Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

Strength:

Great engine, ride and features. More bang for the buck than any other car you could compare it to.

Weakness:

WOrst warrenty in the entire automotive industry, 2 years 24,000 miles?!?!?!?!?!COme on.

I really love this car so far. Only had it for 1000 miles and the only complaint I have is that there seems to be a rattle in the driver door that I can't solve. Great sporty drive. I got the loaded GLX with sport suspention, 17 inch wheels and all the goodies. Silver with Black leather interior. I highly recommend the VR6. Great low-end torque and it's got the highway passing power and decent speeds that the 1.8T just doesn't. Engine runs very smooth. Climate Control system is sooo much better than the dials. Love the self dimming mirror and the radio controls on the steering wheels. This car is so much fun but it's hard to stay within the speed limit.

Strength:

This car looks nice. The engine runs well. I look cute in it.

Weakness:

The cheap plastic it is made out of. The ground is low- so the front of the car gets caust on things. The goo dripping Oh and its habit of dying for no reason. Goo (which is sealent to keep the rain out) drips off the car

My 99 jetta was doing ok- I was inticed by the blue dashboard lights. Minor problems occured then disipated UNTIL the 2-year warranty was up THEN- I noticed my car oozing greasy goo from beneith the doors, One night during a heavy rain storm my front side passenger window decided to drop into the door. NO PROB this was not MY fault- HMMMM the waranty was up when--- 2 weeks ago. Today I sit here with my 99 jetta in teh repair shop- I t decided to die on me 2 days ago- the battery the starter- I tried to jump it it goes then wont restart At least I spent the time in which I was stranded well- I reattached the cup holder that broke for no reeason- and I also attached a piece of the junkey front bumber that has Ripped Off.

Strength:

The VR6 motor, the clean styling, the luxurious interior, The strong VW aftermarket, and the VW enthusiast community.

Weakness:

So far my problems have been, 1 Window regulator failure, and one broken sunroof. I didn't like the suspension much, so I got some stiffer springs and shocks, which dropped it about 1.5 inches and made it look so much nicer.

This is an awesome car, I love it to death. I've had it for 2 and a half years now and its just as great as the first day I drove it. The VR6 Motor is awesome, tons of torque to push you back into your seat. It pulls hard all the way to the electronic rev limiter at 130 miles per hour. The interior is excelent, with lots of details that make it on par with most luxury vehicles. It's a small car, but there is plenty of room inside. The styling is drop dead gorgeous, Every time I walk away from my car I look over my shoulder just to admire it.

Strength:

GET TO HEAR GIRLS SAY... "HOW CUTE...," "WHAT A FUN LITTLE CAR...," "YOU LOOK SO CUTE DRIVING THAT CUTE CAR..."

ALL I GOTTA SAY IS, "SHUT UP!!!"

Weakness:

AS A COLLEGE STUDENT, IT IS VERY AGGRAVATING TO FIND, DURING THE VERY FEW TIMES I ACTUALLY USE IT ON-CAMPUS, LITTLE TINY PROBLEMS (IE - MALFUNCTIONING GAS DOOR RELEASE BUTTON, BROKEN GLOVE COMPARTMENT LATCH, FLIMSY CUP HOLDERS - FRONT & REAR, DETERIORATING LAYER OF COATING ON SIDE PANELS, AIR VENTS THAT DON'T BLOW AIR OUT OF THEM, OUTLETS THAT DO NOT EMIT ELECTRICITY)...

...NOT TO MENTION PHANTOM ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS (OXYGEN SENSORS, AIR FLOW WIRING), WINDOWS FALLING & SHATTERING DOWN INTO THE DOORS, FRONT EXCESSIVELY LOW BUMPER AND GRILLS FLYING OFF AT PARKING LOTS, FRONT & REAR "STROBE" HEADLIGHTS (ANALOGOUS TO THE FANTASMIC LIGHTSHOW AT DISNEYLAND), ERRATIC CD CHANGER IN THE TRUNK, MUD STAINS ON THE BACK SEATS AND SIDE PANELS DUE TO THE CLAUSTROPHOBIC BODY CLEARANCE IN THE BACKSEATS (aka - SUB-TRUNK)... ETC, ETC,ETC,

AND YOU ASK... SO, HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED ALL THESE PROBLEMS? YES, I HAVE! THE INTRODUCTORY VW ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTION PERFORMANCE OCCURRING DURING THE FIRST MONTH I HAD THE BRAND-NEW VEHICLE WHEN THE "CAR" WOULD NOT START DUE TO SECURITY FEATURES. SINCE THE UNKNOWLEDGABLE MECHANICS HAD TO WAIT FOR WORD FROM THEIR FASCIST REGIME BACK AT THE MICHIGAN HEADQUARTERS, THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO RETURN "IT" TO ME UNTI AFTER TWO WEEKS.

WHAT DO THE VW JETTAS, NOKIA CELL PHONES, AND APPLE MACs ALL HAVE IN COMMON? THEY ARE ALL MASS PRODUCED AND VERY APPEALING TO THE EYE. HOW DO THE JETTAS STAND OUT AMONG THESE COLOR-CHANGING CONTRAPTIONS? WELL, THEY FALL APART, ARE UNRELIABLE, AND ARE BASICALLY PIECES OF $#!+.

I WILL ADMIT, HOWEVER, IT IS A VERY FUN CAR TO DRIVE - REMINISCENT OF DRIVING A GO-CART FOR THE FIRST TIME AS A 10 YEAR OLD... IRONICALLY, THE QUALITY OF THE JETTA I OWN HOLDS UP TO THE LOUSIEST OF GO-CARTS

Strength:

Gas mileage and driveability.

Weakness:

The service dept at Ancira VW in San Antonio, TX was not customer friendly on any occasion. On delivery, the left headlight bucket was not secured (fixed in short order). After 3 months the climate control panel lights went out (also fixed in short order). The AC is not as strong as we are used to. I have a Ford Windstar that cools faster.

After 2 years and 20k miles the car seems to be holding up well. Haven't encountered the oil useage, window problems, or paint problems that appear to be prevalent. It is a bit unnerving that VW recommends oil changes at 10k miles (we keep it at 3k with synthetic). We're happy with the 2000 Jetta GLS to this point. The ratings are based on our experience so far.

Strength:

Good body - strong metal does not rust easily

Weakness:

Cooling system - the car overheated the first day I bought it
No cup holders
Almost everything

I bought this car in the summer of 1997. It seemed to be ok when it was test driven, when I brought it home it was a different story. It`s been a terrible experiance from the day I bought it. It needed too many repairs and it was expensive to fix.

It all started with the first day I drove it. (after buying it) After about 15 minutes stuck in heavy traffic it overheated! IT OVERHEATED THE FIRST DAY I HAD IT ! I brouht it back to where I bought it, they drained the antifreeze and refilled it and told me to keep the radiator fan on while driving it. This was my first car. I didn`t know much about cars back then. I didn`t know that the fan was only supposed to come on when the engine temperature goes above a specified point. If you leave it on all the time while driving it will drain the battery. I didn`t find out untill a few months later when I took it to a mechanic and he explained it to me.

I also had problems with rough idling. I would put the car in ignition and after about 5 seconds of idling it would stall, I would have to turn the key 2 or 3 times to get it started if the car has been sitting in one spot for a day or so. I tried a variety of fuel additives and the only one that worked was STP water remover.

After that was over, my power steering was making a loud humming noise, I took it a shop they worked on it and a week later the problem returned. A few days later I even saw that shop on the news! They were charged for sellng parts from stolen volkswagens. Then I took it to a Volkswagen dealer they told me it needed a steeling rack and a right inner cv boot, it costed me $1200.

About 3 months later I had to replace a couple of engine mounts which costed me more money about $700 I can`t remmember exactly how much and I don`t want to remmember.

After that to make a long story short I made more occasional repairs for the next 2 years and then the car started to lose antifreeze. Again to make a long story short, it needed a head gasket, cylender head and a catalytic converter. I repleced the converter and I sold it.

This car needed to many repairs. IT`S A LEMON DON`T BUY IT

Some of the reviews on this site say that Jettas from 1988 to 1992 are cars to avoid. I agree with that, 100 percent.

Weakness:

interior is a beast to keep clean. The cloth seats seem to be a magnet for lint and other foriegn objects.

My Volkswagen is nothing short of exemplary. The first time I sat behind the wheel, I knew it was definitely me. The tight handling and suspension is exceptional. The 1.8T provides more than enough torque and horsepower for quick acceleration and uncompromising responsiveness. Even though it is a relatively small car, It still provides the driver with a "big car" feel. This is the result of the engineers at Volkswagen giving attention to the economy of space while looking at the ergonomics. I also enjoy the sleek and sporty design that demands lookers by to stare in awe. Surely, one's senses are overloaded with the precision and engineering inate to german automobiles. Whenever I drive it on the freeway, I reminisce of the years I traveled on the German autobahn. I can babble endlessly about this fine automobile. However, If I had one word that could describe my experience thus far, It would be.....Kick-ass!!!

Model Reviewed: 1.8T Wolfsburg Edition

Strength:

Looks, quickness, handling, fuel economy

Weakness:

Many quality and repairs in less than 3 months...

1) broken window regulator (both sides)
2) alarm LED burned out
3) engine stalls often for no apparent reason (dealer cannot find anything wrong)
4) door wind noise (driver side)
5) door leaks water (driver side)
6) doors poorly adjusted (looked crooked day one)
7) wind deflector had to be adjusted 5 times (dealer ineptitude though)
8) driver side seat creaked/cracked during driving (seat frame replaced)
9) rattling on the driver side door (dealer says it is normal?)
10) a light exists for cruise crontrol (which I have) but it is not functional (design intent according to the dealr?)

Although many items are small in isolation, after dropping $25K Canadian and having my car at the dealer 15 times in less than 3 months, it is simply unacceptable. I hope that people who say to stop whining about small defects do not open a business as it will surely be short lived. If we do not complain, VW will never improve their quality. The Japanese use continuous quality improvement and pay attention to every (big/small) defect which is why they win the quality awards each and every year for over a decade at least. Why do you think the VW warranty is so short??? They know about the quality issues and would lose hundreds of millions repairing these defects.

The car is a joy to drive on the open road. It is quick, handles well, and looks great. Reliability and (lack of) wuality is definitely an issue thoigh (see below).
