GMC Safari Minivans | Wagons

GMC Safari Minivans | Wagons

DESCRIPTION

(1985 - 2005) Sharing the Chevy Astro's platform was its sibling, the GMC Safari. In addition to standard passenger uses, the vans were also available as cargo vans, and converters used them as the basis for small conversion vans. The Safari is powered by a 4.3-liter, 160-hp V6 with a 4-speed automatic. This van sits up to 8 passengers and ABS is standard.

Strength:

the seats removing, space available. Has good highway riding for trips and comfortable for passengers as well. also rear air conditioning is great for passengers.

Weakness:

I have steady wear on the brakes. I have a problem with the cadiletic converter that will need to be replaced. I have had this problem long before I have even paid it off. I also have a transmission that slams into gear. though I have had the trans. checked, they see no apparent problem. It continues to get worse. I am begining to question the manufacturing on this.

i am happy with the capacity to carry five teenagers and cargo around. the style is fine and removal of the seats is a wonderful luxury.

driving compares well with previous van we have owned and is actually roomier. although the mechanics are not all that great at 100,000 miles. we should'nt be having over haul repairs for the money.

Strength:

Traditional van design and characteristics. Good torque on the engine.
High ground clearance for easy oil change, servicing. Nice interior layout and roominess.

Weakness:

Pretty poor gas mileage. Brakes seem inadequate. Driver's legroom a bit cramped.

I really like this van so far. The interior is pretty well designed. There are a lot of little touches that add up such as the dual sun visor which is two pieces to block the side and front simutaneously, the sunglasses holder, and the tray under the front passenger seat. My van's interior showed good fit and quality though I can't attest to durability yet since I've only owned it for about a month.
I choose the Safari over the front wheel drive mini vans because I liked the Safari's traditional truck base and van type rear doors. The other mini vans have a family image and seem boring to me. The Safari is more a true van with modern improvements added on.

For me it was a choice between the Honda Odyssey and the GMC Safari. Ultimately I chose the Safari for its lower price and more rugged appearance. The Odyssey does have a fold away back seat which I really liked but its scarcity and high price at the dealers if you could find one was too much for me.
