Strength:

Motor, brakes, reliable.

Weakness:

Paint, rear seating cramped.

My friend let it sit for a year trying to sell it. It was plum and the hood and roof had paint peeling off. I gave him 500 bucks and had to replace transmission solenoid and a seal ruptured. $1500 later it was good to go. It had 160k miles. It was an excellent car for me to drive to work. Good mileage and had a v6 that would really go. The ac went out and the passenger window stopped working when I sold it to a friend since we bought another vehicle. I hated to part with it at 200k miles. Original trans and motor and no leaks anywhere.I still see it on the road. Oh they were noted for letting rain leak into the floor around the windshield. Ruined the carpet.

Strength:

-The engine loafs around at 1900 at 65, do a hundred and the RPM is at 3000.
-Well built, no funky noises on the inside
-Comfortable seats and lots of space
-Great stock sound system
-Exterior styling. The non-GT models had something funky going on. The GT is the best looking by far.

Weakness:

I wish this car came in a manual for the v6. Only the cheesy 4 bangers came with a manual transmission. It needs a larger gas tank, that way I could do a 600mile trip with one tank!!

A great balance of power, fuel economy, passenger space, and cargo space. This was my first new car, and if I could do it again, I would. I am going to have to say, this model and make is the last well built American car. Mine is a 2001 with about 77k, and its only been in the shop three times. THe first time for the serp.belt still covered under the bumper to bumper at 33k, then for some gas pressure thing after at 37k, then for the hazard button recall. My buddies c230 of the same year has been in the shop 50+ times, for a number of reason. One which was the funniest, was that he couldn't start his engine b/c the keyfob used as a key was running low on battery. What a waste!

Strength:

Easy to tow. CAA gets used to the maximum.

Weakness:

Poorly built, design. NEVER GM AGAIN.

Junk. Have 190K on it and I have done the Brakes 5 times. Both wheel bearings replaced. New trans at 120k, new mass air flow sensor, EGR valve, Tps. New fuel pump, New alternator, New strut mount bearings. New thermostat 2X. New battery. New upper and lower ball joints both sides plus the rack is leaking and the heater core, it downshifts on the highway for no reason. First 3 settings on blower motor don't work. The temp guage button broke off in my hand. The guage doesn't work right anyway. Power seat lasted to just out of the 60K bumper to bumper warranty before dying. Signal timer in dash needs replacing. Knob for power windows spun around in seal. The engine has had piston slap since about 20K when warming up.GM dealer told me "WHAT DID YOU EXPECT, ITS A GM" It has been one thing after another since I have got it. A good friend of mine owns a shop, so I do regular maintenace like clockwork. It has wasted enough of my savings that I am praying to get 6 months out of it before having to dump it.

You name it

I have had nothing but problems from day one. Bad brakes, rotors replaced after just 6 months. Smoke coming from the tail pipes. Loud noise when I get out of the car.(I only weigh 158 pounds). When starting the car, ignition or whatever keeps turning. I could go on and on. Never again will I buy a grand am or any pontiac for that matter.

Strength:

comfortable ride, good steering, fast, sound system isnt bad at all, large trunk, okay on gas, i got a really good deal on this car so all the money i put into it (which was about 1,000) was well worth it.

Weakness:

all listed in the review. but beware of washing the engine because if you get the horn wet it will go off and it wont shut off for a while..

I purchased my car from a private seller about 5 months ago for 3,200 it had 122,000 miles. I really like the styling and the inside, but it has had alot of problems including, brakes, calipers, rotors, wheel bearings on both sides, intake gasket, filler neck seal for the gas tank ( which kept making the service engine soon light come on ), the radio screen lights went on and off all the time, the tail lights kept going out, there was a lose wire for the head light which made it go on a off, the cup holders are in the worst spot, the water pump is crap, the vinyl on the doors bubbles up and flips up, sometimes the horn toots after i get out of it and there isnt an alarm in it, and the chimes in the dash are so loud when u start the car it scares you, and worst of all the side mirrors would break off everytime you go to a car wash, and the seals on the doors leak ( everytime it rains my feet gets wet ) when i first bought the car it was cold and sometimes the heat wouldnt work, and when i would push the gas pedal down it sometimes hesitated then would jump into gear, and i have sratches one the windows from rolling them up and down. all of the problems were nothing major. but for the price i expected it.i have read alot of other reviews and they seem to have the same problems. it has a great engine and trans though! the seats a nice for long driving trips. it seems like everytime i fix one thing another thing breaks. if you plan on buying this car just make sure that you know a good chevy mechanic!! i cant complain though i mean so far nothing major i just keep crossing my fingers! it now has 126,000 miles and it runs like brand new, i would buy it again! i havent drove it in the snow yet but well see how it does.

Strength:

The car is a winner!

Weakness:

No side air bags. Below average resale value.

I've been driving this car for 28 months now and I'm very pleased with it. I only have 11,100 miles on it but I've had ZERO problems with the car. After 1,000 miles I began using Mobil 1 which I believe contributes to the engines smooth performance. My car is summit white with pewter gray leather interior. The car came loaded with every option Pontiac offered on the Grand Am except "On Star". My car is quiet and powerful. Even with the big six I get an honest 23 mpg in the city and 29-31 on the hiway. Love the Monsoon stereo and the power sun roof. I purchased this car on the "smart buy" program so I will either turn it in or pay the baloon payment in march of 2008. At this rate I'll have less than 24,000 miles on it by then. If the car remains the killer car it has been so far I might just keep it. The car stays washed, polished, and garaged in north Texas so the exterior is just as beautiful as the day I bought it.

being a no so GRAND am

The service dept has my car as much as I do. The factory forgot to put three of the four hinges that hold in the engine. The car jerks from 1st to 2nd. The service dept cant figure it out, they have been working on this problem since 2003. The cd player stopped working, but the extened warranty covered it. The driver and passager auto windows have broken. The car makes a horrible noise if you dare turn and brake at the same time. Leaking coolant problem twice. Starter broken. Why would GM build an auto hard top car when they cant even get auto windows to work?! Will never buy a pontiac again!! I had a friend tell me all the problems to come with a grand am. I just thought they had bad luck! No, just a bad line of car.

Terrible brakes, replaced too many times to count, both wheel bearings replaced, heater resistor replaced, brake caliper replaced and the problem still exists, now a cluncking in the front end most likely tie rods or ball joint
Overall for the repairs which this car has needed I would give it a 4 out of 10. I do put alot of miles on it but they are all highway and by no means am i hard on the brakes. Electonically the car has been good other than a check engine light that was reset and hasn't resurfaced.
Upside, fairly good mileage and a comfortable ride

Great for the first 5000k, then downhill from there!

Weakness:

The list never ends!

Where do I begin! Started with bad brakes/rotors being replaced. Then it continued with fuel gage not working, wind noise from window, CD player skipping, intake manifold seal leak, the tranny slips, daytime running light relay is shot, and I have about three different warning lights telling me my ABS does not work. I have never drove a worse car in my life, and now that its paid off, I'll probably drive it off a cliff, because I'd be scared to sell it to anyone for fear its not safe!

I don't really have anything to complain about with this car. I've only had it two years, and I enjoy it. I drive a lot, and I find it very dependable as I go on a lot of highway trips. Odometer currently sitting at 101,192k.
Car had 30,482 when I bought it, it was only 6 months old.
