This car has been nothing but a disappointment. I've had to take it (or tow it) to the dealer for warranty service *six times* since I bought it a year and a half ago. The problems vary: broken window brackets (twice), malfunctioning door locks, various electrical problems. The most recent problem is a short circuit in the radio. First the radio stopped working, and within a day or two the battery was drained and the car was dead. After having this problem fixed last November, the very same thing happened again this past week. Now I'm without a car once again. On average, I've had to take the Jetta in for repairs once every 3 months since December 2001. This is merely an inconvenience as long as it's covered by the warranty, but I hate to think what it will cost me when the warranty expires. I've learned my lesson: no more VWs for me. |

Strength:
1.Great European Looks 2.Fine Engine 3.Fine Transmission 4.good gas mileage 5.Safe w/ front & side airbags 6.Build quality 7.convienent standard features 8.Handling 9.BRAKES-4 wheel discs
Weakness:
1.That darn check engine light seems to find everyone that owns a jetta. This is not enough reason to condemn this car though. 2.This cars strengths vastly outweigh any weakness. I love my Jetta. I find it to be a very well put together and designed car in the finest german fashion. There seems to be no doubt that the style is great. This car does carry status with it and expectations of long life. I must say that in 16000 miles of driving I have had no major complaints. The cupholder sucks, okay so what. The 5-speed shifts perfect and it's pretty quick to. The brakes are amazing with handling to match. The ride is to soft but, in spirited driving the car has never felt anything, but stable. The Jetta is also the safest feeling car I have put my pregnant wife and four year old daughter in. Piece of mind. The keyless entry, trunk release and six disc changer have been infinitely convenient. My gas mileage has been around 28mpg overall, very acceptable to me. Now to the problems, I admit that the check engine light is annoying. But the problem was easily taken care of by my dealer, free of charge. They just reset it, and its been off since. My headlights both blew within two days of each other. I bought new headlights at walmart and replaced them my self in less than twenty minutes at a cost of less than $20. All cars have qwerks and some more than others, but my jetta isn't one of them. As for the people who complain about cost, I am sorry that you bought a foreign car and had to pay more for parts like the rest of us. It comes with the territory whether the car is German, Japanese, British, Swedish, etc. If you don't like it buy a Focus and look like everyone else on the road. Exclusivity costs a little more sometimes. My Jetta has been great and is holding its value. They may not be for everyone but I can't say enough good things about my Jetta. No one car is right for everyone, Thankyou. Similar Products Used: VW Golf Porsche 944 Ford Probe BMW 320i |

Jetta TDI
Strength:
good on gas
Weakness:
poorly assembled, no one will ever convince me that manufactured in mexico is good quality. This is my second Jetta in 7 months, I purchased a black TDI Dec 31, 3 weeks latter I noticed the car was shaking everytime I stepped on the brake, then I noticed white spots on the paint. I brought the car in, they told me that the front discs were warped and that the paint was defective. I contacted VW head office, and I insisted they replace the car...they did. I got my new silver Jetta Feb 22, the moment I drove it off the lot the front dash was making all kinds of rattling noises, I took it in and they told me that they have seen this problem, it has to do with the radio bracket...I've been back 4 times and I am currently driving a rented Ford focus for the last 3 weeks because my car is still at the dealer...they have no idea whats wrong with it. The car makes all kinds of sqeeking noises...save your money and stay away from this piece of junk |

Strength:
My previous car was a 2000 VW jetta, the 2003 has more power, and it feels like the gearing between 2nd and 3rd gear has been smoothed out.
Weakness:
The 2003 Jetta does not have a quality feel to it. As a previous VW owner i am not impressed with the workmanship of the new jetta. i wish i would have kept my 2000 Jetta. This car is a nightmare. At 3000 miles i noticed a strange moaning noise in the front end when making left hand turns. The service department at Halterman's Auto Ranch said the tires were blemishes, they replaced them. it didn't fix the problem so at 5500 miles they put new drive axels in the front. that didn't fix the problem so at 6500 miles they put new wheel berrings on the car. still not fixed. next is brakes and i would imagine the fun will continue. |

Transmission Creeks and Cracks Interior Attracts everything I have always wanted a Jetta. Which I am glad I waited to purchase a 2003, because I leaned that the 2000-2002 Jettas give alot of problems. The windows on them drop out, which 2003 have improved. On the old ones the cup holders was in a inconvienient place. and the 2003 have improved on this too. My problems with mine is on the left side when you are taking a turn there is a loud annoying THOD. Now the transmission is acting up it gears out hard and gives you wiplash. The interior in the back seat also creeks when on a bumpy road. Its a nice car but it breaks your heart to know the you pay so much for and expect good performance and it disappoints you. Style, available options, handling, finished very well
Weakness:
Everything that makes it run! Bad for body creeks and general poor construction CRAP! I think that sums up all of my feelings for this car. It creeks and squeeks like a 20 year old pile of junk. Have a loud and annoying "klunk" coming from my front end when going over any bump. Taken it back 6 times!! Alas I am still haunted by this "klunk". Not only are they sub-standard vehicles (I'm sure in large part due to the fact they are manufactured in Mexico), but the service at their dealerships is even worse (especially Cambridge VW). I have complained to the dealer and VW Canada with no real satisfaction. I am currently looking to simply return the vehicle or sell it (having only had it 18 months). I have friends who have since bought Jettas and they also have had numerous problems with them. Defenitely not worth their hefty price tag. DO NOT BUY ONE! Weakness:
Too long to list them all. (See review above.) There's more than I can state, or care to state. I loved my car when I first got it in 1999. It looked great, and drove wonderfully, especially for my long commutes. However, things started falling apart only a few months later. I couldn't open the gas tank cover (switch was broken). The button on my keys that opened the trunk stopped working as well (those buttons were a nice feature!). The cup holder broke off. Strange stuff started oozing out of the front doors and dripping off the sides of my car. Car started making strange noises. Over the next two years, more things went wrong. Tape deck broke, and parts for the thing are super expensive! For instance, an 02 sensor is around $150 or less for most cars (according to a mechanic). However, VW charges $300! And everything in the car is impossible to get to. I can't even change the battery myself, and it took the mechanic a long time to get to it! Overall, the car is CHEAP. My boss bought a VW bug the same year, and is making the same complaints. The car make LOOK nice, but it falls apart VERY quickly. Cheap. I will NEVER buy a VW car again. I know I'm going to lose a ton of money trying to sell the POS. Who's going to want to buy it? :( |
