Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

Strength:

Smooth confident power even at low rpms. 4 cylinder engine performs like a confident 6 and the turbo gives you that extra umph when you need it. Don't regret getting this over the VR6 for the better MPG.

Overall great looks especially with the 17" wheels. Solid handling and feel slightly below BMW 330, which is saying a lot. Good brakes though again not in the same league as BMWs. Although leather interior looks and feels better than BMW and MB compared below.

Weakness:

Auto transmission takes awhile to shift into Reverse. Front wheels get dirty fast. Cramped rear seats but I dont' care since I'm driving! Dread the day I have to pay for new low profile tires but love having them now. Whats the deal with the "cool down time" for the turbo?
For guys; 2nd to the Beetle and Cabrio its a favorite choice for women, but so are most luxury cars and SUVs.

A great choice for single people and couples without children. Jetta 1.8T and GLX gives Audi A4 performance without the high price. A good point to start for those who eventually will move on up to BMW, Audi and Porsche. At a respectable price you're getting a German car (yes, its assembled by our brothers South of the Border but no problems yet compared to the MB above) that performs like one and looks better than a lot of cars that cost more. Test drive one and see for yourself.

'93 BMW 325i - The Standard for compact sports sedans. Every good thing said about them are true!
2000 MB C230 Kompressor - This is a German Car?! Drives like a boring Japanese family sedan. Engine sounds like a diesel but good power once the revs kicks in. Went to the shop 4 times to get fuel gauge replaced.

Model Reviewed: GLX

Strength:

The 2001 GLX that I owned had the best suspension that I have ever experienced in a car. Coming from a BMW M3 that says a lot! Talk about seemless grace and handeling at the same time - this is as good as it gets for the price. The power is more than adequate. I find myself driving in traffic in 4th gear at 35 mph without even lugging the engine. Not that I think that this is a benefit, but it's an attribute to the quiet and smooth demenor of the GLX Jetta. However, rev the VR6 up and you hear the wonderful roar of the well balanced VR6 engine. The car also goes in the snow pretty well.

Weakness:

No back seat. Hydroplanes and turns sideways on highway smashing into cars and a pole.

I have no regrets about the GLX whatsoever. I would reccomend the car to anyone. I am not buying another however because I want a back seat.

Strength:

Fast with great pick up, rounds sharp corners with ease, easy and fun to drive. I use any excuse to take it for a ride. After 10 years of being in the snow and salt, everything is in great shape. The BBS rims are still almost perfect. It starts right away every time, even in frigid temperatures. Despite my "buy American" relatives' warnings, I have had no problems and love this car. It is my first car and I would buy another one like it in a second if something happened to it.

Weakness:

took 2 days to wire for a CD player, cheap plastic speaker covers on doors are always broken. I can't think of anything else.

An all around great car. My GLI has 113,000 miles and still has another 100K to go! I would recommend this car because you get alot of car for your money. These cars have everything going for them. Personally, I prefer them to GTI's because they have more trunk space and look better, and perform equally. My father has had 2 Mk2 Jettas, and now I have one, and all have been great. Volkswagen forever!

Strength:

Fast and easy starting in cold weather-tremendous power for a Diesel-Very smooth at idle-You can't tell it's a Diesel at highway speeds.

Weakness:

Velour interior hard to keep clean-noisey door locks-takes to long to warm up and get heat. Use of a timing belt instead of a chain.

My 2001 VW Jetta TDI is a very impressive car all around. I have absolutely no problems with this car. I love the power of the Diesel engine, the fast start ups, and the great fuel mileage. The dealer is very concerned with your purchase and I like the two years FREE SERVICE and the Ten year powertrain warranty. I would recomend this car to anyone.

Superb stick shift. Fun to drive. Great looks. Loaded standard features.

Weakness:

Base V4 engine lacks sufficient power. Power windows not offered in the base model, which is otherwise very well equipped. Rattling noises from some fixtures.

I have been quite happy with my decision to buy a Jetta. The car looks good and the stick shift is a wonder to operate. The car drives smoothly and handling is excellent. I have a v4 base engine, but would highly recommend the 1.8T or V6 as the V4 seems to struggle for more power when pushed a little. Anything over 75 miles per hour on the V4 is a struggle.

Strength:

I have been driving Volkswagens since 1973 (Bus) and bought my first diesel (1981 Rabbit 5 speed) and we owned several VW diesels since. By far the best is the 2000 TDI which I purchased new. Everythink works well.
1- Great looks
2- Great performance ( only diesel to leave rubber when accelerating)
3- Great leather
4- Love ther heated seats etc.
5- Great milage 48 to 50 locally (in country & 51 on highway @ 70 mph
6- CD changer sounds better than my Bose
7- Love power window "auto stop" feature
8- Trunk is much bigger than it looks
9- I'm 6'2" and over 260 pounds. plenty of room, and leg room
10- Too many more to mention!

Weakness:

The only trouble I have had is with the Dealer in Reading, PA. He agreed on a selling price, then ordered the car I wanted. We waited for delivery, and when he called to tell me thwe car was in, he asked me to stop in on my way home. I did so, and he told me that the salesman who took my order mis priced the car, and quoted a price $ 2000 less than what he said he should have charged. I told him when I placed the order I did not try to get the car for less, and was willing to pay his price. He want3ed to charge me more, and I told him I had a signed sales agreement on his price. It took three days of discussions before he agreed to let the car go. It was a very unpleasent transaction. Their service was also similarly not good. I made an appointment and asked if the parts were there for the requesrted work. They said they were, and when I went into the shop, they knew nothing of my appointment, and did not have the items necessary to do the work which they agreed to do when we signed the sales agreement.
I normally use a small local shop which is not an authorized VW shop, but their work is so much better. I will take my car there, and keep the records of all work done (for warranty proof.)

Try one yourself... you will see what I mean, and probably have the same reaction.

Strength:

DIESEL, 50 plus miles per gallon, fuel is cheaper/not subject to high price fluctuations, high fit and finish, smooth and quiet car, beautiful styling, luxury options available (leather, sunroof, heated seats/mirrors/washer nozzles etc), excellent automatic trans, proven history of long lasting drivetrains, 12 year rust warranty,

Weakness:

Ride is very soft but still handles well, trunk opening is small, rear seat do not fold down without moving front seat forward (and squeezing the 6'0" driver), engine very slow to warm up and produce heat, very poor dealer service/knowledge, low ground clearance, short warranty term for Canadians (powertrain 5 year/80km) where as USA gets 10 year 160km,

First off, the car is fully loaded, auto trans, leather, sunroof, cold weather package etc. I am very happy with the car! You cannot compare this car with Honda Civic's or Toyota Corolla's, it is in a much more pretigious class! I could not touch it with a similarily equipped Camry, Accord, Maxima and the diesel engine added $1000 to the price tag. I would compare this car to a small Mercedes or Audi A4, not econo boxes. It really is a step above the older offerings from Volkswagen. The dealers are very profit oriented, not customer friendly at all. I visited MANY dealers trying to find the car, and walked away frustrated from most. The service departments have little idea on proper maintanace for a diesel engine too (most use the oil in the engine!!!). The automatic transmission is very smooth and adapts well to the diesel, using low revs/torque. It has a quiet highway ride thanks to the excellent gearing too (3000 rpm @85mph). The engine just purrs, no one will believe your driving a diesel. Very simple maintenace too. I have had few problems, the air bag light came on and required an in stock part (same day fix) under warranty, and wheel balance weights coming off. The heated seats are excellent!!! The cd changer improves the stereo sound really well, and never skips. The seats are not as supportive as past VW Jetta's I find, alittle uncomfortable on really long trips.
