Strength:

Takes the hills with no problems, awesome climate control, rear audio, lots of room, 2 side sliders, tinted glass all around.

Weakness:

The only thing I don't like is the noise level while driving. Ford didn't do a good job of making things tighter and better insulated.

An extremely nice ride (save for the noise level) that exceeds all expectations I had. Plenty of power that easily gets our family (3 kids) over Snoqualmie Pass fully-loaded with little effort. Great OEM sound system, the climate control is one of the best I've seen. I give this machine an A.

Strength:

Well, it supposed to be safe according to surveys, but I haven't had any accidents, so that hasn't come into play.

Weakness:

Bought it used in '97 with 24K on it. Transmission went out in '99 with 75K mileage. Put new one in, second one went out at 82K about 6 mos later (I'm not kidding). Along with brakes and other odds and ends, spent nearly $6,000 that year alone in repair costs. Keys don't work except in passenger door. The dealership says keys are worn down (say what??). Electrical system is psychotic (check engine light comes on, take it in, they can't find any problems, sometimes after opening rear hatch, interior dome lights will stay on, need to take out fuse, then it gets reset). Brakes have always seemed to go out quickly through normal use. As time went on I feel steering has gotten worse. I'm unloading this pile o' crap within next two weeks.

Would never recommend this to anybody. Recently called dealership when my transmission/overdrive light came on, was discussing my past problems, and they were like "Gee, you've been the first that has had these problems!" Yeah right, and I was born yesterday. I noticed Consumer Reports is still dinging this pile about reliability for the new models...glad to see quality is still #1,356 out of 1,357 issues with Ford. I wrote a letter to the vice president about my transmissions, they said in return letter it was performing within specs or some such nonsense...nice specs.

Strength:

It rolls down hill.

Weakness:

Transmission, electrical system, head gaskets.

Biggest POS I've ever owned. Head gaskets blew at 65k, 2 transmissions, 4 vehicle speed sensors, electrical problems from day one. I will never buy a Ford product again in my life time. I will never recommend a Ford product in my life time.

Strength:

Interior space, Powerful engine(for a minivan), quality fit and finish inside and out, friendly dash layout, smooth ride, rear heat and a/c works very well.

Weakness:

somewhat loud(wind noise, and over harsh bumps).

My goodness you guys are hard on your vehicles or something. I owned an LX for two years (just turned it in, lease was up), and it treated me like royalty. It always did what I wanted it to do without any fuss or trouble. Powerful engine, maybe a bit loud, but a great performer. Very smooth ride. Cornered decent for a van and versatile. Can carry 7 people and all their luggage in comfort. I really liked it.

Strength:

Roomy, comfortable ride, good power, nice accessories. 0% financing for 4 years!

Weakness:

Quite a few warranty related issues.
Stalling problem. Overhead rattle. Right hand power mirror failed. etc. All warranty claims were handled with excellent service at Advantage Ford. I am now at 69,000 KM and outside of the warranty and a little worried. I just replaced a transmission sensor for $202 (CDN) which was making the transmission shift very erratically. I have a door chime that will sometimes stay on for a minute after closing all doors and driving away.
Engine vibrates at 1750RPM. Rear seat very heavy and awkward for 1 person to handle. Plastic centre cap on the aluminum rims rattle as you drive. Electical tape helped.

Paid $30,500 CDN. I would suggest an extended warranty with your purchase.

Size, Engine. Nothing outstanding, although everything is good. Its a minivan.

Tires. Tires. Tires!!!! I am sure Ford trys to put the worlds worst tires on their vehicles.
Resale is tuff when all the rental companys are unloading their product at the "Ford auctions"

Overall there really isn't anything wrong with this van other than the crap that is supposed to contact the road. Once you replace the tires for winter and summer driving you have a good reliable van.

Strength:

Nice ride, roomy and comfortable, good body and interior integrity.

Weakness:

Poor mechanical reliability, poor gas mileage (14 mpg in city).

We bought this car new. On each long trip the check engine light would come on, and the engine would periodically miss. This would go on for several days after the trip ended, then return to normal.

After several trips to the dealer over several years I happened upon www.consumeraffairs.com and read about similar problems being caused by a leaky head gasket. Luckily our car had low miles, and Ford did the head gasket repair at no charge, and the check engine light stopped coming on.

Then at 60K miles the transmission went out. It was repaired and then went out again, and again...

Bottom line is that my (and others) 1995 Windstar has some significant mechanical problems that one would not expect in such a low milage car.

Strength:

Four Doors (But what doesn't have this today?) Wonder why 3 Door minivans were ever made in the first place. Peppy performance.

Weakness:

Engine is very harsh at 2000 RPM, sending a buzz up to the gas pedal. Engine is also very noisey when accelerating. Horn button only works if you press on the seam on the airbag cover. Front seats are too low and don't go back far enough for over 6 footers. Front seats lack lower back support and are rather narrow. I recently rented a 1 Litre runabout car in Europe and it had wider and better supported seats than a Windstar! Second row seats rather squished for 3 adults. Lots of windnoise on a windy day. Driver's wiper misses a part of the windshield when it freezes. This part is right in the middle of the driver's view. 2 cental aircondition vents have no shutoffs, you have to fiddle with the louvres to close them. Vulnerable plastic bumpers ( but again everything is like this). DIY impossible, rear plugs inaccessible. Radio has ignition crackle on AM.
Paint has had to be refinished when new, hood paint looked like it had condensation on it but was dry. This engine has a chronic ping problem which the dealers cannot fix. They say it needs a modified valve cover with a deflector baffle to prevent oil being splashed up and drawn into the plastic inlet manifold. To date this part is not available!

I paid nothing, it's a company vehicle. I wouldn't pay half the new asking price for this harsh noisey van. It's strange, but it drives like an old vehicle compared to the 95 Windstar which I still own.
99 Not Recommended.
