Strength:

*Price is somewhat decent considering its class and options available.
*Performance is decent, but I STRONGLY suggest after-market augmentation!
*Gas Mileage good
*Solid engine
*Roomy interior and great trunk space.
*17" wheels on SE a definite plus.
*the Titanium gauges WILL eventually grow on you.

Weakness:

*See above summary
*Turning radius is insufficient
*Shifter throw too long (corrected that real quick!)
*Weird arm rest extension is weak and can easily pop up accidently.
*Map lights are weak
*Appearance is not very remarkable except rear (you like it or you hate it.)
*W/ comfort package you must buy the Bose sound system. For the extra $899 list price you could use that $ for much better system!
*Couldn't they have given the same look to the manual shifter as the automatic? The plate for shifting that is.
*Push-forward brights on turn indicator wand can cause you to accidentaly High beam someone.
*Lack of IRS!

My previous vehicle was a '97 Honda Accord EX ,4cyl manual. I enjoyed it thoroughly as I tricked it out to the max, short of a supercharger. If only I had run into the Maxima sooner at that time I think I would've had a better vehicle dollar 4 dollar. When I went looking for a new vehicle I wanted to stick w/ a sedan but something that would satisfy my desires for performance and dependability. After viewing the new lines of Accords, Camrys (and at the higher end BMWs) I arrived at the Maxima '99+ line. Everything else w/in the 24k-30k seemed vanilla in comparison, except the BMW 3 series which at the time had less HP and torque. BMW 3 although smoked the others in the handling and driver response departments. The issue of overall cubic feet for this vehicle was something that I couldn't overlook. I am 30 yr old, 5'11" 230 lbs male. Comfort and fit for myself and other passengers were a priority. The 2000 SE Maxima was the only car in its class that was available w/ a manual. Those who want performance want to be able to shift for themselves, regardless of what an automatic (s)t(r)iptronic transmission can provide. I live near Half Moon Bay which is an area that contains many roads that will truly test you and your car's ability to handle hair-raising curves and steep grades. The SE handled these roads adequately but lacking the IRS, (how can it truly be a "sports sedan" w/out it?) I found that the rear end of the car often became irritated w/ my demands and would try to come around to voice its concerns. I bought the car fully loaded w/ everything that was on the menu including wall-to-wall wood package, hence the steep price. To correct the defficiencies in some of the performance, appearance and handling areas I bought some after-market items from Stillen, a company that is dedicated to providing great stuff for augmenting Nissan vehicles. Feel free to email me about what modifications I have made to this cart.

Strength:

IT HAS AN INCREDIBLY DYNAMIC PICK-UP;THE ENGINE IS VIRTUALLY SILENT (THERE'S BEEN TIMES I TRIED TO START THE CAR WHILE IT WAS RUNNING!);IT LOOKS VERY CLASSY AND IS DEFINITELY AHEAD OF IT'S TIME, APPEARANCE WISE;THE INTERIOR IS VERY CLASSY-LOOKING AS WELL;AS LONG AS YOU MAITAIN THIS VEHICLE CORRECTLY, YOU'LL NEVER HAVE TROUBLE(S) WITH IT;THE STEREO SYSTEM IS ELITE (I HAVEN'T HEARD A STOCK SYSTEM THAT HAS COMPARED, YET).

Weakness:

GLOVE COMPARTMENT IS THE SIZE OF A BIRD'S NEST;WINDOW'S SHUT SLOWLY.

TRADE YOUR CAR IN FOR A MAXIMA RIGHT AWAY.YOU WON'T BE SORRY.

Strength:

Fast and powerful.

Weakness:

Transmission is not too smooth.

I liked this car since I teast drove it. Its engine is powerful, yet it is made also for a family. Most family vechicles are slow and look clumsy. This car could fit all 5 members of my family in without any miscomfort but could still go at a good speed in NY.

Strength:

Performance, interior room, the comfortable but great ride/handling, styling looks like a family car but has some really good zip. Great sleeper. Lots of room to for 5 18-20 y/o teen guys its great! Gold paint really good looks really nice!!

Weakness:

Has some scratches and a little rust on the drivers door from previous owner(maybe thats why so cheap?), no fold down rear seat at all. (a 1990 plymouth acclaim has a 60/40 split fold down rear seat for god sakes!)
Power attenna was dead when I bought the car but probably was never lubed at all by pervious owner...) nothing really important just little gripes.

I had an 89 Cheverolet Celebrity Eurosport with a 3.1 V6 (2.8 died replaced with 3.1) and I loved that car. Brother drove it into a 5 foot deep flooded street at 50 kmh and the engine was suddenly miximg gas and water instead of gas and air. Was written off went out and got a great deal on this car! They are all selling in my area for between $8,000 and $10,000 canadian and I managed to buy this one for $6,000 with only 136,000km!!! Has power heated mirrors, lumbar power seats, auto climate control and that really cool electronic switch to change the auto trans from power or comfort! (cant belive no one mentioned that at all) it drives great! No problems whatsoever at all! Can take almost anybody off the line even some mustangs!!

This car is absolutley (?) great! Everyone and his brother should have a maxima! Only had this car for about 8 months and already gonna trade up to a 1996 maxima se auto (gold paint of course) Probably never gonna drive any other than this!!

Celebrity had some zip but no comparrison to the maxima! The gold paint on the maxima makes it look really nice and expensive. The acclaim had no power whatsoever. (Floor it and 15 seconds later your going like 50 km!!! good paint on that one though)

Strength:

Reliability, value, powerful engine

Weakness:

Given that no car is perfect and I have to write a few things: weak A/C, driver seat odd position

After 2 month and 4,000 Km I can tell you the following:
* The gas mileage was terrible during the first 2,000 km while it was breaking-in. I only got 16 mpg. Now with the weather getting warmer, I am running it on the highway more. The mileage improved to the 22-mpg range (about the same as my old Chrysler Concord with a 3.5 engine). I think it should do better than 22-mpg.
* The engine is powerful and the transmission is smooth (smoother than our 2000 Camry V6). I mix premium gas with mid-grade fuel from time to time.
* I remember reading other owners complain about the wide turning radius. The 35 ft turning circle is actually smaller than Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.
* The ride is smooth and quiet. Road holding is great. This car hasn’t seen any snow as yet so I wouldn’t know its performance in the snow and how well the traction control and ABS work.
* The automatic temperature control works but not as smooth and A/C not as strong as the Chrysler Concord. The fan is on high/med most of the time.
* The seats are good but not exceptionally comfortable. I haven’t tried them out on long trips for 5+ hours driving. The back seats have plenty of legroom. Trunk space is very good and will fit three sets of golf clubs without folding down back seat.
* The radio does not sound powerful despite the 120-watt rating. I like the radio controls in the steering wheel. Workmanship inside is above average (a touch better than Camry and ACURA TL). The self-dimming rear view mirror works great.
* Value – I paid CA$31,000 plus taxes with 2.8% financing plus a great trade-in for my old car. I couldn’t find this level of value from other manufacturers.
* Nissan reliability is above average so I think the Maxima will give me worry free driving for years to come.

I like this car and would recommend Maxima to anyone!

Strength:

222 HP, V6 engine, a very powerful car to show off in front of your friends, but also very spacious and available for family rides. Easily available for rims and a system.

Weakness:

Too big to go racing and it is an automatic car. Other than that, great vehicle.

The vehicle is one of the best selling cars in the country and has never had a mechanical dor engine problem.

Similar Products Used:

It compares similarly to the Toyoto Camry or Honda Accord. Overall, the Maxima is no comparison.

Strength:

nice ability to leave rubber wherever you feel necessary. moon roof is great. trunk space is nice. the front end is beautiful. luxury and plenty of room on the interior.

Weakness:

paint chips are frequent and noticeable, even after touch up. Cost left me un able to register it, kind of a drag for a week or so. front tires go quick, just the way i drive i guess

This car hauls @$$. I havent driven it very far yet (yet to insure and register it) but from my limited illegal driving, i am loving it. I wanted to get a car with room and luxury on the interior (anything would be an improvement from my Wrangler) and this goes beyond any expectations. The white gauges look incredible at night. I left some nice rubber strips on my driveway, all the way through 2nd gear. I got black, which is impossible to keep clean, but it still looks great. I plan on driving this car trough the rest of my college years and well beyond.

Model Reviewed: Maxima SE

Strength:

Strong acceleration, probably one of the best V-6s I have ever driven. Not as fast as a V-8, but all the torque you need from the bottom to around 5000 rpm. One of the silkyest V-6s I have driven. Good gas mileage for a V-6, smooth transmission, I have never missed a shift. Roomy interior and a large trunk.

Weakness:

Torque steer, but what else would you expect for a 190 hp front wheel drive without traction control. Poor markings on the speedometer dial, unless you are drving at night with the instrument lights on. Unstable handeling while cornering at high speeds. No rev limiter on the SE model. And I have to say it, a small glove box.

It's one of those vehicles that you have to contain yuor self while driving. I have been told that the SEs do not have a speed governer (of course I would not know this myself) and will top out close to 140 mph. Infact I found a picture on the internet of the instrument cluster showing 125 on the speedometer and a blurred median in the background. I personally would never do that in this car. The most unnerving thing about this car I think is the way the back end weight shifts while throwing this car into a corner at high speeds (60+) It seems to start shifting it's weight ok, but suddenly stops like the suspension bottoms out. This unsettles the back end and sends the hair on my neck straight up. Gives you that "OH *@#&" feeling. You definatly want to get a good grip on the steering wheel while hitting first and second hard. If you want traction control, you will have to visit the Infinity dealership. Other than that, I love it and would definatly buy another one if some idiot crashed it out.

It's no mustang or camaro, but it makes a good little hot rod with room for the rest of the family.

Strength:

*Powerfull engine
*comfortable ride
*Very fast
*Very reliable
*Plenty of room
*Lots of modifications available

Weakness:

*Power antenna wont go down
*Floor mats arent the best of quality
*Stock speakers HAD to go!
*Hot/Cold switch gets stuck in the middle - very annoying when it is 100 degrees outside and all you can get is heat!

I have absolutley loved this car! It is a smooth driving car with a lot of power - most imports only have 4 bangers. I love knowing that this car pleases both of my parents and is also quite fast. I could take most midsize sedans anytime, and to a 17 year old that is a good thing. Overall I really am impressed with the value of the car and its reliability, and I would recomend this car to anyone of any age.
