Strength:

THE BODY LOOKS A LOT BETTER THAN THE NEWER MODELS, CORNERS GREAT WITH MY NEW WIDER TIRES, GREAT ON GAS, THE TRUNK CAN BE LOCKED SO THAT IT CAN BE OPENED ONLY WITH THE KEY. IF U HAVE AN AMP AND SUBS LIKE ME, IT WONT GET STOLEN UNLESS CROWBARRED

Weakness:

IT IS SLOW ON ACCELERATION, BUT WHAT DO U EXPECT FROM A 91 TERCEL WITH 93 HP. NOTHING A COLD AIR INTAKE AND EXHAUST WONT FIX. OH, AND THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT DOESNT HAVE A LOCK.

THIS CAR WAS USED, WITH ABOUT 12,000 MILES ON IT. 10 YEARS LATER ITS STILL KICKIN' WITH ONLY 95,500 MILES. IT WAS OUT OF COMISSION FOR 2 YEARS WITH A CRACKED HEAD. ORIGINALLY IT WAS MY SISTERS CAR FOR 5 YEARS. SHE GOT A NEW CAR, AND I HAD A CHOICE BETWEEN THE TERCEL OR A 90 COROLLA 2 DR COUPE. SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THE COUPE, BUT I DIDNT KNOW HOW TO DRIVE STACK AT THE TIME. SO I TOOK THE TERCEL. IT HAS BEEN MY BABY SINCE 1998. TOOK OFF THE EMBLEMS AND DECALS, PUT IN HYPER WHITES, CLEARED OUT THE CORNER LIGHTS AND PUT HYPER WHITES IN THOSE AS WELL. TINTED WINDOWS, NEW STEREO WITH 2 10 IN. MTX SUBS. I GET GREAT GAS MILAGE. IT TAKES ABOUT 12 DOLLARS TOTAL TO FILL THE TANK UP, AND IT WILL GO A WEEK AND MORE.

Strength:

Reliable; Good sized trunk for such a small car; Pretty good gas mileage; Automatic shifts smoothly; Easy to park; When you get RPMs up, it actually accelerates ok

Weakness:

Red paint has oxidized to death; Small rear seat; Auto only 3 speed!; Now burns oil at 95K

Overall this is a very good, reliable car. I paid a little too much for it ($4500) in May 2000 with 79K miles, but I needed a car after my hand-me-down Taurus died, and its been good to me while I've had it. The speakers were blown, but luckily I worked for a big chain electronics store that sold car speakers, so I was able to upgrade for a good price.

This is not meant to be powerful car, but the automatic desperately needs a 4th gear. The 3 speed really stunts acceleration and makes it buzz pretty loud on the highway. Plus it prevents the gas mileage from being as good. The burning oil is kind of alarming too, since the car only had 90K when it started doing it. The car is pretty fun to drive on flat, windy roads though. I can also vouch that it somehow does well in the snow. But I like something with a little more pep and I can now afford something nicer, so I'm getting a used late-model Integra.

Still, the Tercel is a great car, especially for kids or those who need a reliable point A to point B car. But if you have the choice, opt for the manual transmission.

'92 Mercury Tracer (aka Ford Escort) - accelerates better than Tercel, but has had more problems.
'90 Ford Taurus - more powerful car (obviously w/V6), but man, what a piece of junk!
