Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

Model Reviewed: Jetta GLS TDI

Strength:

Excellent MPG, smooth quite ride, good accelaration (for 90hp), standard features, looks, stock 8 speaker stereo system, 6cd changer, keyless entry, 5speed,

Weakness:

steel wheels/tires, cornering, back seat room, foot rest, worse cup holders I've ever seen

By far this is the best car I've ever bought, and I have bought many. The car is smooth, comfortable (except for the left foot rest), quite and has great looks.

It's got absolutely the best sounding factory car system I've ever heard, and that's for the stock system (definitely get the cd changer with it). The GLS come basically loaded except for leather, alloy wheels and sunroof.

Although it's only rated at 90hp power, it's got 155 pound of torque at 1700 rpm which slingshots the car forword. You really won't have any problem getting on the highway with this car. You can tell it's a diesel when you have the windows open, but once you get going it sounds like a normal "gas" car.

This car is also quiter them my 99 Accord V6 I used to have, and most cars out there. The suspension is just as good except for the skinny 195/65-15 tires on it. I think this is why the car corners like sh#@.

My friends love this car and the only thing they did not like was the back seat room. It is a little tight, but I think comfortable enough except for very big people.

The only big negative I have about this car is the stupid cup holders and the foot rest. Somehow VW placed them just above the radio and when you have a drink in the cupholder, you can't play with the radio.

The foot rest on this car is made for shorter people. I like to stretch my left foot when I'm driving (especially with the cruise control on), but I can't because the foot rest is so far forward and my left leg gets tired. However, on long trips I simply move the seat most of the way to the back, but still close enough to reach the pedals, so that my leg is not bent and I can stretch my left leg.

These small negatives are far outweighed by the many positives I've had with this car. I've put over 1600 miles on it without a single problem. I've average 45 & 46 MPG on highway/street driving on my first two tanksfulls.

I highly recommend the Jetta TDI to anyone. Singles, couples and small families. Test drive a TDI. You'll be surprised. I was.

Handling is great, cruises nicely at 100/120 Km/h. Interior is very roomy. Fuel comsuptions is not bad. Don't even get me started with looks!!!Braking is good.

Weakness:

4 cyl. lacks power. Too much break dust.

This is the best car I have owned yet. I don't think I would buy anything but a VW. Although I would spend the extra money for the bigger engine. This car is just a ball to drive. Great car for somebody looking for a good looking european car without having to give an arm and a leg. My Jetta cost $26,000.00 Cdn. It's fully loaded.

Strength:

Great looks both interior & exterior. Blue colored instrument panel lighting is eye-catching. Very good acceleration w/ 6 cyl (20mph in city, 25 highway). You're hitting 60 before you know it. Shifts very smoothly. Handles like a BMW. Solidly built as evidenced when you shut the doors. Very low maintenance. Many standard features that you would pay for on Honda Accords. Monsoon sound system blasts. Supposedly very safe when in an accident although haven't tested that yet.

Weakness:

Rear leg room is enough for kids but tight for adults. Roof may be low for 6'2" and taller. Reclining seats is an inconvenience due to the standard VW crank design.

You can't get a 6 cyl. Honda or Toyota for this price ($19.8K w/out tax & license). Friends who have driven it want to trade their Hondas in for this. Few weaknesses are greatly overshadowed by all the amenities. Makes you look forward to driving to the market to get groceries even during Monday Night Football.

Strength:

Exterior and interior styling are unmatched in this class. Blue lights are swift, good quality materials, smooth leather, monsoon system is powerful, lots of standard equipment.

Weakness:

Crappy shifter! Shifter is very notchy and balky. I had to cut the shift rod down to reduce the long throw, which helped a little bit. It's still very stubborn though. 4 cylinder engine raises a ruckus over 60mph. Suspension is a little soft. Everyone complains about rear legroom.

I got my GLS loaded with leather, luxury package (alloys and sunroof), monsoon system, cd changer. I would have liked to go for the basic package without any of these options, but dealers don't have many in stock (except the ugly green and maroon coloured ones). Total price was 19,500. If I skipped the options, I would have only paid a little over 17,000 but again, availability is limited. You have to take what you can get. I considered a Civic SI, but the interior is too crappy. I am very happy with the jetta, except for the shifter which feels like a rod stuck in a pile of rocks.

Handling

Weakness:

Everything except handling

Test drove it and loved the way it handled...waited for a dark blue one to come in and paid just over 15k for it. One week later the brake pads broke free. Had the car for nine months and the only month it wasn't in the shop was during the first two weeks I owned it because the dealership's ASE Tech was on vacation. The longest period of time I went without it was just under 40 days. The paint faded and portions if the car had to be repainted four times, I had numberous electrical problems, portions of the dash fell apart, the brakes were repaired twice, the rear window had to be replaced, the drivers seat broke free and new supports had to be put in and if I sat here and remembered the rest of the items I turned over to the Volkswagen reps I'd be here all night. It was a horrendous experience! The states's Attorney General contacted me two weeks after I had sold the car and wanted to know if I still owned it and if I was willing to testify against Volkswagen in a class action law suit to get them to take it back since so many others such as myself were running into similar problems. In German the word Fahrvernuegen means "driving pleasure". My German word for it is Furchtbarfahrvernuegen which means just the opposite.

Strength:

Very rooomy trunk and interior.

Weakness:

Electronics are terrible and the front end needs work. This good bad 2-4 things at a time

I paid 6000 dollars Cdn 3 years ago and I thought I was getting a good deal. I would NOT recommend a VW of any kind from 89-92. It will just be a big money pit and still unreliable

Strength:

Good gas mileage, sharp looking, good power for a diesel, you can see the care that they put in the design in the interior for user friendlieness, for example cup holder, flip shade between the rear view mirror and the roof, flip lights for the blinders, automaticly locks when you go above a certain speed and when you unlock it but never open the door for a certain time, trunk space very large, quietness of the diesel, interior night lights are cool, and day running lights. Comes with alarm and front+side airbags.

Weakness:

No leg room in back, black interior on my black jetta, the radio could use some more wattage it is not powerful enough, looks so good I'm afraid of parking near someone else.

I love my Jetta, it is a cool car which I need rims and a cd changer because it is a GLS model. It is perfect for those types who do not need a family car(look for sports utilities) or any expensive sports car. The Jetta combines a styling that is for those who want a hip sophisticated sporty look with the sensibility of the basic features that accompany the Jetta. Damn that is good, I could be a VW PR person, but so is my Jetta.

Awesome engine, moves even with an automatic transmission, build quality is comprable to BMW and Audi for about 10 grand off the price. Quiet ride, great stereo. Loaded with options (like rainsensor wipers, walnut woodtrim) that you can't even find on some cars costing thousands more. People look at it as if they were looking at some exotic.

Weakness:

Very little leg room in back seat. Car is so popular and the wait list was so long, that I had to settle for an automatic. Attracts too much attention.

~$25,000.00
In this price range I was looking at a base model
3-series or an A4. The price is slightly high, but entirely justified for what you get. This is my first German car, and after driving it, I'm convinced never to go back to Japanese cars. Since I'm only a college student, the Jetta was just the best deal for the price and it has killer looks. I'll wait to buy the more expensive/prestigious car when it's more feasable. I love this car!

good looks, sense of refinement, cool commercials, chicks dig it

Weakness:

weak engine, no auto locks?

I bought the new Jetta GL in silver through Autobytel back in March for around $16000 including tax. However, this means absolutely no options. The GL stock version comes pretty well-equipped except for lack of power windows. I should have waited for the 1.8T engine, though. Well, I plan to upgrade my car with bigger tires and wheels as well as aftermarket engine modifications...
