Strength:

Engine power. Roominess.

Weakness:

Brakes went bad after one year; 22,000 miles of use and the dealership wants $550 to change out rotors and brakes. This problem seems to be rather common now that I have done some research. The 30K and 60k mile services are mandatory if you want to keep your "great warranty" and they are doozies at $650+ each. Also, the paint is really thin and scratches if the wind shifts directions.

Purchased this car after shopping around for a month. Looked at Honda and Dodge minivans comparatively. Liked the interior layout and responsive engine. Fuel economy not bad.
That being said the car has been falling apart after a year of ownership. Idler pully started screaming and had that replaced. Outside door moulding started curling and popping off; replaced. Had to replace rotors and brake pads at 22,000 miles, because the warranty only covers 12 months or 12,000 miles of wear, and the dealership wants $550 to change out the rotors and brakes. I have never had a cars breaks go so bad in such a short amount of time, and to top it off those are mostly highway miles not city stop-and-go!
Fuses keep blowing on the lighter and aux power outlets when I plug in my cell phone to charge..??
Adding insult to injury, I am closing in on the first 30,000 miles which means a hefty $650+ to do what?, change the fluids and do a once-over inspection.
I'm really wishing I had gone for that Honda or Dodge right about now.

Strength:

Smooth ride, like that the middle seat can be moved left or right; that's about it!

Weakness:

See above, also not much room behind rear seats for traveling bags, tents, etc.

We like the van features just not the service and problems: bought it new in 2003, am now on 4th a/c compressor in 5 years!! Was told recently by service adviser at dealership that 02-05 models had problems w/the a/c system so they redesigned it for '06 and newer but are making no concessions for those who have the 05 or newer models with this problem. Also, one of the sliding door handles was pulled off by my then 8yr old daughter-I was told it would cost $300 to order & replace it w/same color handle (I opted for the $50 different color we can do it now handle). The paint is also peeling on the other door handles. Another problem is that when it rains the doors lock themselves at random?! I did call a Kia Customer Care Rep who told me she will talk to a factory warranty? or something person who can say if he knows of this problem with the a/c & he can decide if Kia will cover it since it is now out of warranty; my question with that is are they going to cover the cost every 2 years? We have never had this many problems with a vehicle. And, also d/n like that Kia does not offer a rental vehicle when yours in the shop waiting for parts or whatever! Not a good van, we will never buy another Kia again and would not recommend to any one else to buy.

Smooth ride that is nice and spacious.

Weakness:

In the shop for mostly electrical repairs ALL the time.

Bought the vehicle because it beat out the Honda Odyssey for safety. Appeared to have gotten a "good deal," as the loaded Sedona was less expensive than the base model Odyssey. Less than one year later and we average one repair/month (mostly electrical)! Yes it has a great warranty, but you need it! I'm glad we don't have to pay for the repairs, but it's still very inconvenient and getting old. They are not always able to "locate the problem" which is also quite frustrating.

I can't think of one thing that I love about this van, the TV/DVD player is great but that was an after market installation, maybe it's why it still works?

Weakness:

Kia in general

Here are a few items to consider before buying a Kia Sedona mini van. The first 12,000 miles were fine. Between 13-80,000 miles I have spent close to $4000 on non warranty related repair bills. This does not include routine maintenance.

Brakes, rotors, headliner, hardware inside, slider door hardware, a/c and lines 2 times plus recharged it, it's still not working by the way, heater lines 3 times and control knob won't work on 4, transmission, windshield wiper motor and constant issues with back wiper, alternator, passenger seat belt, tie rod ends, wheel bearings, gas tank pressure problems, multiple engine leaks, brought it to kia for several check engine light and airbag warning light issues. There have been other problems as well. This van is not dependable, Kia never has parts in stock, each visit requires 3-4 days to fix, plan on this van breaking down every 3-4 months after the first year. I live 30 miles away from the Kia dealership and was promised a rental car when repairs were being made to my van, this promise lasted the first year only. The warranty has major loop holes, the tech's can never duplicate the problems during the first visit, the paint starts rustingt after 5 years. Gas mileage stinks. I was told by the General Manager at Berline City that Kia won't look for problems, unless it's safety related when they are making a diagnosis, the customer has to identify a specific problem. I guess you should only buy their vehicles if you are ASE Certified and can tell Kia excatly what needs to be fixed. After I was told that by the manager it made me realize Kia is not about satisifying their customers and I can not be convinced to buy another Kia.

Inexpensive

Weakness:

Unreasonable warranty.

The Kia warranty is filled with holes. I was driving my family on the New York State thruway in an ice storm when we started to experience car trouble. We had a grinding noise and got off to find that power steering fluid was low and we were leaking fluid. We quickly drove to the nearest auto shop that was open to have it repaired to the tune of $251. The power steering cooler needed to be replaced.

This product was under warranty, but Kia will not honor it because it was not done at a Kia dealer. Buyer beware: the NY State thruway is a "restricted road" not covered by Kia roadside service. Their tow trucks will not go on this road. On a previous occasion, I had to change a flat in a snowstorm on the thruway because Kia roadside would not come.

Even though I had my family in my car in an ice storm, Kia would have expected me to wait for a tow truck and go to a Kia dealer which would have been unable to help me on a late Saturday afternoon. We would have had to do two days of hotel stays to get the car fixed under warranty. The people at "customer care" kept referring me to page 10 of the warranty book. Read the fine print--there is no flexibility.

I would not buy a Kia product again due to this lack of help.

Strength:

Roomy, lots of leg room in front and back, air conditioner vents and controls in back as well as front, stow away back seats. 60,000 mile warranty , solid doors, well built. Supposedly priced lower than other vans like Honda and Toyota.

Weakness:

Dealer mark up.

Just bought a brand new Kia Sedona LX. We love the roomy van. We had a Mazda 5 and found it too small for three growing children. We also love the fact that the back has its own air conditioner controls. We felt we got a pretty good price but had to haggle a lot at the dealer. They wanted $29,000. we got it for $26,000. out the door.

Drive great, looks great, plenty of room

Weakness:

service and confused dealers

I actually love my van, have had no problems, except with service. Was told by Ragsdale that I needed to have my timing belt changed at 40,000 miles, called a mechanic to do it and was told that after contacting a Kia Supply store that I did not even have a timing belt that I have a timing chain and no maintance was required, so I called a few more dealerships and was given anywhere from 60,000 miles to 80,000 miles. Finally I called Kia directly and was told it should be stated in my owners manual I explained that it didn't even have timing belt in the index, so he looked and said that I had a timing chain and that there was no required maintenace but he wanted to check something else, came bach and said it needed to be done a 60,000 miles, but wanted to check something else, came back and said no he was right the first time it didn't need any maintenace. So I called Ragsdale and gave them a piece of my mind, they said that they had done plenty timing belt replacements and they would have the manager call me. The manager returned my call with in a few minutes asked what type of vehicle I drove and explained that the 2006 Sedona was the year they changed it and that I did have a timing chain and no maintance was needed for that. When I asked him why they had told me I need to have that done, he explained that they didn't have the model I drove down for some reason and that was what was causung the confusion. I know when I called other dealerships I told them the year, they even repeated it back to me and I was still told that it had to be done at 60,000. I am just wondering if anybody with a 2006 Sedona has had their timing belt changed at 40,000 or 60,000 miles and if you had you may want to contact Kia derectly and find out what they say and then you probably would like to contact your lawyer. I have even gone on line to a Kia parts place and they have no timing belt for a 2006 Kia sedona, I have also called other part suppliers and they have no listing of a timing belt for a 2006 Kia Sedona. My van is wonderful at 40,500 mile in a year and a half I have had no problems, knock on wood, but as far as Kia dealers go be very warey and get a second opinion because I have a feeling that if I had brought it in to have my timing belt changed they would have done it and charged me the $400, and not blinked an eye.

EVERYTHING FROM THE SELL TO THE SERVICE!

Purchased off of Truck and had to take it back for detail. From the first day, the right passenger window had a very bad wind noise. At 12,000 miles while driving down the road all lights shut down. Had to go in the shop. I took the van in 4 time for the window noise and they never heard it but twice they wrote it up for the WRONG window. The forth time it was OUT OF warranty and they charged me 44.50 and now it is NOT any better. Front head light burned out. Not covered, I even purchered the 100,000 mile warranty. After the promise they would call when they could get me in (7 weeks later) 1 week in the shop. I have something major wrong! Pulling out of a parking spot I could not turn my wheel, my brakes did not work and my ESC light was on. When I took it in I told them I heard a clicking noise in the steering wheel and was concerned about my air bag not working. It turned out to be my CLOCKSPRING! This could cause your air bag, horn, and cruse conrol NOT to work.
This time they said they might be able to get me in in about 4 days. I know how that will be, 7 weeks from now. I have heard other bad stories about Central Kia of Plano, Texas. I would NOT advice anyone to purchase from them. THEY DO NOT STAND BEHIMD WHAT THEY SELL!!!!!!!
