Strength:

Driving comfort

Weakness:

GM, service. Realy bad. There add says 3 year warranty on the car except tires. THAT IS A LIE. I had a problem with disk rotors and they said it was not covered by the waranty. The are not prepared to discuss the matter. All I get is the standard answer 'Not covered' although there advert says it is.

The car is comfortable.
Fuel consumption is exactly as describe in the advert.

Strength:

Handling, Vision all around

Weakness:

Faulty V6 Engine. Exhaust valve springs are bad and had to be replaced in the first 2 weeks of driving. Auto has spent more time in dealers garage than my garage.

Fun car to drive. Big for a compact. Quality good inside. V6 engine needs to be recalled because of faulty exhaust springs that break within the first 500 miles.

Strength:

I have gushed over this car in 2 previous reviews, but since my last comments things have turned very ugly.

Weakness:

It started to stall when you started it warm. The idle was all over the place. Gas mileage sank into the teens. Then it began to stall when started cold - all this and the olds dealer couldn't tell me what was wrong - no codes where coming out and it still kept stalling. In the meantime the fuel gauge kept going all the way down even with a full tank of gas, and so much for the "Bumper to Bumper" warranty!!! The front disks warped after only 35,000kms (21,875 miles)and would need a $400+ brake job to fix. After a month of going backwards and forwards to the olds dealer (many crappy rentals later) they (in desperation) erased the powertrain computer and sent me away....unfortunatley the problems started again after only a week and i have now traded the piece of crap in for a 1998 Buick Regal GS (supercharged) which is a much nicer car with better gas mileage and it starts 1st time everytime....
Oldsmobile is now a dead brand, and apparantley the dealers all died (service anyway) at the same time!!!

Get out while these cars still have a resale value!!!

Strength:

Power is impressive, good ride, comfortable seats, great dashboard, comfy back seat, eye-catching shape, alot of car for the money...

Weakness:

Warp-prone front rotors, weak front bearing assemblies (which lead to part of the rotor problem), leaky door seals, incredibly poor backing by dealers & Olds, resale value next to nothing......

I practically stole this car from the dealer (they lost $1296.00 on the sale) and now I know what is meant by, "you get what you pay for". After 52,000 miles I have had the brakes replaced 5 times, the driver's seat replaced for misalignment, side window replaced for leaking and rust, battery replaced (which led to having to play games with the dealer to get the stereo theft-system reset - wanted to charge me $50 for a code!), and now front wheel bearings needing to be replaced because of wear from the vibration of warped rotors. These bearings are also small and create lateral runout on the rotors which is a big contributor to the warping problem you hear so much about. If you purchase an Alero INSIST that mechanics ALWAYS use a manual torque-wrench to re-install the wheels after rotations or service and load the nuts to 100 lbs as this is critical to the loading of the rotors!!! Fortunately, I haven't experienced any real problems with the drivetrain as yet except for much lower than anticipated gas mileage and rare engine stalls (has happened 3 times in 2 years, always at idle and out of gear).

Strength:

Sleek Design, afforadbility

Weakness:

Shotty brakes, noisey interior and poor gas mileage

THIS CAR SUCKS!!!. In the two years I've had this piece of crap I have had the brakes repaired twice and they are still horrible and I have watched my gas mileage slip considerably which was really problematic during the recent surge in gas prices. The car sucked so bad that if I wasn't seeking a career in politics it would have turned me off of American made cars all together and thats saying a lot when you are born and raised in Detroit.

Strength:

Speed and Accleteration i think are its best because like i said its a pretty quick V-6. Everything is easy to reach and there are alot of after market products for this car.

Weakness:

to me the car sucks up way to much gas so thats weakness but overall thats the only weakness this cars has.

This car is awesome. Grant it its not a Corvette Z06 but the V-6 style has enough horses to hang with any V-6 competitors. I have a GLS Sedan and its the perfect car i think because its sporty yet stylish.

Strength:

Relatively inexpensive. Comfortable. Looks good.

Weakness:

Everything else.

This is the first new car that I have ever had. I have had this car for almost a year now, and I think that the dealership has been able to enjoy it almost as much as I have. The car on average goes into the shop once every other month. The problems that I have encountered with this car are as follows: February 2001-I had to bring my car in for a problem with the emergency brake-the emergency brake would not lock in place. A new brake was ordered. February 2001-when I brought the car back in to the dealer to have the new emergency brake installed, I also had to have the mechanic look into a leak that was on the passenger side door. I was told the leak was fixed. May 2001-I had to take the car to the dealership because there was a loud rattle coming from the dome light. We were told that the rattle was fixed- it wasn't. June 2001, the engine in my car blew up at 8600 miles. The dealership had my car for a total of two weeks, and they could not tell me why the engine blew up, but that I was lucky because the car could have caught on fire! July 2001-The car was brought in for the rattle in the dome light (2nd time), the leak in the passenger door (2nd time), and a new problem that we noticed since the new engine, which was that the coolant light kept coming on. After picking up the car this time, the rattle of course was not fixed and after shutting the car door, the dome light completely fell out of the ceiling. August 2001-car was taken in again for the rattle in the dome light and for another new problem- the windshield wiper pops in and out of socket. A part had to be ordered for the wiper. So it was taken in yet another time. Overall, I have been extremely disappointed with the car, and the service from GM has been horrible. Although I do like the overall appearance of the car, and I do like the car when I am in it (on those rare occasions that it is in my driveway and not at the dealership on the lift) I would not recommend this car to anyone.

'94 Oldsmobile Achieva. I did not buy this car brand new, I bought the car in 1997. This car has over 83000 miles on it, and I have not had anywhere near as many problems as I have had with the Alero. I would expect minor problems at this point from the Achieva, but not from a brand new car. Overall, this has been a good car.
