Mazda 626 (1979 - 2002) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Mazda 626 is a mid-size model that carries the authority of being fully imported from Japan. Built to a high standard, it is frequently reported by its owners to be trouble free for years on end.

The Mazda 626 is offered as a four-door sedan with 2 engine options; a 2.0-liter, 125-hp 4-cylinder or a 2.5-liter, 170-hp V-6. Also choose between a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. ABS is standard.

The 626 replaced the 616/618 and RX-2 in 1979 and was sold through 2002, when the new Mazda6 took over as Mazda's large family car.

price/value, interior & trunk room, seating and controls

Weakness:

Transmission, Brakes and most of all help from the company. Calling and faxing my concerns to Company head quarter in CA took me nowhere, even though defects were backed by K-mart, Midas etc and the car was under warranty.

If price and price only is the deciding factor, go for it, otherwise you can get far better value, service, and performance from Toyota or Honda. Just look at the resell value for them, it's a whole lot more than Mazda.

Strength:

fun to drive, good looks, quite powerful for an 88' 4 cylinder. great gas mileage

Weakness:

reliability, craftsmanship(constantly falling apart). something always seemed to be going wrong. i replaced, a power window switch, alternator(twice), O2 sensor, brakes and drums, radiator, starter(never fixed), rear bumper was falling off. exhaust made a rattling noise over even the smallest of bumps. power sunroof sometimes would work sometimes it wouldn't(it didn't like to close), customer service is beyond terrible.

i was sixteen and visiting the local dealerships with my parents when the salesman brought around this sporty little car. i fell in love with it instantly. it had power windows, power sunroof, a/c, 5 speed, and just plain looked cool. it had 100k miles on it but hey it's a mazda it should last forever. Boy was i wrong. it seemed like as soon as we signed on the dotted line things started to fall apart. not very noticable at first but things became gradually worse. my insurance rates were terrible since they classified it as a sports car. this car is a 626 with two doors and a spoiler. the interior fell apart first, then i failed my emissions test twice in a row. the first time it was the O2 sensor the second time it was similar. both times costing me a bundle. the starter stopped working. it would sometimes start other times it would just click. i took it into the Mazda dealer. they said they fixed it but that there wasn't a whole lot they could do. this was just something i would have to live with. what a load of crap!!! I soon found a reputable mechanic who let me in on how i got screwed. the radiator went next springing a leak and making nice marks all over my girlfriends driveway. when i took it into the shop my mechanic informed me that the clutch was just about to die. I got rid of it soon after that. The best thing about that car is that i got in great shape riding my bike everyday.

Great build Quality, the handleing Is great!! It huggs the road on twisty turns, and has great driver feel wich translates into driver confidence!!!

Weakness:

The 2.0L 4 banger Is under powered, If I could do It over again I would definently go for the v-6.. Other wise no complaints.

I think this Is A great pice Of machinery, Mazda has A very good Track record with Reliability! I have 42,000 miles on my car and not A single problem! The next purches I plan to make will be A suv, but I will most certinly check out the new Mazda one...I paid 19,200 for the car....

Strength:

history for reliability, value, attention to detail, good sound system, nice paint, superior handling

Weakness:

kinda plain exterior (but still jazzier than a honda or toyota), sluggish 2.0 with auto, ABS optional

I bought mine used with a window sticker of $15,590. I had been looking at the new grand ams but couldn't find a dealer who would take the sky high price of 20K+ down to a reasonable amount. Mine is a very pretty metallic beige and it looks more expensive than it is. It has the Luxury package which helps make it a much more interesting car. I am a bit disappointed with the acceleration of my little 2.0 with an automatic. Speaking of the trans, I hope all the horror stories about the 4cyl automatic aren't true. The 626 handles great though. I was suprised to find out after I bought it, ABS is optional, so I don't have it. Nice car in general though.

interior is a little lacking in the aesthetics. Nissan Altima from same year is much better.

This car was a great deal for me, but I was not that impressed with the engine. That is, untill I drove it. It can actually get away from you if you don't pay attention. A great car for city or highway.

Strength:

Value, build quality, reliability. The hood is very heavy and solid. The doors close with the sound of a much more expensive car. The seats are very comfortable and the I4 auto is very capable on the highway, though I really wanted the V6 with the manual trans.

Weakness:

Mazda dealers and their service departments. I've owned many great Mazdas, but I've often been very disappointed with their dealer network. Usually, either the salesmen or service managers are unfriendly or not trustworthy. There are good Mazda dealerships out there, but I feel only about 25% are at the level they should be. Definately not the same treatment one would get at a Lexus, BMW, or MB dealership.

My family and I are Honda and Mazda people. We've owned many of both and have always been very happy with either makes. We hold both the Accord, Camry and 626 at the same level of quality and reliability, but the Honda and Toyota usually have much better resale value, therefore we got a much better deal with the 626 as a used car.

Strength:

Value, car has no glaring weaknesses

Weakness:

Unexciting. Enthusiasts will likely find it too dull.

I went shopping for a mid-sized sedan with a V6 almost a year ago. I drove the Accord, Camry, Galant, Passat, Taurus and 626. I also drove the Altima which was nice but the engine was too rough and weak. I wanted something quiet and comfortable for my 50 miles/day commute to work, and wanted leather interior and automatic tranny (I sometimes sit in rush hour traffic). I liked the feel of the Camry and 626 better than the rest, both felt more "solid" compared to the others. I was particularly disappointed in the Accord, having owned 2 Hondas in the past. The substantial discounts available on the 626 made it several thousand less than the Camry, so it became an easy choice. In fact the 626 was the least expensive to actually purchase of all the cars I drove except the Altima. While the MSRPs are comparable, a $2000 factory to dealer rebate on the 626 was in effect when I was shopping.

After having owned it almost a year, I have no regrets about having purchased it. The car isn't perfect, however, and here is my list of shortcommings, all of which are minor: With the auto tranny, the V6 doesn't pull terribly strong from a standing start. If you like to drag race from stoplights, get the manual, it pulls much harder. Passing power, however, is ample with the automatic. At low speed the upshift from 1st to 2nd is sometimes accompianied by a hard thud if you happen to be decelerating when the shift occurs. This problem applies only to the automatic and can be eliminated by disabling the overdrive with the button on the shifter. The only comfort/convience feature I think is missing from this car is a thermometer. I simply added an after-market unit for

Great car for students or just commuting. Know of 4 626s that have lasted well into the 100,000+ range without any major repairs. Had a great time with mine, especially with a manual. Pushed it all the time and it responded quite well.
