Strength:

The car itself is a very intense ride with great handling, pickup and overall control. I can't seem to find anything that takes away from this cars performance.

Weakness:

With the good comes the bad. The exhaust system leaves a lot to be desired and you will eventually deal with this. Since most if not all Grand Am models give the owner access to a cat-back exhaust system,a simple upgrade to a brand name performance cat-back exhaust system should add many years to the life of your exhaust system. Another problem I have encountered is the windows. I'm not sure what causes this to happen but you'll have to deal with this one too. I'm not to sure about the newer models but early models will most definatly have this problem. And of course the weather stripping.

I paid $1500 for my 91 grand am which I think was a steal for the condition that it's in. You can usually find them pretty cheap while the car is still in good condition. Car lots knock the price down because of common problems in the exhaust and minor mechanical faults, but don't take it for granted. All in all,the car worth every penny, but you MUST take car of it. There are pretty much replacement parts for evey part on the car, with a lot of cash or without a lot of cash.

Strength:

Great overall performance, great gas milage, good handling.

Weakness:

doesn't seem too sturdy of a car, repairs are expensive esp. struts.

Got an OK deal I guess. I do like the car its just that it seems to have some quirks. Some of the pannels in the car do vibrate and there is a weird clicking noise coming from somewhere. Overall, I do feel this is a good car I dont know if its too reliable(or at least my car isn't)though. I guess I would recomend it...the newer ones are probably a little better.

Strength:

Great power, sporty looks, great price, good maneuverability, a lot of useful features.

Weakness:

Poor visibility - very hard to see who is in your blind spot. Car frame and head-rest are on the way. However mirrors are pretty good. I'd also advise to look in the side mirrors instead of the center one when backing up. The back of the car is pretty high. Passengers sometimes complain that back seats are very hard, especially the one in the middle. Interior, compared to the exterior is pretty cheap looking. Especially the radio with a lot of confusing buttons. Also, it takes forever to clear the rear window with the defrost button.

With the price I payed for this car I cannot complain at all. I bought it for $12,500 from Hertz car sales. It had all the standard SE features - power everything, etc. It had 28K on it but I looked at all the maintenance records and this car didn't have any major problems. I also got a 1 year warranty with this car. I think it was a very good deal. However I don't think this car is worth more than $20K.

Very similar in size to both of these cars. It was very easy to get used to it.

Strength:

This car seems to have ample space for 4 people comfortably, seats are
kinda worn now but feel very comfortable on long trips. The engine runs great with a 2.5 liter (tech) factory made. It has a decent sound system with the radio/tape player. Very reliable with no roadside assistance needed.

Weakness:

After 10 years of use by previous owners and myself, it is now showing signs of wear. The usual signs of wear on just about every part except the engine. Seemed to find overheating problems- bearings worn on waterpump. Also the heater core has a plastic piece that splits on all models of the Grand Am. The big improvement they made over the decade is stainless steel exhaust system, in which this car and other models did not have, a big burden during winter seaon in K.C. Replacing the exhaust at least once every year in KC on most vehicles without stainless steel exhaust.

Paid used price of $4600, but used with many miles, very reliable for the first 10 years and thereafter sell it and get a newer one, especially with stainless steel exhaust, you can't go wrong there! Overall a good drive for the money.

Strength:

Good performance, good fuel economy, comfortable on long trips

Weakness:

Quality issues. clunks & skueaks since 5000 miles, have 65,000. Two broken engine mounts, suspension squeeks. Dealer can only temporarily fix. Suspension could be firmer. Motor could use a little more umph for the auto tranny.

$18,500. I couldn't recommend it even though I feel mine was an exception. The car was otherwise well made. It has been a lot of fun to drive. Got the auto tranny in mine. The 150HP motor could use a little more umph for the auto tranny, or the auto tranny could use a taller gear for off the line. This has been a very good second car. Mine is ussed primarily for commutting, secondly for trips. It balances out the fuel bill shared by our gas guzzling Pathfinder (17mpg at best).

Strength:

Plenty of power, fun and comfortable to drive. Very reliable so far (almost 12,000 miles). Controls are easy to reach; the trunk has lots of room.

Weakness:

Too many automatic features that I don't have good manual control for (lights, etc.); it's easy to be lazy and 'let the car do it,' but I'd prefer to have more control for special situations. Cup holders are limited.

I paid $18,500 for a well-equipped, V6 model. I've got a long daily commute and it's been great. The biggest problems have been to get it into the shop on time for regular maintenance and trying to keep to somewhere near the speed limit when I have an open road in front of me. The steering and brakes seemed touchy at first, but I've gotten used to it (this was a big change from my '89 5-speed Escort). All my passengers have complimented the comfort of their ride. This car has been a good balance of economy (average 26 miles per gallon), sportiness and roominess.

I test drove other Pontiacs, as well as Ford Taurus, Accord, Camry ...the Grand Am fit my needs best and it's the only one that I enjoyed driving. I bought a new '80 V6 Firebird and only kept it for a year; this is a much better vehicle.

Strength:

The acceleration is a definite plus on this car. I have pulled away from so many V6 cars (Accord, Camry, Altima, etc.) on the highway and the stoplight. Easily customized (stereo and mechanical) and easy to maintain.

Weakness:

The handling is iffy at best! Taking a sharp corner too fast with factory equipment will roll the car like cookie dough. Traction isn't that great either.

Basically what I did (and recommended to my cousin)was replace the stock tires with Yokohama's. As soon as I could afford it, I picked up the Eibach lowering springs and KYB Shock/Strut kit. This cost about $500 and completely diffused all traction and maneuverability issues. This car is solid, and very fun to drive. No repairs except for a defective wheel bearing (repaired free under warranty!).

Extreme Acceleration

Weakness:

Braking a little soft

I've only had this car a day, but I love it! The acceleration is mindblowing. It utterly blows away a Honda Accord V6. It also outpaces a Honda Civic Si model, even though those two are in different classes. One of the great things about this car is that it has quality inside and out! Unlike the Saturn LS1 who has ok quality on the inside and cheap on the outside. The only thing that the GT1 has over the GT is the sunroof. Sure there are other features like 6 way power driver's seat contro but the GT1 is $2000 more and I don't know if it's worth that much more just for a few x-tra's. It is reported to go 0-60 in 7.7 seconds. WOW! I believe it; I of course have not tried that yet because of the newness of it. This car accelrated faster then the V6 version of the Firebird or the V6 Mustang. Now of course the V8 versions of those cars would blow that away for sure, but it is more powerful than the 80's version of those two pony cars. The safty is excellent as well. I give the car a five out of a possible five stars! This car has it all!

Strength:

The car has good looks, enough power for the average family, good stereo system, good handling, fast enough, and some pretty good features.

Weakness:

It's a little uncomfortable to sit in. The back of the car is too high so when you want to look behind, you can't really see anything. After 2 days of driving, there has been a problem. It's a brand new car and the fuel injector already broke! Man, I say the company should give me a brand new car replacement and maybe even a GT for the poor customer satisfaction.

Well, we paid enough. I think the car should be way less than the sticker price because its just not worth it. I would recommend it for the family and the teen because it has some pretty good performance. I just don't think it should cost so much! Maybe it should be 20,000, not almost 30,000.

Strength:

The way it looks; its acceleration and speed; fairly good on gas; rear seats fold down to make room.

Weakness:

NOISE! The windows seem to either leak air or air noise, because it always sounds like the wind is whistling in the windows, and of course my dealer thought I was imagining things. I'd had the car a year, it was parked on top floor of a parking garage and wouldn't start - it had to be jump started and the starter replaced. The Pontiac Roadside Assistance guy gave me some inane advise to try "starting it again because maybe I used the wrong key and it caused the anti-theft device to kick in!" The volume knob on the radio doesn't work, and the air-conditioning can be iffy at times.

I paid around $16,000 for the car, a 1999 SE with most options, which is what attracted me to it in the first place. I would not recommend it to anyone else, and if I had the choice to do over, I would have gone with the Toyota Camry and just paid more for it.
