Strength:

Good gas mileage

Weakness:

Very poorly designed and built

Like a previous reviewer, the power brake vacuum line broke on this car. Upon removal I discovered it had been broken and patched before I got the car. What a pathetic design. A moron could have come up with something better. The fuel pump/sending unit assy has been replaced twice. The rear wheel bearing assemblies have been replaced as they are non-serviceable. Pure throw-away car. Just like the same year Contours. Enough to make me never buy another Ford product again, and I have owned Fords for 50 years! I can't and don't believe that this is a true Ford design, it has to be something like the Aspire (Kia) with a Blue Oval attached. Pure Junk.

Hmmm. It was a smooth ride if you were going over sixty. I never had to replace anything, but then again I only had it for two months. I put up with it, I mean it got you from Point A to Point B with minimal problems. If you were like me, then Its a good first car or a student car. You know, something that you use to really get a feel for real driving.

Weakness:

My engine was a 4 cylinder with HORRIBLE acceleration. I mean it goes 0-60 in like 12 seconds. Also the cupholders are a pain. (see Review Summary).

I bought this car from a mechanic for $2000 dollars. Thats pretty good considering it had 60,000 miles on the new engine. I was 17, So I thought 'why not'. I saw that everyone else didnt like it, and Im kinda indifferent about it When I had it, I liked it because it was my first real car, not my parents or brothers or sisters. I drove it alot before it totaled. I drove it pretty hard. It had slow accelleration, which kind of upset me, but once it get up to 80 it was a smooth ride. Handling wasnt too bad. The interior was kinda small, but Im 6'1 so maybe thats why. If your like 5'5 then Im sure youll have no problems. The cupholders. OMG what can I say about those crappy stock cupholders. My mom broke the passenger side one BEFORE I even bought the car. The second one broke like a week later. I really only had this car for 2 months before It got hit by a minivan and totaled. I was just getting used to it. It takes a while really, but after that, its like Driving a MAzda. An antiquated, slower MAzda.

Great Engine

Weakness:

Everything else

Bought my 1995 Mystique 4 years ago from a friend’s mother for $3900. I needed 4 doors to accommodate my aging parents and the car was in great shape with only 32,000 miles (now 95,000 miles). The V6 has plenty of power (helped along with a K&N air filter) and very reasonable mileage (23 city, 27 on cruise at a constant 75mph). Handling is very good, but I think it’s a bit “twitchy” – probably better on European curves than American super slab. Downside – like everyone else – leaking trunk, constantly illuminated “check engine” light, rear doors that squeak (no matter how much grease, Teflon, or silicone is applied), door locks and all 4 doors that freeze in the winter, lousy cup holders, no “low gas” light complicated by the fact that ¼ tank means 1.5 gallons (ALWAYS set the trip odometer), brake pads that last about 30,000 miles max. Some unusual things - NEVER leave the engine running and shut the door to pickup the newspaper – about 1 out of 5 times the doors will lock on their own leaving you looking pretty stupid until you learn to carry a spare key in your wallet. I just got done doing the front brakes – figuring a rotor was warped due to a vibration on braking – but no – the vibration was the result of a piece of rotor about the size of my little finger that RUSTED OFF (I also love the 7mm hex wrench you need to remove the caliper). Biggest peeve – I hate the headlight switch on the dash even though you select the high beams with the turn signal lever – PUT EM IN THE SAME PLACE – ONE OR THE OTHER! The last Ford I owned was a 1972 Pinto 2 Liter – a great car (except for their tendency to explode in rear enders) that had zero repairs in the 100,000 miles I owned it (just changed the oil, plugs, and brake pads) The worst car I’ve ever owned was a 1977 Chevy Pickup – everything broke on that – and all out of warranty. Bottom line, Ford had the chassis to build a great car and chose to make a mediocre one – too bad. The new Mustang looks really nice, but as soon as it stops snowing around here, I’ll be driving a Scion Tc.

If someone offers to sell you this car, RUN! Run as far and as fast as you can. I bought this car brand new and had no problems for the first 3 years. In the last 2 years I've had major electrical problems that have cost me an outrageous amount to have fixed. Had to have the alternator replaced 4 months ago. It fell apart when the mechanic took it off. Also had to have a bad relay replaced and a new blower put in. Now, as I am writing this, I am sitting at home missing another day of work because when I tried to start it this morning all I got was some flickering of lights then total nothing. Guess I'll have to have it towed to the mechanics again. I will never buy another Ford product again. Ford knew that this car was nothing but a big problem, that's why they stopped making them.

Made In Mexico ! Looks Great ! Runs Reliably and cheaply ! Fun To Drive !

Weakness:

Premature tranny rebuild at 95000 miles and only 6 years old ! Lousy Cup Holder design !

I already wrote my review. I have subsequently read the other reviews which are either love or hate. How many of you haters bought a used car ? How many with Leaks were 'Previously Wrecked' and stitched back together ? The repair problems - find a good private Ford mechanic, avoid dealers who want to sell you a new car. And to the guy whose tranny blew immediately after buying the car used, YOU WERE SET UP ! Always hire a mechanic to go over the car before buying someone elses neglected heap, no matter what brand of car you buy. I bought this car new and had only one repair a transmission rebuild at 95,000 miles. Otherwise only normal maintenance and wear and tear. This car is fun to drive (with a V-6) looks great and uses very little gas. That includes No Leaks, No Noises, No Rattles and everything works after 6.5 years and 95000 miles. Those Mexicans sure know how to build a car !

Strength:

Handles like fun, excellent visibility all around, comfortable seats, good mileage, very reliable car, everybody can work on a Ford product, cabin air filter.

Weakness:

Cup holders inadequate, outside mirrors should be 50% larger, needed a sony stereo with 10 disc changer and better speakers.

This car currently has 96000 mi. LS with V-6. Still fun to drive. Replaced orig brake pads after 10K, redid entire brakes at 95,000 miles for the 1st time. I never let anyone tighten the wheel lugs except me and my torque wrench ( 85 ft.lbs.) that's why I never had a warped rotor. Struts are still fine front and rear, car still handles and rides like new. Only repair was Automatic Trans rebuild at 95,000, blew second gear band.

Strength:

Handling, decent power and fuel economy, roomy front seats

Weakness:

leaky trunk lid, really cheap cupholders, somewhat of and "old persons car", so tough to find aftermarket upgrades

I don't know why so many people are having trouble with the mystique. I've had it for a little over a year now and it's still running great. I got the car from my grandparents, it was my grandma's car but she only put 15K on it in like seven years so it was practically brand new. It seems to have pretty decent power for the V6 and it's pretty quick off the line. The trunk does leak when it rains and the back doors get stuck really stuck in the winter but other than that I really like it. It's pretty roomy inside and I was surprised by the quality of the stereo. So far i've replaced the tires(put all weather performance michellin's on it and it handles even better), and the windshield wipers. Overall it is a pretty good buy if you buy used, decent on gas and it handles really well around town with pretty good power.

Weakness:

no power, and better yet, no transmission

I've had this car for 1 and a half years with nothing but problems. The ol' Mercury Mistake. Mechanics make fun of me for owning this car. I got this car for getting my license from my grandparents. Who wanted to put me into a nicer car since i had a job at the time. So we buy this car with bad rear struts already. Get those replaced, then all the problems. Hole in the muffler, radiator hose splits (while driving), camshaft bearings, serpentine belt, air conditioning, electrical problems (car would die and winshield wipers would turn on), breaks always go out, and besides, now that the transmission completely went out i'm junking it, YAY! I also own a 1984 Z28 Camaro with a brand new transmission. I'm gonna burn out in gravel right in front of that mystique then light it on fire. Never buy a Mercury Mistake unless you like older male mechanics poking fun at you.
