comfortable seating.. ummmm... that's about all I can think of.

Weakness:

recalls engine gas mileage brakes tires

This is the worst car I've ever owned. It goes through tires and gas so fast! I only get about 8-9 gallons of gas use then the car acts like it's out of gas and comes to a stop. I've had the major tune-up done and the fuel pump checked. Nobody can find out what's wrong with it. Also the back door leaks and so does the trunk. I'm stuck with it... I don't like the position of the A/C vents, I can't get the air to blow on the driver. I can't even get any money on trade-in. Had the bad dash melting problem which was recalled. They installed a different color and tried to convince me that was the original color and that the sun lightened the REST of the interior.. I realize I'm blonde.. but geez. I'm not blind. The dealership was fine until I signed on the dotted line. I could not get any service satisfaction from them. I have changed dealerships and have refused all correspondence from Energy County Ford. I also reported them to Ford Company.

Strength:

The interiors are really comfortable, with bucket seats that are really soft. It has a good soundsystem too, and even the 4-cylinder automatic has some good acceleration in first gear, but the power ends at first...and the defroster is really good.

Weakness:

It has really horrible gas milage, the brakes get really shaky and weak when pressed too hard (like with antilock brakes activated), the recalls are irritating, the cupholders are useless, the gears shift in a weird pattern, and the gears shift at unnecessary times. The AC isn't cold no matter how many times I fix it, and the car spontaneously shuts off while being driven, which can be potentially dangerous in city traffic.

This car is a junk trap. It was bought for me by my parents, and they thought it was some great deal. It not only has more recalls then humanly possible, it rattles, has really bad gear-shifting, and eats gas like mad. The gas-milage is horrible. The recalls make me so angry, and cost me a lot of money, since the warrenties don't apply to anything that needs to be changed. The dashboard got recalled, and replaced, and now is a different color than the rest of my interior because they don't have the same color anymore. Further inconveniences regard the gear shifts, which are slow and cumbersome. The brakes basically gave out a few days ago. The most annoying part of the car is how it shuts off from time to time while it's being driven. While in a different city than I live in, in main-stream traffic, the car shut off, losing all power, but still in gear. I had to push it to the side so that I didn't get rear-ended. It has done this shutting-off number a few times, and each time makes me dislike the car more and more. Oh, it has 3 cupholders, which are virtually useless. They are all too small and have little space above them, which means that drinks from fast-food restaurants are too tall to fit. Yeah, that really bugs. Even still, the AC was defective, and the car would surge forward when I was stopped, which was a hassle when I almost hit the car in front of me a few times. The AC had to be serviced, which wasn't under warrenty. Besides that, the main problems are the recalls.

DO NOT BUY THIS CAR! Purchased in 2001 with 43,000 miles and in great condition. I bought it from my mother-in-law who did not experience many problems. As soon as I bought it all hell broke loose. Recalls galore, trunk leaks, cup holder broke, trunk does not stay open, does not want to shift gears at 45,50, & 55mph. Currently has 70,000 miles. Mechanic did not know what was causing the jerking, but told me of several other things wrong. Antifreese dissappating, front brake discs warped. I just had the back brakes completely rebuilt at $250.00. What else . . . air conditioner not very cool, knocking noise coming from engine, does not like to start, battery cables corroding and the list could go on. DO NOT BUY THIS CAR.

There are some, but not worth writing about.

Weakness:

ALOT of weaknesses.

Well now I feel this car is a MISTAKE. I continually take it to the Dealership for repairs since I have an ESP Warranty, but nothing has ever been covered and it will be up in about 6 months. So that was a waste of $1000. Thanks FORD. I will never ever buy a Ford again. Today I just found out, at just over 70,000 miles, I need a new IAC motor, new plugs and wires, and for the second time I need the belt repaced and a new belt tensioner. I had the belt replaced within the year, and now I need it replaced again??? It never worked. The car would loose power steering in a moderate to heavy rain. I already had 4 "Sensors" replaced in the past, the price can really add up on these babies, about $350 a pop. I just want possible buyers of these cars to stay away. My next car will be a HONDA!! Even though they are more money initially, they will save me money and headaches in the future.

Transmission!!!

My Mercury Mystake, what a piece of crap. This is absolutely the worst car I've ever owned. I bought it used w/ 27,000 miles on it. It drove great, was comfortable and got OK gas mileage. I was happy. Until last summer. At 78,000, I lost 2nd gear (it's an auto). Paid $1300 to have the transmission repaired. 3 months and 4000 miles later, I lost 1st gear. Luckily, the guy who fixed the trans gave me a warranty. He fixed it for free. When I went to pick it up, it wouldn't start. Discovered a bent valve. $700 for that. 4 months later, I lost ALL gears, including reverse. Took it back, the guy fixed it for free. Said they had followed all of Ford's advice to repair the problem. Last night (this is 3 months and < 3000 miles later), I lost ALL gears again. I left it at Arby's overnight, and I had to make myself call a tow truck this morning. I could've left it there forever. Of course, it's not worth jack, even with the trans fixed. So trading it in is a joke. 94,000 miles and 4 trans failures in the last 16,000 miles

Strength:

Fit and finish, material quality, acceleration, comfort.

Weakness:

OK, it ain't perfect. It has probably more than it's share of recalls (just remember, though... a recall is a form of preventative maintenance that doesn't cost the owner anything. It's better to have a potential problem fixed before it becomes an actual one) It also has a few electrical "gremlins" (glove box light doesn't always come on, driver's power door lock doesn't always work) and it gets worse gas mileage than the window sticker says (20-24 as opposed to 27-30) But all-in-all it's still just about my favorite car I've owned.

Compared to other vehicles this size and in this price range, I feel the Mystique is assembled with better quality materials both in and out. The door panels are soft vinyl with cloth inserts and map pockets with carpet as opposed to those giant slabs of hard plastic you find on other cars like Escorts and Corollas. Also, the dash layout is very attractive and functional with the same attention to detail and quality as the rest. The fit-and-finish outside is just as nice. The moldings and lamps haven't discolored or distorted even now after 7 years in the sun, and the paint still shines. The V6 engine feels like it's turbocharged! The sporty suspension and 4-way disc brakes make it very fun to drive. It's a very attractive car and was designed with both driver comfort and enjoyment in mind.

Strength:

The look was appealing and before my research, I thought it would be the perfect car for my college student daughter.

Weakness:

Appears to be a car that will cost you much more than the purchase price, and certainly not for one who depends on their car be road worthy. Not worth the gamble.

A big THANK YOU to all who have wrote reviews on this one. Dealer offered me this vehicle at $500 below trade-in value (big red flag). Luckily I found this review page and decided not to bite. Perhaps there will be some poetic justice and all potential buyers of this car will read these reviews and the dealer will be stuck with it for a change.
