Strength:

Gas mileage, handling, looks

Weakness:

The SL-1 has a small engine which is not very spunky on the take-off but adequate, nevertheless. I recommend the SL-2 which has a bigger engine but also has a bigger MSRP.

This Saturn is my wife''s car but I drive it occasionally. We bought it new and have had it for 5 years with very few problems. The alternator quit about 2 years ago (out of warranty) and recently it quit again. The second time it was replaced FREE by the Saturn dealer. My son recently bought a used ''96 Saturn exactly like my wife''s (same color and interior - it''s funny to see them both in the driveway when he comes over to visit) with 140,000 miles on it for $2700. It runs just as well as my wife''s and he loves it.

Strength:

Sporty for a sedan, Great gas mileage, nice paint job, Nice handling on turns.

Weakness:

Water leaks into car when it rains, Pick up stinks, (I think I can, I think I can)NOT UPHILL YOU CAN''T! Problem with heat sensors causing engine block to run hot.

Good commuter car. I put over 200000 miles on this car with little repairs. All cars need preventive maintenance eg; oil change, tune ups.

Good on gas

Weakness:

There are alot of things the sales people don''t tell you! Do alot of research before you buy one of these hunks of junk!

Where do I start!!! I bought it used and got a 60,000 km warrenty with it. After a month and a half I was told I needed an alignment and 4 new tires, then I replaced the same tail light bulb twice in a week.At six months I was told that my brakes were hardened and needed to be replaced and my rotors would have to be machined, all the while my wonderfull car was whinning everytime I stepped on the gas! Of course the whinning was the tensoner pully that I had to pay to replace. Last week I had to have a new water pump and serp. belt put in this piece of crap and now it runs like total garbage. It sounds like its missing when I start it and has no balls at all.

Strength:

Heating and air conditioning operate well. The polymer body panels are added peace of mind. Low price and no repairs so far.

Weakness:

Could have better pick up and the interior generally feels cheap with so much vinyl.

When we were looking for a car we wanted one that would be inexpensive; price, gas mileage, repairs and insurance. We bought the car from a broker after a three year lease return. The car was loaded and in perfect repair. We had also looked at the Protege, Civic and Corolla. They were all far more expensive and usually with less equipment. Thus far the gas mileage has been good and no repairs required in the first six months. Air conditioning and heater are quite strong. Pick up is a little slow but the car handles well. For the price and with these options I would buy the car again.

Test drove Protege, Civic and Corolla. They are all probably better overall vehicles but not for the price.

Strength:

Handling, economy, comfort. The two Saturn dealers I have used have been very good.

Weakness:

Fit and finish could be a bit better, engine has always used a bit more oil than other cars I have had.

Purchased car in Oct. 1995, now has 107,000 miles. First car I have kept this long in both time and mileage. Only major problem was a computer failure at around 48,000 miles. Outside of that, no real problem. Still has original clutch. Very satisfied with the car''s reliability and performance. Engine nicely balanced between power and economy. I have recommended Saturn to others.

costly repairs, and cheap products used on car.

then you wonder why americans by foreign cars because we americans continue to make lemons. then you wonder how deceitful some companies are when they push there products and declare how good they are. we have had nothing but problems with this car that we purchased for our daughter. imagine this, you claim to have the best car on the market yet it is a costly lemon. i will never purchae another saturn again.

I bought my Saturn after much research and have encouraged other to buy a Saturn. However since my Saturn turned over 75,ooo miles I have had one repair after another. The latest led the service manager to say,"We don''t know what is wrong. When the service engine soon light comes on it could by hunddreds of electrical problems." I have been very patient and understanding, but I am now so dissatisfied with Saturn that I am thinking about buying another car from another manufacture. I hoped my Saturn would last until 200,000 miles but now I feel it would be a miracle to last until 100,000. As a single Mom this is so discouraging because I really don''t have the extra money to buy a new car, but I believe my Saturn to be a lemon.

Strength:

Solid drivetrain, NO DINGS!!!, Plastic body holds up very well (many hits & minor accidents), brakes last forever, and still running after 193,000 miles!!!

Weakness:

Oil consumption and a loud drivetrain.

I bought my Saturn new in 1991 when they first came to Maryland. The car has always used at least one quart of oil every 3,000 miles. I have only spent about $700 total in repairs for the 10 years and 193,000 miles I have driven it!! I have only had to make the following repairs: front wheel bearings, alternator, ignition switch, leaking transmission gasket, belt tensioner, headliner and egr valve/solonoid. The cars thirst for oil and only 30 mpg have always bugged me. The lack of rear leg room/trunk room are expected for a car of this size. The oil problem has resulted in EGR, O2 sensor and Catalytic Converter problems. My car does not pass emissions tests anymore due to the converter. The first repair was performed at 96,000 miles. All in all, it has been a very reliable car and still very dependable.
