Strength:

good looking

Weakness:

too many to enumerate here

I bought this car right off the lot five years ago when I graduated high school. My intent was to drive it into the ground and buy a new one after grad school. I was assuming that the GAm was going to last me more than five years. Now I'm not so sure. I have had to repair this car uncountable times. And of course everything happened at 40,001 miles when the warranty was up. Power steering pump, brakes, window, interior trim near the windows, every other reviewer's problems and then some. This car has fallen apart on me. I would not advise someone to purchase this car unless they have the money and time to put into it's many repairs, which I don't. I think I'm just going to buy an import...

V6 engine - and acceleration Transmission Cornering Stock Tires - BF Goodwrich T/A Personality Fuel economy

Weakness:

Exaust - sound becoems tiresome

I bought this midnight blue V6 Grand AM car with 18 months and 38KM I've had it now for 10 months now with 52KM. I was originally looking for a 2 year domestic because of the high depreciation and I came up with this bargain which I'm totally pleased with. The V6 engine is super smooth at both city and highway speeds and the auto transmission is up there with the best of the, a perfect match. The brakes do feel different then any other car I've drive when ther're applied at low speeds. The suspension is just stiff enought for this and I look forward to cornering at high speeds on and off highways .Fuel economy is above average when driven modestly. I love the grey cockpit style interior and exterior body lines of the car, but I guess that's a matter of taste. Fit and finish is also not as good as the foriegn cars. I haven't had problems yet, (just oil changes, 1 tire rotation) but time will tell as I plan to keep this car long term (7 - 10 years) Overall, the price I paid for this practically new car, I could not go wrong, but if my price range was $18,000 - $20,000 , I would probably buy the new Corolla, Civic or Protege.

Other than this I like the car.

Weakness:

Window breakage

I am completely outraged by the fact that my car has two windows and both NOW have broken. And I have to pay for this. This is not do to my negligence, but the manufacturers! I am now in college in Caldwell, better known as the ghetto! And, my car is sitting duck with the window down!!! I am appauled that this has not happened by pure accident but, twice.

Many, many repairs!

I have had this car serviced 10 times since Jan '00. First the blinker handle broke, then I hear an annoying grinding noise from the front tires. Replaced the defective brakes under warranty, then the noise comes back 4 more times. Not the brakes anymore, it is a defect in the GT rims that GM/Pontiac refuses to replace. I was told this is common in all the 2000 & 2001 GT rims. Then the fog lights drain my battery twice! Then the signals won't work. The hazard switch was replaced, which I was told is common in the Grand Am's and Alero's. I am sick and tired of bringing my "new" car in for service! My lease is up in two weeks and my car is going in once again now to fix the heater! I have the option to buy this piece of S@#$, but who would want to? NOT ME! Do not buy any Grand Am's until all the kinks are worked out!

Its a fast car(V6 3400 liter)for the money, it accelrates fast, has a great stereo, looks sporty, nice interior, comfortable, over all its a pretty good car.

Weakness:

lots of repairs!

FIRST OF ALL ONE THING I WILL SAY ABOUT THIS CAR IS YOU HAVE TO GET IT FIXED ALOT. THE FIRST THING I HAD TO DO TO IT IS FIX THE INTERIOR SIDE PANELS BECUASE THEY BUBLED AT THE WINDOWS. ANOTHER THING I HAD TO DO TO IT IS GET A NEW ALTANATOR BECUASE IT WASNT WORKING WHICH COST ME 400 DOLLARS BECUASE IT WASNT COVERED UNDER WARRENTY, BUT THIS WAS AFTER 20,000 MILES.THE WORST THING THAT HAS HAPPENED YET IS THE DARN POWER STEERING WENT OUT AND NOW ITS A pain TO TURN AND I AM GETTING THAT FIXED NOW, I DONT EVEN WANT TO NO HOW MUCH IT IS GOING TO COST.BUT BESIDES THAT THE GRAND AM IS A PRETTY GOOD CAR IT RIDES NICE,HAS A GREAT STEREO, AND LOOKS SPORTY.

Fast, looks great and has a great stereo system.

Weakness:

At about 10,000 miles the car wouldn't start. This happened twice for a total of approximately 3 weeks at the dealer and two towing bills. There ended up being a leak in the window which was leaking water into the main computer. At 36,000 miles the car wouldn't start again, (six days before my wedding). Another tow bill and a few days at the dealer resulted in another $420. This time it was a problem with the passlock security system. Just two weeks later, the car stopped running while I was driving down the road. The breaks have to be replaced every 20,000 miles. I have had to have it aligned and balanced several times. I have had the car for about 20 months and it has 42,000 miles on it.

One word....LEMON! I didn't do any research before buying this car. I expected to have a reliable car after buying a brand new $22,000 car. I couldn't have been more wrong. Trying to obtain some kind of customer service has been a joke! I was told by the dealership, (who had sold it to me 6 months earlier), that it wasn't their problem. I called the customer service hotlines which were a waste of time.

I LIKE THE COLOR AND THE RADIO PLAYED WELL UNTIL IT WENT OUT!

Weakness:

YOU CAN HERE THE WIND IN THE INSIDE OF THE DOOR, OVER 70,000 IT SHAKES UNCONTROLLABLY

FOR THE MOST PART THE CAR DRIVES FINE BUT I'VE ONLY HAD IT FOR A YEAR AND A HALF AND MY RADIO IS ALREADY GOING OUT! I THINK THAT IS RIDICULOUS! MANY THINGS IN THE INSIDE ARE FALLING APART.

Quick, fun car to drive! Looks cool!

Weakness:

GM V6 intake manifold problem Owner can't check auto trans fluid level Interior trim separating from all 4 doors Wind noise from door seals Wish they had used the DOHC 3.4L (had that engine in a 1994 Grand Prix GTP... OMG!)

The 1999 Grand Am was the first year for the "stiffer" redesigned car, and it was MUCH better than the preceeding years. The GT is a quick, fun car... but the car can't overcome the quality problems of its maker. Had expensive repairs to the A/C system ($900) shortly after the warranty expired, and at 47000 miles (age 3-1/2 years) it exhibited the defective intake manifold gasket common to SO many GM V6 engines (leaking coolant, oil in the coolant)... another $700 repair. It might be a good car to put on a two-year lease and turn in... but certainly not something you would want to try to keep for the long haul.

Nice look.

Weakness:

Bad brakes. Manufacturer sucks.

Ok, are you ready? I hear a strange sound from the front end of the car...thinking maybe it's the brakes. Wrong! It's the $200 tires. They have a manufacturer defect that GM refuses to fix. But since the defect was misdiagnosed as "bad brakes" (as commonly done) I'm out of that money, plus I have that annoying noise coming from the front of my car.
