just below 30,000 miles, oil consumption rose and blue smoke on startup. dealer says that the engine has sludge, and that toyota will not repair it under warranty since this "obviously" indicates a lack of oil changes. my van has had regular oil changes. what a crap. it looks like toyota''s engines are investigated finally. they blame it on the owners, but looks like it''''s their bad design of toyota engines. read bellow: http://www.autonews.com/article.cms?articleId=38302 it''s unheard ,they refuse to fix their unreliable engines under warranty. the main reason we bought a toyota was for the reputation for reliability. unfortunately, toyota dealers use this reputation to avoid any kind of liability with problems related to a defect that would justify the return or replacement of the vehicle. the van also has several squeaks and rattles, especially in the dash and right side sliding door. rear brakes developed an intermittent squeal.

Weakness:

The car is unreliable: 1. Electrical: 2 out of 3 cig. lighters don''t work (short circuit when something is plugged in). The dealer repaired them but the problem came back and they are still not working. 2. Batteries: died after 22,000 miles. Dealer replaced new batteries. 3. Tire alignment problem: from the beginning. all 4 tires had to be replaced at 5,500 miles. 4. Tire balancing: vibrations in steering wheel while driving. Tire balance sensor light constantly came on.

On my way to work, the engine started to run very rough and the power reduced like the car was going to die on the road. Then the engine warning light came on. I took the car to nearest Toyota dealer. Toyota dealer found the problem, replaced all six fuel injectors still under warranty. The car ran fine for 2 days. However I noticed white smoke for 10 seconds when first started in the morning.I took the car back to Toyota .Complained to the General Manager. He drove the van and acknowledged the lack of engine power. Later, they found a new problem with the cam sensor. The parts had to be ordered. A new cam sensor was installed; however they could not find the reason for the smoke. The dealer kept the car for further investigations. Toyota found the problem. They opened the engine valve cover and discovered oil sludge. The dealer called and stated that the problem is not covered under warranty. They said this was due to lack of oil changes and then took back the loan car. They suggested I rented the car on my own . I provided the dealer proofs of receipts of all oil/filter changes that the car had over a period of 3 years (following the manufacturer''s recommendations), the first 2 with a Toyota dealer, and the subsequent ones done by my workers. According to the manager, Toyota will not consider this problem to be under warranty.

drives like a car, Crash tests GOOD, INSURANCE RATES GOOD, Consumer Reports Good Bet. good gas mileage, comfortable seats and enough room for our three wee ones and our big selves. I also appreciate the cd player and cassette player. I really like the heater! it works great. love the power rear windows. this van doesn''t drive much different lengthwise than my 83 buick, so not much of an adjustment there but definately more class LOL!

Weakness:

a little cramped for space in the back but the quad seating aleviates a lot of that. somewhat difficult to see out the back--rely heavily on mirrors--not really a problem because they are heated anyway. ITSY BITSY Glove compartment, and what''s with the crap under the passenger seat anyway? you can''t use it for storage because it has a bunch of heating or something its really hot! Brakes make a bit of a whine on occasion but hey don''t they all. not sure why the heat only comes out from the floor in the back and only a/c comes out from the ceiling.hmm.

HEY IF YOU ARE SERIOUS TO BUY A MINIVAN-- take it on a trip. You will learn in short order if its for you. I did just that and it narrowed my choices RIGHT QUICK! it stickered for 18900 I didn''t have to work too hard to get it for 16500 at 42k miles. and its in great shape I haven''t had my van for long,I researched until my face was blue--literally weeks folks. I am sick really seriously sick in the head but I am really happy with it.And happy I did it. Its at 42K miles and no smoke, so I''ll be first in line for oil changes at 3k miles Religiously!! I am overall pleased with the CRASH TESTS Which faired Good with NHTSA, Consumer reports GOOD BUY, Lowest Insurance Ratings for vans I was looking at 00 Caravan and 00 Town and Country. Lets be real guys the dealers think they know everything, do your research and you''ll figure out you can get this baby just over what they REALLY paid for it. not what they can sucker you into paying for it. No snob appeal here, but good bang for the buck!

I''m now at 17,000 miles and no problems whatsoever. I change the oil religiously every 3000 miles and have no "sludge" anyone who exceeds 3000 mi. intervals on oil changes deserves to get sludge. If you want the facts, I suggest you read the article at this web site--http://www.yotarepair.com/Sludge_Zone.html it explains in detail what sludge is and why it happens. In most cases, it is the owner''s fault.

Weakness:

sludge, poor customer service

My wife leased the Sienna after test driving every other van out there. She still loves the van. Problem is, we developed a sludge problem at 18000 miles. We had had three oil changes by this time, within the warranty terms, based on her driving style. I was called a liar by the dealership. I offered them receipts, they told me they were probably falsified by someone I know who changes oil. This from customer service. Their "800" number was no better, said that lack of receipts would not invalidate my warranty, but they will still back the dealer. Told then it must have been inferior oil. Anyone else use Jiffy Lube to have oil changes? Now at 34000 miles, just waiting for the engine to lock. NEVER NEVER NEVER will I own, drive, test drive another Toyota.

Weakness:

sludge, doors stick sometimes, a little noisy

We have owned our Sienna for over 4 years and were very pleased with it until yesterday when we discovered after our car failed to pass local emissions testing that our engine was "sludged" at 46,000 miles and that it would cost $6,500 to repair it. The dealer said that we must not have had the oil changed as recommended and that there was no use trying to fight it if we did not have the receipts (although we did have several oil changes at the dealership). When my husband, a lawyer, threatened to sue, the service manager explained that another lawyer in town had just had a similar experience with his Sienna and had sued in small claims court and had lost. We were shocked to see all of these reports on the web since this is our fourth Toyota and we have had great luck with the other three. This is definitely not a hoax. I would definitely recommend all Sienna owners to have the dealership change the oil every 3,000 miles. After recommending this car to several friends, I will never recommend it again.

engine -it appears you may need to spend 4-6 thousand dollars on maintance each 20,000 miles.

I have the sludge problem at 18000 miles. aaaAt 22000 miles the rear main bearing is destroyed. Of course Toyota cancelled the warranty due to lack of maintance. Now have a nice looking piece of junk. Does anyone know of a class action lawsuit going. If so please e mail me at comet402000@yahoo.com.

Strength:

Good salesman''s patience with deaf customers. Good demonstration on everything during the purchase of Sienna. Consumer Reports'' highly recommended minivan! Toyota as most popular brands. Smooth and quiet ride Good gas mileage as average 20 to 23 miles per gallon on town , 25 to 26 mpg on highway Nice seats

Weakness:

Too bad, Sienna doesn''t have fold down third row seats as Honda Odyssey, but NOT BAD AS Caravan. Removal of third seats is much easier than Caravan

We sadly traded in our good Oldsmobile Silhouette for Toyota Sienna CE after we researched the Consumer Reports that Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna are two best minivans in 2001. At first we almost chose Odysse, but it required 4 months of waiting list for making orders as big waste of time. Finally, we found the newspaper ad that Toyota was selling Sienna for the BEST price, so we ran to the dealership and fell in love with it. My wife test drove it and we fell in love with the smooth engine performance. The salesman was so patient with us as deaf customers by writing paper and pen for six hours with no breaks, wow. He showed us EVERYTHING like the Sienna''s functions, engine compartment and service department plus many financing options. Our Sienna has towing package option as high recommendation for our popup trailer (1,500 lb trailer). We were so impressed with Sienna''s good towing performance better than Oldsmobile Slhouette and 1988 Dodge Caravan V6 as smoother and firmer. Without towing, Our Sienna got 25 to 29 miles per gallon on our long trip to Ohio on the beautiful October foliage day. STRONGEST SUGGESTION: Oil changes should be done EVERY 3,000 miles INSTEAD OF 5,000 miles based on the car owner manual to AVOID SLUDGE, according to the Car Reviews. I don''t like to hear negative remarks on Sienna!!!! So far, our 2001 Sienna is 1,000 times BETTER than our trouble-making 1988 Dodge Caravan. My wife said DODGE, NEVER AGAIN!!!!! HOPE, Sienna will be the knock on the wood condition as we must ALWAYS ALWAYS bring it to the qualified Toyota Service for 3,000 mile oil change schedule, tire rotation every 2 other oil changes and big checkups at 30,000 and 60,000 miles, period!!!!

SLUDGE PROBLEM TOYOTA REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND POOR SERVICE FROM DEALERS

After owning a 1991 Corolla and a 1996 Corolla and having absolutely no problems whatsoever, we decided to go big with Toyota''s Sienna. It was excellent at first with no problems at all. Then at 39K, they discovered sludge in the engine. They refused to believe Toyota was at fault. This was the 3rd Toyota we''d bought brand new from them! We bought the 2 Corollas and had them perfectly maintained with the dealer and did the same with this van. I thought they''d at least realize after 3 vehicles, serviced and including every record, we couldn''t be at fault. WRONG. We are being blamed for poor maintenance. Yeah Right! We have ALL the records showing oil changes and maintenance! We were going to buy our daughter a new Corolla for her 16th birthday, but we''re looking into the Nissan Sentra now.
