Mazda 626 (1979 - 2002) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Mazda 626 is a mid-size model that carries the authority of being fully imported from Japan. Built to a high standard, it is frequently reported by its owners to be trouble free for years on end.

The Mazda 626 is offered as a four-door sedan with 2 engine options; a 2.0-liter, 125-hp 4-cylinder or a 2.5-liter, 170-hp V-6. Also choose between a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. ABS is standard.

The 626 replaced the 616/618 and RX-2 in 1979 and was sold through 2002, when the new Mazda6 took over as Mazda's large family car.

Strength:

Sharp looking and simply elagent. Good road car with sport suspension and wider alloy wheels/tires. Respectable power and quiet, comfortable interior and amenities. Power Moonroof a plus for interior comfort. Fold down rear seat huge plus for ski trips and large items.

Weakness:

Really dumb cup holder position makes it useless. Rear brake calipers needed replacement with brake pads since they wouldn't reopen to accept the new pads probably from moisture in the brake lines.

My LX is nearly loaded with available options including ABS, dual air bags, performance handling package, power moonroof, power everything, and yes, the automatic 4 spd. transmission. The only optionss lacking are leather interior and a CD player.

After 3+ years and 68k total miles(45k of mine), I have few complaints with the car. I have had only one unusual maintnance problem and that was a shorted spark plug wire which caued a engine miss under load while I was on vacation. Out of state Dealer diagnosed and replaced the wires for $175 which I considered resonable. Most of my milage has been on highway as I commute on train daily. I have had an occasional engine light in the mountains uphill under load which was traced to O2 sensor needing replacement. Fuel milage is 23+ in the city and 27+ highway, not bad with the v6. I have read some complaints with the fuel/RPM requirements of the v6 but it would seem that most people do not seem to understand the needs of a small displacement, high reving, high compression engine any more. Such are the anemic times we live in.

So far, I haven't found the 626 expensive or problimatic to own. However, I am known to be relativly easy on a car, practice a maintnance schedule more extensive than most and do my own work. To date, the maintnance/repars to the car have averaged under $250 per year which is reasonable for a 7 year old car. The trade in is still more than half of what I paid for it and I expect to run it for another few years before finding something else.

fast, smooth that's about it.

Weakness:

something goes wrong on this car every week. I would never reccomend this car to anyone. it was the worst mistake I ever made. Right now it's in the shop having the transmission replaced which is going to cost me way more than it's worth. I can't believe that a company would put out such a terrible car and continue to be in business. The sunroof is broken, the passenger door lock is broken, the antenna and cassette deck are broken, the power windows have broken on several occasions. Parts are so expensive I could have bought a mercedes by now and I still owe money on this peice of crap. If your in the market for a 93 mazda 626es V6, don't pay more than 1000 for it because you'll be sorry!

This is the only consolation I have recieved, being able to voice my complaint here, but please whatever you do don't buy this car. It's a major blemish on mazda's track record.

Strength:

ver reliable, and dependable. with a turbo-charged GT engine the car can take on tough rides. Great in passing trucks and huge vehicles! Great in catching yellow lights before going red!. very few major repairs. strong engine and very reliable manual transmission.

Weakness:

burns extra oil. I guess all Mazdas do even the new ones. It's got an oil leakage now due to age. I keep maintaining the oil level.

I've had this great car for 2 years and a half sofar. It's been a great street fighter!. I call it the red Stallion. I bought it for $1600 when it had a 120,000 miles on it. During the past 2 1/2 years I have put extra 51,000 miles on it traveling all over the states!. No problems.... what soever on the hi-ways. It's just great and considerably fast! the Turbo charged engine needs an oil change every 7,500 miles but I do it every 3,000 or little more anyways. I put an average 1,700 miles a month on it.. again no big deal for this great GT engine! The only major problem I had to fix was repairing the front CV joints and partial parts of the front axel. Reason was, I drove into a ditch at night once in kansas City!! there were no traffic warning signs or nothing! I almost sued the state.... other than that, I've always made oil-changes and Tune-ups if needed, by doing it myself. The red stallion Lives!! it survives.. The red Stallion Rocks!! I definitely, certainly, aggressively, effectively and absolutely recommend it ..................

its looked pretty since i bought the car. sound system has been upgraded to a Sony unit. Interior is excellent,,other than a 2 inch cracked that the suncreated over time,,, Has 238400 miles on it,,,but im the 2nd owner . I bought this car from the orginal owner,,,,He paid 7000 for it brand new.

Weakness:

Only problem I ve had so far was the water pump and the cv joints..Car never stranded me,,,,which has been really good compared to some others cars thats left me calling triple aaa,,,and we all knows how long wait for there services,,,,,hahahahaaha

Its also a 5 spd. Drives great,,, little slow from 1-3 but after 45mph its easy sailing. Espeically since I ve upgraded the rims& tires to Enkes low profile tires(45's series) Handles corners in 4th gear with no problem. If anyone interested i buying,,email me Jvibe1@aol.com

A/C only had to service one time in 10 years, in Texas it's HOT!!

Weakness:

Breaks! had to replace calibers three times, many new pads.
rear deck lid moulding bad gets water in trunk.
Slight leak in transmission.

Overall I have a very good experience with the car, the total repairs
I paid over 10 years minus oil changes (by the way is free for the life
of the car as long as I own it,by the Dealer)is approx $1200.00.
I believe this make is a good one. On the other hand my neighbor owns
a 97 626 with 57000 miles on it, as you guess it needs a new
transmission, I believe this make is no good. By the way I just bought
my wife a new 2000 626 v6,I guess I'll keep my fingers crossed.

great leg/head room. Comfortable for long rides

Weakness:

only was one month old and needed a new transmission. The car only had approx. 100 miles on it. The car has 11,900 miles on it now (have had it 10 months now) and still has the same problems as the old transmission but because I am a woman complaining to the dealer of course it is all in my head and that there is nothing wrong with my car. My husband and I are dumping this car right before the warrenty is up. At least then we will get our use out of the car if it even makes it that long. What a joke....wisha I coulda shoulda is all we keep saying. Next time an acura or a honda.

Very comfortable for a family car (if you only have two kids). Driver seat is very comfortable for long drives as well as the passanger seat. Plenty of head room and leg room.

Parts are very expensive. I have never paid so much to maintain a car - even cheap North American cars. Distributor failure assured($$$$), poor components include Hand Brake Calipers ($$), power antenna, Radio Cassette, locks, moonroof, AC. Excessive tire wear ($$$). Trading it in at 144K

Attractive, sporty look and feel is soured by the repair bills.

Strength:

This car never fails me, it gets good gas mileage and drives beautifully for an '85 standard transmission. Its taken the PA winters with no problems. If I have a place to go, I can throw my friends in the back and take off, no questions asked. This car also has really great pickup for a 4 cylinder engine. Original everything, minimal maintenance. A great car for first year drivers and once they drive it,, they will have many problems letting her go!

Weakness:

A bit of a bouncy ride, and if your looking for fast acceleration after 75 mph... this is not the car for you, considering it takes like a mile and a half to get up to 115.

I have had the car for about a year and a half now and no problems with it except the brake cable came a little loose about 7 months ago. That was easily fixed and ive had no other problems with it. A great car for an 85... i bought it at 100k miles and its still running great at 115k. i highly recommend this car to parents wanting to buy their kids first cars that will last.. THIS IS THE MODEL FOR YOU.
