Volkswagen GTI (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

2010 saw the introduction of the sixth generation GTI that delivered a slick combination of sports car-like precision and tuned driving excitement in a multi-purpose hatchback design.

Power mill of the VW GTI is a 2.0L 16-valve DOHC turbocharged and intercooled 4-cylinder engine with FSI direct fuel injection that produces 200 HP at 5,700 rpm and 207 lbs.-ft. of torque from 1,800 all the way to 5,000 rpm. With the standard 6-speed manual transmission, the GTI reaches 0-60 in 6.8 seconds. EPA estimates rate fuel economy at 31 mpg on the highway and 21 mpg for city driving.

The GTI is available with an optional automatic Direct-Shift Gearbox® transmission which gets it to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds from a standstill. The 2010 GTI’s fuel economy is improved when equipped with the DSG transmission, which ranks an EPA-estimated 33 mpg in highway driving, and 24 mpg in city driving.

Strength:

Color, powerful motor, handles like she's on rails. Gets lots-o-looks from the ladies. Love the sunroof alloy rims, driving lights and golf ball shifter.

Weakness:

Since I bought her I haven't much to complain about. The low beam lights burnt out & the muffler came off a week in. Unlike most reviews I've seen though Hillcrest has given me great service and are currantly replacing all problem part. Thanks again Hillcrest and VW

Two Dr, electric blue, sunroof, I am in heaven. I just put down the 1994 GEO Metro. Had that car since new and hated it since I bought it. The VW on the other hand has reaffirmed my love for the open road, and let face it Nova Scotia has some great scenic roads to burn up. There are all kind of great features on this car. Love the looks and stable handling. She has the 2.0 four cylinder in it and believe me going from a three cylinder 1.0 liter it's a dream. I would like to thank VW and my friend at the dealership, Mike Gilly for showing me this new love of my life.

Strength:

It still flies on the open road

Weakness:

Lots of problems, the biggest being the windows; engine bogs down when air is on; realiable on this thing is a BIG problem

I started out loving this car, but now I'm not so sure. I had the dirver's side window brackets replaced four times, the passenger's side twice, some pieces for the turbo, and now taking it in for some recall items. I mean, they were covered by warranty, but I'm also getting to know the dealership very well.

Strength:

-Passing Power -Handing -FitNfinish -Blue gagues -Gas milage -Heated seats -Roomyness -Bang 4 buck -Fun Factor

Weakness:

-No option for the trip computer that the VR6 has -Stereo needs more baaase -Cruise controls/ stereo volume should ov been placed on the steering wheel but.. O' well 98 out of 100 aint badd

I test drove the 03 VR6 back to back with the 1.8T and i didnt know which one to buy. I had to think about it for about 2 weeks but in the end I choose the 1.8T cause of... Gas milage, Tuneability, Lighter I never would'ov believed that driving a cage could be ALMOST as fun as tearing up the roads on my Suzuki GSXR750 bike. I love this car. It does eveything well, handling, power, gas milage, comfort etc.etc. I bought the 03 SilverStone 1.8T with black leather, 17" wheels and the heated seats. I almost bought the 03 20th ed but decided to go with the silverstone + the 20th didnt have heated seats. I cant put into words how much this car rocks. It feels like a 6cyl, power comes on from as low as 2000rpm and to overtake cars on the highway or street is a joke. So far I had no problems with the car. This car brings a smile to my face everytime I drive it. The look on pep's faces when they try to catch me after the light turns green is worth every last cent that I dropped for this car. The fit n finish is bar none the best in this catagory. This car is the original rocket and puts cars that cost 1000's more to shame if opened-up. I cant believe you could trash sooo much more costly cars and spend only $26,000 Can. Lets just say that if you LOVE driving, cornering, speed, handling or weaving in and out of traffic this is the car for you. It cuts. Did I mention the chicks love it?

Strength:

Great handling, friends love it, girlfriend doesnt like driving anything else (fun to drive even for her)

Weakness:

some small flaws, window supports broke on a camping trip, cost 15$ for new ones and i replaced them myself, no biggie. On a binpy road I hit the oil pan and it cracked, i replaced it, had to buy the tools + the new oil pan... this means that the car is pretty low so be carefull.

Bought this car a year ago with 118,000 miles on it... someone must have loved to drive it... so far minor problems, besides the ones that are scheduled. Recently replaced the ignition coil (cost 150$, my installation) but the car now has 141K miles. The coil lived its life. The car drives great, I simply love it... Its the small things that make a car great such as everything from the position of the pedals to throtle response. This is a 2.0 with 115hp, its the smallest of the group and since im used to my older 230hp turbo 2.0 im still not compalining. The entire package make up for the smaller engine. Having a simpler engine alows me to fix it with ease and pleasure. This car is built with the mechanic in mind, if something should fail(and it rarely does compared to gm, volvo or lancia I speak from exprience) , this car is easy to fix. The engine is extremely dependable... at 141K miles the compression is 100%, 98%, 100%, 99% for the 4 cylinders. Try that with a mazda or a ford... dont think so. Germans know how to build cars... and they build good ones!

I play drums so I can fit all my drum kit and even extra stuff....Awesome space...speed...handling...turbo is awesome...no to hard on gas...Looks like a little teleguided car with the cool antenna on the top...

Weakness:

My car did not start at minus 30C so the trick is to hold the key like for 2-3 seconds on the contact and it will start.... I called a taxi....Maybe the electronics were frozen... The cup thing also I can`t see my sound system... Got my first speeding ticket...300$

I had a Volks Golf 1999 lease untill it ended in 2003.When I went back to bring the car in,the lady at the VW dealer let me try a 2003 GTI.The car was almost out of gas and we went for a ride.No Joke,I was up to 150Km/h(near 90Mp/h)on the highway and this baby still had lots to give me (: She even showed me the "anti slipping" unit that`s controlled by computer to make sure the 2 front wheels have the same amount of rotation or the unit will compensate to slow 1 wheel down via the braking system. You can shut it off if you want with the push of 1 botton on the dash... We went back and bought one as for 224$/2 weeks for 7 years.Lotsa money since up here in Quebec Canada we pay a darn 15% tax + the 7,2% interrent on the load for the car. It`s all good so far.I got the 17" Rims that I think came from the first generation 2003 GTI and I tought they looked cooler that the ones from the 2nd Generation ones(Montreal wheels).Mine have like allen key set screws in them. They are awesome.I always look back at my car when I leave it in contempt. My 2003 GTI is Brazilian Made and my 1999 Golf I had was German made. The "direct sterring" I get with my 2003 Gti is awesome.Turn the steering a bit and the car moves unlike all the cars U see.

Strength:

It is sporty and good looking.

Weakness:

The reliability and poor customer service at both the dealership and from VW completely negate any positive qualities.

Power window gears on both sides broke and required replacement of the whole window assembly. Driver side leather door trim came "unglued" and the whole interior door panel had to be replaced. The emissions system has generated 3 check engine lights and has cost $1000 to repair over three separate trips to the dealership. The center console and passenger seat rub together and make a constant noise. The dealership has done a very poor job of troubleshooting the emissions problems and needlessly replace two oxygen sensors before finally locating the problem. VW has only offered to cover $400 of the $1000 cost of repairs as a sign of "good faith" despite the fact that our precision engineered vehicle is falling apart.

Strength:

Car looks great; seats are comfortable

Weakness:

Completely unreliable; horrible customer service

Before purchasing a Volkswager, please read this review. I have a 2000 VW GTI automatic and it has been a nightmare. On top of the constant mechanical problems, VW's customer service is worse than non-existent - it's insulting and flippant. I have owned a VW Fox (still have it) and a Scirocco; both are great cars. But when VW moved their facilities to South America, it's clear they were more interested in cost than quality. I have had the following problems - transmission replaced at 8000 miles (after failing various times, it finally wouldn't work at all); rear hatch leaked horribly, causing lighting harness to short out (no turn signals or rear lights); check engine light comes on constantly since 3000 miles (VW says it doesn't mean anything); car will start rough, shake violently and simply cut off (typically won't start again until a day passes); car has very rough idle (all passengers comment on it); car pulls to the left (VW paid for new tires but problem still occurs), and so on. In short, the car is a lemon. A big one. The main reason I bought my first new car was reliability. I was out on my own, living in the city, etc and couldn't rely on my dad for repairs or the family garage for maintenance. Also, my new commute was long and I wanted a comfortable ride. I thought a new car was worth the expense. I'd have reliability which I could count on for at least three or four years. And given my earlier luck with VWs, I bought the GTI. Never again. I could accept that I'd bought a lemon if VW had honored the warranty and simply said, 'Hey, we're sorry for the problems and we'll fix them.' Instead, I was ignored or avoided. Once I took off work to meet a special VW 'representative' and he never bothered to show up for the appt. Great use of a vacation day! The dealership didn't want to be bothered. Once they have your money, where's the incentive to help you? I don't know if every company is as bad as VW, or every new VW is as unreliable as the GTI, but be warned. VW's reputation is greatly exaggerated. Buy a Toyota (I now have a '03 Matrix XRS and it's a dream.)
