Strength:

quick, handles well, comfortable, quite, sporty in a unique way. Just plan fun to drive.

Weakness:

back seat as to be expected, course i don't sit back there lol, rather smallish trunk, needs a full size tach at least I do. could use a sportier seat, lets see, recaro's would be nice and while i'm at it,,lets see the new computer chip and some minor tweaks in the suspension..voila, a Porche in disquise.

paid 20,500, car listed for 21700, damn germans have this thing about price discounts..
I've never driven what the below summary's own..TDI's or the non turbo version..But i'd suggest to them to take a new 2k out for a ride, with the 1.8T of course.
This car will cruise at 100mph's without a hic-up, i feel very comfortable driving this car well in excess of 1 mile per minute, I've owned vets, 5 series Beemers, this little car is a blast and much more fun to drive than either of the above. I'm wait'n for the RSI to come out. Place my order now, 250HP, 17 inch wheels, audi's all wheel drive mmmmmmmm, and hopefully for under 30K.
I wanted a TT, but for the money and the rear seat, big bang for the buck.

Strength:

The very best feature is the mileage! I travel 57 miles one way to work and average 50 mpg. I have gotten 63 mpg. The deisel turbo is a pleasure to drive. I have had no mechanical trouble whatsoever with the vehicle. The turbo has real "guts", it handles very well.

Weakness:

A white deisel is not a very good color choice as the deisel DOES mark the area around the exhaust with a black film.
The handling in snow or heavy rain...the low profile is a bit of a problem when traveling over snow covered roads or areas of water ponding.
Side mirrors - definate blind spots. I was surprised and a bit disappointed by this. Younger drivers may not have the experience needed to adjust driving habits to accomodate for this loss of view.
Drink holders - can't fit my big coffee mug in the front holder! Coffee is IMPORTANT!

My reason for purchasing the BUG was mileage. The TDI has met and exceeded my expectations. It is FUN to drive! I put over 20,000 miles on the car in the first 6 months I owned it. NO problems.
The five speed manual transmission is a breeze to operate. If you expect a diesel to be as quiet as a gasoline engine you will be disappointed. Expect this deisel to be a "dog" as far as take off and power are concerned...you will be pleasantly surprised! The power with this turbo is exceptional.
Comfort - I have driven the car several times to Atlantic City (7 hour trip) and have found the trip to be very comfortable.
Back seat - it is a small car! No matter what small car you purchase, the back seat won't be perfect! I have found though that the adult passengers who have riden in the car do not have any complaints about the back seat. The front seats "open wide" to permit easy entrance and exit.
trunk - more space than I imagined!

People like the looks, G- ride

Weakness:

The car is made so cheaply. Most of the plastics easily break off(I don't know what I am going to do after the warranty wears off. The ride is harsh at high speeds and so is wind noise. The seats are uncomfortable and the back is cramped. Well its more than cramped the back is straight up and their is no head room or leg room, causing major back problems and bumps on heads if you hit a speed bump to fast. The trunk is tiny, way to tiny, anybody who says its big is lying. The Diesel is loud and crude and only gets maybe 40 at best. I chipped it with wetteur chip and it gets 115 hp which is hugely better than the sluggish car on the market. The stereo is the worst, they can't handle crap, I can't even turn it up half way without popping them, ooo! six speaker stereo-I said when buying the car. Now its just 6 of the worst speakers made in Tunsinia (where is Tunsinia?). I don't like the cars mostly made in 3rd world countries by slave labor. A sign of German engineering made in Mexico, tell me how that works. My cars transmission has blown up, literally, and nicely the dealers are complete retarded people, I met them. If thinking about buying at least wait till they come out with a version that is bigger and more head room in the back, sucks for your passengers and you got to hear them complain also complan about the cheapness of the car that should cost 5 grand less.

I paid 17.0 K and I would definitely not recommed it. Maybe if they improve it somehow with quality and use a natuarally aspired engine not turbo. I know VW and that turbo is the cheapest made in a sweatshop that will break down after 4 years and your left with the cost.

looks ,ride (if you like it firm),

Weakness:

speakers, some rattles, needs another gear, front foglight got cracked by rock.

love to drive it, love the color(silver) but i dont like driving 80 with the tach at 4000rpm. it does have some rattles but i will fix them my self.

buy a turbo, it costs more but the power is needed. the 2.0 is ok for driving around. I had a honda accord before this car with all the performance tricks and it was much more of a stoplight racer but this car would keep up on a windy country road.

If you love volkswagons you will like the nb but if you have never experienced there little quirks then you might feel like you bought a lemon. most all vw have little problems with door handles, exhaust hooks, swithes things like that. The engine and tranny have always been strong.

Strength:

2000 GLX (1.8T engine) Great power & styling. Car (silver) looks like a jewel inside & out. Interior room deceivingly greater than it looks like from the outside. Easy access to back seat with clever design. Fit & finish.

Weakness:

So far, only complaint is blind spots, especially front driver's side windshield pillar. Hope I don't experience the longevity proglems cited by other reviewers.

Paid almost a $1,000 less than sticker by doing some internet shopping & having dealers complete with eachother for my business. Would definitely recommend that route to others. It also helps to shop at end of month, end of quarter sales timeframe, as they bent over backwards to sell me a car.
Overall, couldn't really be happier thus far. With the turbo engine, 16" Michelin low-profile tires, MacPherson struts, the car is extremely fun to drive. Styling is, needless to say, unique & eye-catching.

Considered other cars - Subaru Forester, for example - but for price, features, handling & basic pizzazz, nothing came close.

Strength:

It is a total blast to drive, the steering is precise & it handles great. A 5 speed is a must. Great gas mileage, surprisingly large cargo with the seats down. great Torque and bhp in the rpm range. the crash safty and the 4 airbags + the ladies dig it ;)

Weakness:

small parts like switches and buttons fell apart after 6 months but no major problems, the "A" Pillar sometimes gets in the way on a long winding turn. mushy gear box. on the highway, it screams for a 6th gear. 0-60 in 9 ticks!

I was lucky to sign up early for the bug so I only paid $16,500 for on of the last 98's made. I wounld't trade it for the world. it is pure joy.

Strength:

I love the cars handling, overall styling in and out. The braking is excellent and the turbo really makes the difference in this car. I'm a fairly large guy and I found more leg room in this car than in most I have test drove.

Weakness:

The knob adjuster for the seat back, no temp. gauge, weird placement of drink holders, glove box.

$22,000. I have had excellent customer service follow up from the dealership I bought my car from. They have actually made this car buying experience a pleasure-(so far)-and I really dreaded going to a dealership up to that point. I would recommend this car to anyone looking for something different--not the typical boxy look.

Strength:

Nice looking, fun to drive, comfortable/roomy interior. I thought the power and handling ability were very good. Much thought went into performance as far as tires, safety, engine, etc.

Weakness:

Total squeak mobile! After 1 1/2 of listening to all the rattles and squeaks, I couldn't stand it any longer. After numerous trips into the dealership to fix a persistent hatch problem that caused it to continually vibrate and rattle, and calls to the VW reps for consultation, the answer I got from the dealership and VW was that they weren't going to work on my car any more. How's that for customer relations and quality contol? I am in total agreement with the person from Mexico that service was horrible. I also ended up selling my car for what I believe was a loss, and ended up buying a Mercedes 280. No rattles there and the customer service is excellent. VW could learn a view things from their german counterparts. I will never deal with VW or Peterson Auto Dealers again.

Paid 17-18,000, sold it for 13,500. I thought I would be getting good value for my dollar, but I just don't believe that this car would last integrity-wise.

Great performance for a diesel engine and road handling like no other in its class. At 80mph you can negotiate any thing the road has to offer.

Weakness:

Interior lighting blind spots so big that you could miss a B52 Bomber.

This is the deal on the diesel (TDI) engine. With a 15 gallon fuel tank and 43 to 48 mpg you get over 600 miles to the tankful. I can almost drive from S.F. to L.A., and back, with one tank full.....amazing! Considering that it is a deisel engine I was very surprised by the acceleration and overall performance. We have put over 45,000 miles in less than one year! We also had problems with our CD player, it had to be replaced twice.
