Mazda 626 (1979 - 2002) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Mazda 626 is a mid-size model that carries the authority of being fully imported from Japan. Built to a high standard, it is frequently reported by its owners to be trouble free for years on end.

The Mazda 626 is offered as a four-door sedan with 2 engine options; a 2.0-liter, 125-hp 4-cylinder or a 2.5-liter, 170-hp V-6. Also choose between a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. ABS is standard.

The 626 replaced the 616/618 and RX-2 in 1979 and was sold through 2002, when the new Mazda6 took over as Mazda's large family car.

Strength:

Very nice car. Decent power but great milage, and the 5-speed shifts great.
Excellent, comfortable interior design. In very good shape at 160,000 mi., with no major problems and only a couple very minor shakes/rattles. Well equiped-tilt wheel, pwr steering/brakes, AC, cruise, fully adjustable drivers seat, AM/FM cass.-even though it's a base model. Good ride and handling. Nice styling-neither ugly nor ostentatious. Plenty of trunk and interior space for its size.

Weakness:

It could use better instrumentation, and the stereo is a bit on the wimpy side.

Great car! Great value-only $1400, with 160,000 on the car and only 50,000 on a newer motor and tranny.

Similar Products Used:

'87 VW Jetta-fair, but not as nice, and the shifter was lousy.
'85 Honda Accord-better handling, and comperable power, but worse interior.

Strength:

it has some get up and go for a 170-hp...i really like the room it offers...i can fit 5 people in it and they felt comfortable. nice addition when it comes to room. the cabin fits great. did i mention the bose stereo system isn't that bad either. for stock it rocks. its a classy looking car.

Weakness:

haven't found any.

i really like the 2.5-liter, 170-hp V-6 engine in it. it has a smooth look as well. i recommend this car to anyone thats looking for an affordable car. that won't kill your pocket book. i have a silver colored one with 16 inch wheels. they look great. i have got nothing but good comments on it. it reminds me of a small verison mercury LS. but half the price. mazda totally makes great cars. this car is sweet. i have only seen a few around town. and they are all 4 bangers not the V-6.

Strength:

I really liked the factory radio.

Weakness:

The car has a terrible transmission, After 36,000 miles I had to repair the transmission, then again at 56,000 miles, then again at 96,000. The final draw was when the maufacturer told me that I needed to replace the transmission and it would cost me $3,000. The car was my biggest headache and it was even hard trading it in. No one wants it, it is a piece of junk, do not buy one, My cousin has a 1999 626 and she is experiencing some of the same things I did in the beginning, although her car is still under warranty, I have warned her, it is a time bomb waiting to blow!!

No, I would not recommend this car to anyone, unless you havae money to throw away in repairs.

Strength:

Very strong on curves. The acceralation is very quick. It has some juice for a 170 HP block. Like the idea it came with 16 inch tires and nice looking alloy wheels. Very roomy. Passagener fit is very great. Great on gas as well. Trunk is a nice size. I can put my clubs in there and hit up the course in style.

Weakness:

The only thing I don't get is the road nosie. But seeing other reviews at other various sites. I can say it runs very quiet to me. Maybe im lucky. Who knows?

It was my last choice to buy a Mazda. I drove everything from Honda's,Suburu's,Volkwagon's and Mitusbishi's. And had no idea what to do? Then here I was pulling into the Mazda dealer, willing a dealing this car after test driving it for about 3 hours all over town with my dad. It was an amazing ride. It camed pretty loaded as well. Handles great and the new look is pretty nice. I really like it lots. I know now that I will have a very dependable car to last me til I find something else down the road. One word for this car "WOW" whoever would believe I'd own a Mazda 626. I never did. Well thats my summary. If you get one. Enjoy your ride. Mazda's are well built cars. And don't get the credit they greatly deserve.

None to this point. Bottom line this car is affordable. Priced all kinds and this was the best deal for my budget.

Strength:

Styling, a bit more exclusive, major improvements, V6 engine, 16" mags. Fully equipped for the price paid and great deal if you compare the other japanese manufacturers.

Weakness:

So far nothing.

I was looking for a Maxima but it was out of my range. Then I thought about the 626. I shopped around for the best price and finally the last dealer I visited was willing to give it at a price I could afford.
So I just leased this car. 48 months, 0 down, 429 a month tax in.
Great deal.It was the best deal offered among all japanese names. I looked at an Accord but they are just crazy in what they ask. Same for the Camry. I already drive an Altima so did not want another one (besides I do not like the rear end of the new ones). Subaru, forget it. Too much money, no content. Only good part about it is the 4X4.
This car has great handling, is big enough for a family of 4, (bigger than my Altima) has V6 power and all the useful amenities you need and in black it looks very, very good! I like the styling, V6 auto, mags and sound system which for a factory radio it is very good. Also I like the fact that you do not see too many of these on the road. Everyone seems to have either an Accord or Camry so I kind of like everybody looking at my jet black 626.
Mazda makes good cars and it is a shame not everybody considers the 626 when they shop for a new car. A best kept secret.
I definitely recommend it. Did I mention I like the mags?!
