Strength:

Ultra-smooth V6 can easily run with the current stuff being churned out by Honda and Toyota. Superior quality and very reliable.

Weakness:

Ugly 15" wheels

I just bought the '94 GXE with 80K miles and in excellent condition for $8,500.

To anyone who wants to get a nice 4-door family sedan but cannot afford a new car - consider getting a Maxima. The VG30E engine in this car (after 1994, it because the VQ30DE - another fine engine) is built very well and still packs a punch by today's standards. Watch out for the 92-94 SE Maximas though - they're prone to some expensive work (namely the VTC and fuel injectors).

I'm still in college and wanted to get a car that I knew would last a long time while giving me few worries. To top it off, the Maxima does indeed provide a level of sprited performance not readily available in an Accord or Camry. The Maxima is generally MORE reliable than the other two forementioned cars, in my opinion is more well made and smooth.

In my opinion, this car was a very good example of what Nissan Motor Company is - making excellent cars for the average consumer. You can't go wrong with a Maxima - new or used.

Strength:

Smooth, responsive engine. Quiet comfortable ride. Excellent highway performance. Braking is excellent and controlled. Excellent egronomic design of switches and controls. This car has a multiple personallity dis-order, it has room and comfort to haul the kids to school and the handling and power to take on the GT ponys at the red light, excellent car.

Weakness:

Poor qaulity paint and interior plastic. I've had to replace several plastic interior parts. I had to wait over a week for the dealer to locate a manual transmisson. OEM tires wear to fast 19K miles, thanks Yokohama.

Excellent lease deal, $212 month with $2500 down for 39 months. Comparable with the more expensive SHO, but lacks the torque of the Ford but the reliability makes up the difference. I plan to buy this car when my lease is up. P.S. I test drove the new 2000, it doesn't perform. No low end torque, cheap looking fake wood trim, ugly rearend.

Strength:

Powerful 3.0 V6 engine, very responsive. Interior is roomy, seats are comfortable.

Weakness:

Put 27K miles on the car in 1 1/2 years and had constant problems. Replaced 3 fuel injectors, drivers side power window motor, oxygen sensor, power antenna, and passenger side body molding (fell off). Cost $1200+. Not to mention this car requires premium gasoline which adds up over time. I question the reliability of this car in the long term. I had the car from 55K to 82K miles. This car may be recommended as a reliable car in Consumer Reports, but I beg to differ.

I unfortunately discovered I was the 5th owner of this vehicle through www.carfax.com. That may have something to do with why I experienced so many problems with the car. The shop which serviced my car said Nissan Maximas are notorious for fuel injector problems, so much in fact he had the part number memorized from ordering it so much. I reported the problem to Nissan Motor Corp. but they were not willing to stand behind their product and admit there are known problems. With Nissan's stock price slipping, I can understand why. I am happy I no longer have to worry about this vehicle and my sympathies go out to the next owner of it.

I've owned many Honda vehicles and feel they have a much better reliability record than Nissan. I bought a Maxima because I thought it was a car I could keep for years without any major problems. I could not afford the expensive repairs for this vehicle so I traded it in for a 2000 Honda Accord LX and love it.

Strength:

The engine, the engine, the engine. The automatic tranny's not bad either.

Weakness:

Power windows.
Power door locks.
Air conditioner.
Paint.
Radio.
Brakes.

This was my first upscale sedan. In the beginning it was great, but lately a lot of little things have begun to fail. I realize the car is 8 years old, but some of this started from day one.

First, the air conditioner never worked right. Not enough cold air in the summer. Works fine in the winter, though. Second, the paint on the hood is soft and susceptible to scratches. I mean, my hood looks like the surface of the moon. And the brakes? I can't go 30,000 miles without going through the brakes.

Now all the little things have begun to fail. First it was the power windows. One by one they went out. All of them. Too many plastic parts, not enough metal. Apparently Nissan figured this out too because the replacement parts came with metal in the critical areas. Next the Bose radio went nuts. According to the parts department, the head unit will cost thousands to replace. And if I put in an aftermarket unit, it's recommended I replace the speakers. Compatiblity issues I'm told. Then, last week, the door locks started to act up. Initially three doors would unlock, but not the driver's. Now the driver's door won't lock at all.

Don't get me wrong, I love this car. I wouldn't still have it if I didn't. But it's beginning to take on the flavor of an old MG. You know, forcing you to drive with one hand while bolting things back on with the other.

Strength:

Engine power and its smooth delivery. Right size for driving yourself or your companies. I like the seats! Firm and supportive.

Weakness:

Exaggerated steering assistance! Got to watch out when doing tight cornering. Turning radius is too big! My 93 Lincoln Town Car turns more switfly than the Max! Service Engine soon light came on. the dealer didn't fix it the first time, still waiting on parts. Stick shift is long and slow. Could have been more precise and shorter.

Bought it online at carOrder.com. All options except the auto transmission for $28410.41 out the door. I would recommend it, if you into the similar type of vehcle: sporty family sedan - very real and yet you can have fun with it when you feel like it. Used to have a 95 Acura Integra GS-R with stick shift. (stolen in 97). I wouldn't say it's fast compare to the Max SE. I think VTEC on that GS-R is overrated. The MAX is much more roomier and quieter and stable.

I also strongly recommend CarOrder.com, wonderful experience. Will use it again for my next car (if it still is around by then)

Similar Products Used:

Volve S70, Camry V6, Accord V6, Bonneville, MAX GXE. The MAX SE is much more stable and well composed in quick maueve. The V6 is very responsive and handles accelaration much more gracefully. Great over all driver visibility. It makes feel like in a fast and responsive Town Car!!! (except the turning radius! Thought the Japanese with their tight narrow streets could have done better in this department, Camery has the same problem, even Mitsubishi Eclipse!) Volve is solid but slow. The turbo is not for me. I think it sucks. Besides, I think it's over priced. Accord/Camery is cheaper but definitely slower and less stable if you push it.

Passing Power. Comfort. Equipment list is extensive. Traction Control System works well.

Weakness:

The speakers in the A-pillars buzz when you listen to classical music (this was true in the 5 Y2K Maximas that I tested). Needs a better transmission, a 5-speed automatic would be nice. The 60/40 rear seats are not very useful, as the opening is not very large.

Overall I think the 2000 Maxima is an excellent value. The car runs very well, handles well for it's size. Engine is nice also. Towards the lower end of the power band the engine needs more torque. The price I paid for my GLE was $26,000 w/6 CD changer.

Great Power...
Great Quality...
See Below : ((

Weakness:

Lack of heated side mirrors, center-console armrest is weak, poorly painted aluminum wheels, sloppy A/T between 1st & 2nd. Things starting to rattle...

Well I'm glad many people have enjoyed their maxima but I have some reservations. Not to vent off too much anger I'll make mine short. The engine seems to be very noisy when put under pressure, the ride doesn't seem that comfortable (compared to my old bmw)and I can hear the ground travel very clear which isn't something I wanted. Besides that the power is great but you aren't getting luxury. Besides everything looking like plastic inside I got the car for the power, but I should have found this site first before I made my decision....
