Strength:

Engine (333HP) Body styling handling interior ergonomics and ease of driving.

Weakness:

Conv top is a little rattly when up. Gas mileage could be better but who cares?

This is my 8th BMW and 45th car overall (I am 40). Now that I own one of these, I will never have anything else (sports car). I drove a 911 and at 50% more price, it still lacks what BMW has always done - deliver performance, road feel, fit/finish and a perfectly designed interior and exterior. Take it from me, there is nothing that comes close all around at this price level. Mine is red/black with SMG, 19" rims - all options less Nav. EVERYBODY checks the car out - including cops!

Strength:

Perfect blend of muscle, finess and comfort! Confident handling in almost any circumstance I've run up against to date!

Weakness:

This car should have about 300HP and 300ft/lb torque and it would be perfect. Cost of Insurance. Beyond that, we'll see, based on what others have said, maintainance.

I bought this car with a little less than 31,000 miles on the clock. I drove it the next weekend from Minnesota to Arizona, about 1,900 miles. On a West Central Kansas hiway, got the top speed up to 140mph. I cruised most of the time at 90mph. What a great long distance car, with 26mpg. Unfortunately on Saturday, just south of Colorado Springs I lost a fitting on the fuel pump and was stranded over the weekend. Thanks to Winslow BMW of Colorado Springs for getting me back on the road first thing Monday morning in less than 1 hour and for less than $50! The rest of the way was great. The trip down the mountains on Arizana hiway 60 was phenominal. The car handled like it was on rails. And the 25mph "U" turns were run at redline in 2nd gear with great power on the exits. This car has some fine Dinan mods; chip, cold air intake and exhaust, probably good for another honest 35HP. In summary, am very happy with this machine.

Strength:

POWER!!! SMG transmission, very soft leather, cool paint color (carbon black metallic), 19 inch wheels with sticky tires, strong and clean body style. Better performance than Porsche 911, yet thousands and thousands less with a back seat that adults can fit into.

Weakness:

Gas guzzler tax...isn't the cost of gas punishment enough?

This is my second BMW. Had a 325i sedan for a year, and wanted something a bit sportier. This car is perfect in every way. Smooth ride on good roads and a good stiff ride when you push it to the limits. Faster than I ever imagined, and I had to because nobody lets you test drive them! The SMG transmission is the only way to go. Perfect blend of manual performance and the convenience of not having to push in the clutch pedal. Nobody can shift as fast or precise with the old fashioned clutch and stick. Gets decent gas mileage on the highway and dumps gas like a toilet when you're blasting off, which is why you get a car like this anyway.

Strength:

Everything, including amazing 40+mpg fuel economy in the country

Weakness:

Hard to stop driving it

I always wanted a BMW, the kids grown, two marriage bust ups and time for me!! The car I bought is Alpine white 3Litre 286hp 5 spead manual built in Munich. It has a Power chip fitted which pushes up the power to 307 and torque to 350Nm. The speed limiter has been removed and the fuel cut off upped by 400rpm which means that it will pull to 7800rpm. The build quallity is superb, the suade seats are the most comfortable I have experienced. if i were to describe the car in as few a words as possible, it would have to be simply, superb. I note the rave reveiws by the USA owners, you guys should experience a Euro one day, power is frieghtening, the sound of the straight 6 with individual throttle boddies is truly awsom. You don't need a stereo, the mechanical sounds are a symphony of delight. From the moment you put you're bum on the seat and turn the key to the moment you reach point B is non-stop pleasure, everytime, anytime. Accelleration is amazing, it builds turbine smooth, at 4000rpm you are plastered back in the seat, at 6000rpm you feel is if the thrust will snap the seat back. The tacho is blurrs arround to 7500 incredibly fast. This all happens with vibration free smoothness that just can't be described. Previous owner treated this car like a new born baby, is immaculate inside, outside, underneath. Never drove it on gravel, doubt he drove it in the wet either.

Strength:

Sound, power, handling, steering feel, looks, engine reliability.

Weakness:

Electronic system (particularly the airbags) needs work--expensive sensors always going bad; Stereo completely stinks; interior is accomodating but has too much plastic; I can't seem to get the perfect driving position (no tilt/telescopic steering wheel for starters, clutch travels too far), expensive to make big power upgrades to the car; my car idles funny when cold, despite dealer assurance "it's normal"; tends to drive like a civic--it's rev happy...low end grunt needs work; shortcomings in interior for price are very apparent--cheap cupholders, no storage space, no sunglass holder, no automatic garage door transmitter built into driver's sunshade, leather not as nice as competitors, one-touch operation of windows and sunroof one-way only in most cases; side mirrors look great but are worthless when you want to weave in traffic; interior buttons are not all backlit..can be hard to find in the dark, especially for people not used to your car.

Talk about a hard decision. S4 or M3. Let's see...S4 has better interior by far, more amenities, all-wheel drive, a 6-speed tranny, xenon lights, and is cheaper to modify. The M3 has better handling, gets slightly better gas mileage, looks better in my opinion, sounds better, and is a bit faster in stock form. Something drove me to buy the M3..probably the fact that I have wanted an M3 for about 10 years. Overall, I have had my fun with the M3, but my next car will probably be an Audi. The car is so much fun to drive, but it's overpriced for what you get. My complaints seem nit-picky, but with the vast choices out there for the same price (nissan 350z, Audi S4, etc.), this car feels outclassed.

Strength:

1. This car is "very" fast. My M3 does 0 to 60 in 5.8 secs. 2. Handling is awesome. Stiffness is just right for my driving needs. Excellent brakes, hardly ever fades. 3. First class interior. Instruments, gauges and knobs are all perfectly placed for driver's needs. 4. "Fun" to drive, this is where it counts!

Weakness:

1. Need's a 6th gear. 2. Upgraded HK stereo is still lacking in audio performance. 3. After warranty, it is very expensive to maintain. 4. For a $40,000.00 plus car, there should be more standard equipment like: cruise control, sunroof, & on board computer. 5. Leave it in the garage in the winter.

Always wanted a 4 door M3 sedan. New one's (1997 & 1998) at the dealership were to expensive and the dealer would not negotiate on the window price (at least in Colorado Springs). Had to wait for a used one with low mileage for a few years, but well worth the wait (they are hard to find, for a decent price). I was one of the lucky one's. If you follow and understand "European cars," this is the "Ultimate Driving Machine." It has great looks, lot's of power, superb handling, transport 4 adults in style and comfort. I have changed 2 things on it. I replaced (removed) the stock air intake with a cone K&N performance air filter and replaced the heavy stock muffler with a Magnaflow straight through racing muffler. My M3 now breath's and also exhale's better in the high altitude of Colorado. Very "FEW" cars stock can touch or even come close to an M3.

Weakness:

Noisy gear box ( normal ) Upgraded Napa Leather showing wear on the bolsters already and BMW won't replace.

The 333 hp scared me at first not being accustom to so much power on demand. Drives so easily it took 2 days to feel at one with the 3. I look forward to driving to and from work. Not a day goes by that people don't stop and stare or ask questions about it. You truly feel like "king of the road". I would buy another M3 tomorrow.
