GLS 2.0 automatic
Strength:
Very responsive even with the 2.0 engine with automatic transmission, excellent handling summer and winter (even in one foot of snow), better visibility than most other cars because of the driver's position, very comfortable, practical sunroof, and I just can't believe I already had another car without heated seats.
Weakness:
Less economical than advertised, but the engine is still in his break-in period, where the consumption is worse because of the friction. The 2002 and 2003 NBs are now very reliable. If you plan on buying one, forget all those complaints about 1998, 1999 and 2000. Just buy one of those years NBs and choose one from the 2001 to 2003 models. You won't regret it! Strength:
Cute. And I really love driving it.
Weakness:
Terrible support from VW; don't stand behind their product. My heart is broken! This was my dream car until it became a nightmare. I bought it used with only 8,000 miles and it has been one thing after another. The worst? My air conditioner broke down at 28,000 miles and VW refused to cover it. It cost me 1,200. Today, the sensor lights (which flash on and off inexplicably and have not been able to be fixed by VW after numerous trips) came on and then my car melted down in the interstate. DON'T BUY A BEETLE!! |

SO DISAPPOINTING AND EXPENSIVE Terrible, terrible car! I was so excite when I purchased this car, but over two and a half years would up replacing the engine (burned oil like nobody's business beginning day one!),dash sensors (twice - not covered under warranty), driver's side window mechanism, and these are only the major things. I pretty much doubled the price of the car in repairs. Similar Products Used: Mazda 626 Mazda 323 Honda CRV (All of these were wonderful vehicles!) |

Good Looks, handleing, parking...
Weakness:
Batery died in less than 2 years. Timing belt broke. Head light died less than 2 years. Back Break Caliper frooze and ruined both pads and rotor. Cost me close to $500 BAD CAR. Maunfacture and Dealer both stink. Dealer lied about car needing front break job at $500 and then failed to find rear malfunctioning break caliper which cause more problems. Manufacturer paid 50percent of bad part ($96.) Dealer only paid (10percent of total bill ($40.)New battery caost me $55.00. New Headlight Cost me $71.00. The eND... No really, the end of this car. Strength:
Great looks with my ladybug additions, decals, large wing and side scoops; eyelids. Interior ladybug mats, a stuffed ladybug, flowers and a SMILE. Gas better than the Bonneville by far. The Bonnie DID take very long trips in smooth comfort, but the bug is also good for 2 passengers.
Weakness:
Horrid cup holders. The adaptable holder for arm rest so close to anyone bigger than a flea that elbows send any cup flying. Wind noise and noise from driver window. Service Dept Ok but they kind of act like you "worry too much". I am curious as to what will happen when an extended warranty item breaks. Hmmmmmm I have always been a bug lover; never miss wearing everyone OUT playing PUNCHBUGGY! My son owned 2 old Beetles - a 71 & 72. So when the new ones came out, I wanted one so bad I could TASTE it. Needless to say, I finally got this car when we sold our beautiful Bonneville to my mother whose car had died a final death. The ride is so much FUN and I honestly have had few problems with it. I had squeaky electric windows and still lots of wind noise. Otherwise nothing has fallen off, broken or peeled off. I am in the VW local car group and in Punchy heaven!!!!! Weakness:
-Can hear the wind whisteling through the car pretty good when driving AHH! I've had my beetle for 10 months and I'm TERRIFIED at these reviews! I love my Beetle, got it as a graduation gift after my old car died. It was bought used with 34k on it. When I bought it, the driver's side window would stick, fixed for free. Both headlights went out, fixed by a private mechanic for $100. (He said the lights were horrible to change but still charged us 0 for his work.) My battery died, private mechanic $100. I have not taken it to the dealership the original owner purchased at because I was afraid they'd rip me off, and I'm almost glad from what I've read so far. That's all the problems I've had, I have 46k on it now. My interior still looks great, no chips or anything. I don't understand why some people have had problem after problem while others have had almost none like me. Also, this summer I took a trip and drove from northeast Ohio to Hilton Head, South Carolina. 14 hours there and 14 hours back with no problems what so ever. Also, a friend came with me both of us are 18 year old girls and we managed to fit 2 huge suitcases, 2 beach chairs, 24 pairs of shoes, and other miscellaneous in the trunk. (Don't ask me how.) E-mail me at Meereedith@aol.com if you wish to discuss Beetles! Question-I have an automatic, anyone else? Similar Products Used: -2002 Volkswagen GTI (Great car!) -1993 Pontiac Sunbird *What a lemon! Bought for 4k, ended up having the worse engine ever made, would have been 1k to fix! Sold for $500. Died at 83k, bought at 68k |

everything The day I first got the car used, it my battery died. After a few months, at least one headlight was always out, my back windshield shattered for no reason, the window buttons broke off, the A/C broke, my check engine light is always on, I've had my transmission replaced at under 50k miles, the rubber strip around the door fell off, my handles on my seat fell off, my tape player broke, the plastic piece that covers the bottom of the engine deteriorated and fell off. I bought this car with only 13k miles ! Do not buy this car, please send e-mail if you've had the same problems. littlekrazygirlaol.com |

Great fun to drive, fast engine, great stereo (Monsoon)
Weakness:
Kinda loud on Highway (compared to a sedan), a little to much body roll I started reading some of these reviews, and thought I'd better share my relatively good experience. I've had my car for over 2 years now (28 months), and yes the window regulators have broken numberous times, and a piece or two from the interior has fallen off. I've even had the check engine light (extremely common among ALL cars, all it takes is a small hole in a replaced hose), BUT these have been not too bad. I wouldn't say it has been as reliable as a nissan, but hey this car is LOADS of fun to drive. You've got to be willing to expect some of that crap.... (Don't expect mercedes when it costs 15K-20K)... It is a beautiful car, a beautiful interior with a few flaws. BUY IT! |

Bug GLS
I have encountered several problems since purchasing my Bug just two weeks ago. First, the drivers side window switch broke, a fairly inexpensive repair. My second discovery is a reluctance for the trunk switch to actually pop the trunk without several attempts. Thirdly, and most disturbing, is the sporadic stretches of my airbag light remaining on. This means the entire system is disabled. My first repair attempt was "attaching a loose connection in the Airbag wiring harness" at a VW dealership using their own diagnostic equipment. Six days later when the problem reoccured, I returned to the dealership which then wrote a $560 repair estimate to replace not only the harness but the airbag itself. I cannot fathom replacing an unused airbag. I also found out from the previous owner that she'd encountered the same problem and had replaced the harness just over a year ago. This is a major safety concern, and obviously is an electrical glitch, defective manufacturing. No warranty covers this late model, low mileage car with a manufactured defect. This seems crazy to me. Buyer Beware! Thanks. |
