure to get the fuel injected SI model.
otherwise, it's a cheap, fun, nimble little bugger that's a blast to drive

Model Reviewed: Prelude Si

Strength:

This car is one of the best. Great acceleration(can't really do much better with a 4 cylinder, S2000 maybe..). Awesome handling! I drove all the cars listed, and chose the Prelude over all of them(MR-2 Turbo was tied with the Prelude, insurance is cheaper on the 'lude and longevity-the engine is N/A vs MR2's turbo)
Gas mileage is good(20-27MPG), unless you're racing(13-18MPG)...then it's still marginally better than a Dodge Dakota V8
People usually do a double take when they hear the car is a '92, they can't believe it's that old. The car was well ahead of it's time in '92 and is just now being caught up to by newer cars in terms of refinement and engineering.

Weakness:

No Cupholder!
Headlights are very expensive to replace(~$600)
Backseat is for looks only
Might need a paint job if it's as old as mine(9 years old), paint was chipped/dinged as expected
A/C acts up occasionally, something wrong with wiring I think(easy to fix by restarting the car)
BTW, No Cupholder!
Top Speed is only 140MPH(/w aftermarket air intake)...not sure if this is a weakness though.
0-60MPH ~6.7 seconds(still pretty good for a N/A 4 cylinder)
Can be outran by a Corvette, Cobra, and Z-28, oh well, can't have everything...

I bought my Prelude(used) in August '99 from a Toyota Dealer at wholesale(A/C was broken, dealer fixed), previous owner had a fenderbender in a parking lot but was fixed very well. I had an accident in the Sept '00 due to some dumb@ss cutting me off, luckily I had racing brakes installed 2 months before and the car only suffered damage to the front assembly(which btw is really expensive to replace~$5,000) thanks to my car nearly stopping on a dime or bumper I should say. The only real complaint I have about the Prelude is that it has no cupholders! That little square in the center won't hold a cup in place when you stop the car. Besides the lack of a decent cupholder, I love the car. If you get one, don't expect to carry any passengers in that back seat, it's there for looks only and serves only as cargo room. If you don't normally carry passengers(more than 1)or have a cupholder fetish than I would definately recommend this fine piece of engineering.

1994 Chevrolet Camaro Z-28(insane insurance and guzzles gas)
1995 Ford Mustang GT(insurance, gas, feels clunky compared to prelude)
1992 Ford Mustang GT(insurance, gas)
1991 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4(insurance, gas, very heavy)
1991 Toyota MR-2 Turbo(prelude actually has more room than this car and costs less to repair, insurance is higher on MR-2 Turbo but is definately worth considering if you can find one in good condition)
1994 Toyota Supra(high insurance, great car, out of my price range being a college student)
1993 Mazda RX-7(insurance, reliability isn't good)
1994 Mazda Miata(see Del Sol)
1992 BMW 325i(expensive repair costs, alot heavier)
1999 Dodge Dakota V8(guzzles gas like there's no tomorrow)
