Model Reviewed: Volkswagon Passat 1.8T

Strength:

Very nice styling, excellent interior layout with thoughtful controls and gauges. Great road feel with reasonable acceleration for a 4 cyclinder

Weakness:

Failed Ignition coil at 10,300 miles and abysmal customer service from VW of America. The "customer advocates" in the call center are ill informed, and rude to callers with questions that go beyond the "customer advocate's" script. I have never been so mistreated by a customer representative + supervisor. VW seems ambivalent to fact that a customer spends $26K dollars for their product and is concerned that the vehicle may be unsafe at highway speeds. The car has been parked a VW dealer for over 3 weeks waiting for parts. VW, thus far has refused to sanction the replacement of defective coils until threatened with a 93A (MA Lemon Law)notice drafted by a law firm.

I was drawn to the Passat Wagon for its Styling, Comfort, and Road Handling. I was duped by all the reviews (circa Summer 2002) into believing that the Passat rivaled Honda and Toyota in quality and customer service

Strength:

Build quality, heft, looks, drivability.

Weakness:

None so far, really

I've always loved VWs and dreamed of getting a new Passat wagon. We must have gotten a good one, looking at problems posted, because ours is nearly flawless after 31,000. Only a low-beam bulb ($15) replaced and warped rotors replaced free under warranty. The car is white, beautiful, spacious, leather interior gorgeous and comfortable, handling fun and stick shift/engine fantastic. We love this car - stereo rocks, fun to drive, looks fantastic. No coil pack problems yet. No squeaks, rattles, everything works right, feels right. A great car at a great price. Great road feel, car flies on the highway when necessary. 35 mpg+ at 65 mph. We would buy another one.

Model Reviewed: GLS V6 Wagon w/ manual transmission

Strength:

Great handling and power combined with a smooth and quiet ride. Fantastic design and build. Distinctive styling. Optional stereo is very good. Great traction in bad weather with the traction control, even without the 4Motion AWD system. This car makes me happy everytime I drive it.

Weakness:

It is a stretch to come up with weaknesses for this car. The main one would be the dark color of the interior on my car, which was impossible to keep clean for the first few months (The velour seems to have filled it's appetite for lint and is not so hard to keep clean now.) I would, in retrospect, have looked for one with leather. This is my only hesitation about the car. The gas mileage is a bit low, but I drive this car with enthusiasm.

I would certainly recommend this car. I felt a bit odd buying a wagon (I am a 22-year-old), but this car is a fantastic performer and looks cool too. Consider getting the leather interior and the Monsoon sound system. I feel like I am driving a BMW, but without the guilt of paying for and driving one. Also, this is my first experience with heated seats and I LOVE them! This is a great car. Anyone who has a lot of stuff to haul around should look at this car rather than an SUV.

The Passat wagon was the most solid, in terms of construction and performance, and was the only wagon with a 5-speed manual that was not out of my price range.

Model Reviewed: Passat GLX Wagon w/4Motion

Strength:

Attractive styling, powerful 2.8 V6 30 valve Audi engine (with a VW badge), wonderful quattro drive for 2000, tiptronic transmission is smooth and fun to use. Solid feel to the doors and body.

Weakness:

After 10 days of driving the scond key stuck in the ignition and could not be removed till later in the day. The chrome detent button on the stick shift fell off and I could not get the car into reverse. The car does not look or feel cheap or unreliable, but the reality was that after 10 days and only 277km it was partially disabled twice and had to be towed to the dealer.

$44,000 Cdn with all options. I feel that I have purchased a less expensive Audi A4 avant. $10,000 to $15,000 cheaper. More room (the chassis has been stretched), and with crappy low-end Michelin tires. All-in-all don't get me wrong. The car handles and performs excellent in ice and snow conditions due to the quattro( excuse me...4Motion) 4 wheel drive system. In defense of Volkswagon, the North American cars and trucks that we owned had a service life of 18-24 months, and parts fell off of them on a regular basis. Our Hondas regularily got 10 years of service with little or no maintenance, other than regular oil and filter changes. The Passat wagon is replacing a line of Ford Explorers. I just thought that $50,000 Cdn would buy a little more. Bad week to review this car (after two disabling incidents). Would I buy another? In a flash!!! They are wonderful on the road. Please email me anyone if you are thinking of buying and want to discuss Passats. Have a good day...

My wife has a 1999 Honda Accord V6 and nothing has gone wrong in over 6 months and two across the country trips. This compares well with our previous 15 years as Honda owners. I am somewhat nervous of the Passat. Is VW listening? Over the past 6 six years we have purchased new a 1995 Ford Windstar van, a 1996 Ford Explorer V8 AWD, a 1998 Ford Contour 4 door, and a 1998 Ford Explorer 2 Door 4WD. The Passat was our "let's make a stand, and get off of the leasing merry-go-round" vehicle choice. I hope that I made the right choice. Time will tell...
