Strength:

5 speed manual transmission, 2.0L 11o horsepower motor, and economy to boot! I love it!!!!

Weakness:

No power locks or power windows in my model and no CD player!

I bought my Tracer used with 13,000 miles on it. I haven't had a problem with it other than the ignition locked up when I purchased a new key. I am a former Ford Mechanic, so I know the ins and outs of most of the models. I get awesome gas milage and the car runs great! Ohter than the usual maintenance, I have no problems with my little beast. I just wish they offered more performance mods for it. It has 55,000 miles on it now, and I plan on putting another 50,000 on it before I get rid of it. I think it is very important for those of you who don't know a thing about these cars to learn how to take care of them. So many drivers, not enough intellegence to keep their cars in the proper running condition.

nice looking. Automatic everything.low kms

i hate this car. It has idled funny since we got it. I kept telling my husband something is wrong, but couldn't find anything. Now the transmission slips, rattles all over, not getting gasoline to the engine, shallow gas tank, have had it in and out of the shop nonstop. still acts the same. One thing after another.

Piece of crap mechanically and too small

I regret the day I laid eyes on this car. It took 5 years to pay it off and then the radiator went, then the alternator, now the tie rods and TRANSMISSION. Car is a piece of crap-I only have 55,000 miles on it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Strength:

It gets insanely great gas mileage: ~30-MPG City, ~38-MPG HWY. Very reliable in the dead of midwest winters, started instantly in 0-degree weather. Heat system gets nice and cozy in 10 minutes, AC still works and gets cold in 3 minutes. And for a 1.9L(which btw is whats actually in the car not a 2.0 like the main description says on top) it pulls the car really nicely, i was suprised by it's acceleration, though it's no V8 or "Fast and the Furious" engine :).

Weakness:

This one's a lightweight. THe slightest blow of wind wiggles the car intensly. Also, turning handling is cruddy cus of the weight( lack thereof). FOUR struts, mucho denero, not good if they snap... And even though it much of a weakness, teh '93's didn't have lights behind the Mercury Logo-grill, it'd look much more cool if it lit up.

I got this car, which is the wagon, from a friend, who is one of you're average mothers. Such as yelling at the kids in the back then slamming into a corner or something similar. So the tie-rod ends and all four struts were totally shot. There at least was only 84000 miles on it when i bought it a 6 months ago.

space, ac, reliable, comfy, gas milage OK

Weakness:

acceleration, color (bright electric blue)

I bought this car in 1999 and have driven it from one side of the country to the other a few times. Very reliable! I own the staton wagon and moving and hauling stuff has been a lot nicer than having a sedan/coupe. When I left to go to basic training and then to continue with my tech school in the air force, my car sat for around 8 months. When I came back and cranked it up, there was only one problem and that was with the radiator. It had developed some rust, so I just changed it out and proceded to drive about 800 miles. Driving that far after sitting for so long made me feel very lucky. All in all it has been a great car. I'm a new mother and it is really good for getting you kid in and out of the backseat.

Strength:

Good little engine. 2.6L 4 banger that surprisingly is pretty spunky. 23-28MPG consistantly depending on how hard I drive it.

Weakness:

Not very roomy for my two kids in the back but what can you expect for a nearly 12 year old econobox? :)

I am simply posting this review to show that a cheap car can last if maintained. My wife and I and purchased this car new in 1990 after the local Toyota dealer refused to come down from his $15,000 price. When asked why, he replied "We''re Toyota, we don''t have to negotiate". That ticked me off enough that I started looking at Domestics. We went to the local Ford dealership and like the little Tempo and found it to be roomy enough for my wife to use as a daily driver. They wanted $12,500 and I offered $10,000 which they accepted. Then, since this was our first new car they gave us $500 back which bought the price down to $9500. Since my wife was just finishing a degree they knocked another $500 off. Since then, I have gone through several cars but the Tempo has always been with us. I have changed its oil every 3000 miles and have worked hard to keep it clean and it has paid off by always running and getting me to where I need to go. It recently needed some front end work to replace the CV Joints and I had the transmission flushed. That is the only work it has needed since new so I forgive it. Oh yes, typical Ford Air Conditioner malady - The AC rings have been replaced twice since new. Seems to happen to every FORD in the family.

Strength:

It''s a great short distance car or first car for a student. The gas mileage is good but it''s got a small tank. It''s good for city driving because it''s small and can fit in tight spaces. The rear seats fold down for extra cargo space. The 1994 models came in funky almost day-glow colors. You''ll never "lose" this car in a crowded parking lot.

Weakness:

The stalling issue. I had this car for three years and it would stall on idle intermittently. After getting the clutch and timing belt replaced, it stopped for about 6 months then started up again. Sould be fuel injectors or who knows. Also, there''s a lot of road noise, little creaks that may be due to age and wear. And it''s very light weight. Feels kind of flimsy at times.

The Tracer was my first real car purchase. I bought it used and it was what I could get at the time. I don''t think the previous owner took good care of it. It was 4 years old and had 19,000 miles on it. It stalled on idle, and the speedometer only worked intermittently.

Similar Products Used:

85 Ford Tempo, 88 Mercury Topaz both those cars were used as well and had similar problems to the Tracer. I''d say, if you buy one of these products used, get the most recent year possible, I don''t t

I really can''t think of any.

Weakness:

A couple months after i bought my tracer two of the four tires wet bad and they needed to be replaced. They said that one tire had a slow leak and wasn''t fixable and the other tire had a piece of metal stuck in it for a while. Then in Dec. of 2000 my car started to shake when it idles. It still shakes to this day, but it shakes a lot more. They say that all of the Escorts and Tracer will eventually end up shaking. Then over the summer of 2001 I needed to get my fuel injector cleaned. Now my car (in between the miles of 30-60 mph) jolts every once in a while, but only in overdrive and not in drive. No one can figure out what is wrong with my car. I have had a full engine inspection and a full transmission inspection and still no one seems to know what is wrong with my car. HELP PLEASE!!!!

When I first got the car in Feb. of 2000 it had 19,000 miles on it. That was a little much, but I needed a car then. It ran okay for about the first whole year. Around the summer time of 2001 I started to have some problems. I put about 30k miles on my car in a year in a half.

Good color, Body has helds up rather well .

Weakness:

Not alot of power, Transmission very sluggush, Does not shift real fast.

I bought this car in 97 It had only 16,000 miles. I thought it was the best car very reliable never had a problem . Then the car hit 72,000 And the engine went. They told me that it was a faulty valve cover and that Ford/Mercury are aware of this problem but are not recalling the vehicles. What happens is pieces of the valve cover are breakung of into the engine and causeing the moters to blow.
