BMW M5 (2010 and older) Sports

BMW M5 (2010 and older) Sports

DESCRIPTION

Pros:

  • Powerful 500 hp 5.0-liter V10 engine
  • 0 - 60 mph in 4.5 seconds
  • Comfortable and supportive front seats
  • Optimum blend of supercar power and everyday convenience of a 4-door sedan
Cons:
  • Excessive technology takes away the visceral experience
  • Cannot disable stability control
Ruling: The BMW M5 emphasis is on performance, but it's luxurious cabin and long list of convenience features also makes for a very practical sedan.

The BMW M5 is powered by a hand-built 500-hp 5.0-liter V10,which can be mated to a 7-speed Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) with steering wheel paddles or a 6-speed manual transmission. M-specific suspension and steering help keep all that power under control, while four cross-drilled anti-lock disc brakes provide the stopping. The M5 also features the M Drive button on the steering wheel, allowing the driver to set and save their favorite vehicle settings and access the extra 100-hp when in M mode.

Strength:

Power, Braking, Handling, Luxury, Stealth. Need I continue?

Weakness:

Poor fuel mileage (approx 14 mpg), weak clutch (replaced after 14k miles), consumes lot of oil during the first 10k miles and it understeers a lot at the limit. Other than that, it is near perfect.

It is the ultimate performance 4-door sedan on the planet!!

Strength:

Luxury, Eats miles, Sporty feeling for a huge car like that, immediate throttle response, power

Weakness:

Rearwheel drive can't handle the power, oil consumption really high at 1litre every 1000km (600miles).

Alright, I bought that M5 from my brother, who had it there in his used car lot and as I just needed a new everyday car I just bought it. This car is absolutely great, so much power, looks good, is spacious, quiet even at high speeds, and the BMW professional sound system sounds so good, I even wait if I am at home, until the played song finds its end. The engine noise is V8ish sounds big, just as big as the engine is (for european standards it is huge). While travelling (cruising) the engine is not noticeable, while accellerating it sounds so good. Cool mix.
But: The rearwheeldrive cannot cope the power. There is huge wheelspin all the time you press that throttle just a very bit too hard. On wet roads, don't even think of full accelleration even in third or fourth gear. Traction Control and Stability Program are so often needed even sometimes the ASC called system cuts in very early. It underpresses every inch of fun. And: The car is far too heavy for its size. I think it is time, to start building such cars with a little smaller engine, but with less weight either, and out comes a brilliant sports sedan. Compared to my previous Audi S4 I would trade it in all the time and go for the Audi. Torque of the two turbos and traction of the 4wd system lets you full throttle in all gears, even on very wet roads, and even in bends. Much more safe. So, RS4 is the logical step. Don't get me wrong, the M5 is a fantastic car, but even on top of the range, there are always things to do better. So BMW install a 4wd in such a powerful car, reduce the weight a little, and this is the perfect mix of sports and sedan. Out of 100points it still gets 92 or 93. Means brilliant!

Strength:

Styling is so sophisticated yet power and handling is that of a sports coupe. Rocket like response and can outrun most couped up coupes at the luxury you expect from BMW. Like they say in the magazines, "It's a sportcar in disguise!!". I love this car.

Weakness:

Being 26 and getting stares from many people wondering how a guy my age has a bad ass car like this!! heehee

I paid 80,000 for this car and I would tell you, "Do not test drive this car!!". You will end up dreaming about it day and night and won't be satisfied until you have one parked in your garage. Get it though if it won't put a dent in your finances!!!

Strength:

strong, smooth engine. hand stitched leather. TIGHT handling. classic shape.

Weakness:

just a couple: the brakes on this body style have been notoriously bad. get 'em right; 3 months later they shimmy again. and the front/rear americanized crash bumpers look like front/back porches (that is not 'porsches').

the category here didn't say what year to submit reviews on, exactly, so here's one on the original M5. we got this '88 in '95 for $14,500. not bad for a car in beautiful shape that sold for $57,000 new. think of the cars you know that cost that then. great deal for what we paid, even though, yes, repairs are pricey. but then, after maybe putting $5K into it over several years (mostly brakes), we still have spent less than, say, a new accord. this is no accord. with 205,000 miles, it runs like a champ. engine is like a (huge) sewing machine. and yes, the original also uses oil, and is designed to. the engine sound is great. (so is the stereo, although it does, rarely, crack like lightning and thunder are blasting through once every month or so, for one second, just to keep you alert i guess.) cornering and steering can't be beat easily. the ULTIMATE ultimate driving machine. i am sorry to say that we use it as a daily commuter mostly, with a child seat, yet! with 70mph speed limits, it is not practical to give it a thorough workout often, so we resort to 80 mph on 35 mph on-ramps, etc, for kicks. it is very stable at 135 on the freeway. overall, a classic, potent, kick-ass, good value of a used car if you can find a clean, well maintained one.

better than all other cars ever driven.
The police don't even pull me over even if I am going 10 to 15 milesw per hour over the speed limit.

Weakness:

Insurance is very high for a seventeen year old like me.

I paid 73,000 dollars for it and it is worth every penny.

Strength:

Engine, suspension, looks, comfortable interior, and I gotta love those butt warmers!

Weakness:

loves oil!

This thing is built like a fine watch! There is no feeling like flying down a hilly country road in this thing. The throws are short and the clutch is easy. Furthermore, the engine is well mated to the manual. What can I say? It's an m5!

This car is gorgeous! I LOVE the exterior red/interior black leather supplemented by titanium accents configuration, but I wouldn't doubt that this car would look great in any configurations. The electronics are pretty much flawless as of yet, but I'm expecting something to go wrong soon (bmw's are not known for excellence in their electrical systems). I can't really say that the GPS interface is efficient. Lexus' touch screen is far superior to BMW's awkward knob. Like my friend comments of his 2k 740iL, "It can take me a restauraunt a mile away very easily, it just takes about 10 minutes to program".

Keep in mind that you're prospecting the purchase of a SPORTS CAR. I've never actually driven this thing in winter, but I suppose the AST/C and DSC would help a lot.

Strength:

Power, Technology, Space (Sedan)

Weakness:

Sport handling, Quality, Oil consumption

I was attracted by the combination of power and space: i.e. driving a sportscar on the track and able to take out the family on the weekend. Had to realize that the M5 is very much a sedan and not a sportscar (more a muscle car).
Build-quality is average: problems with the electronic toys /interieur noise on the front. Qil consumption is high although it was stated that after 7k miles consumption will reduce - it is not the case.

If you need a real four-seater go for Audi S6 which offers more value (quattro and quality) for the price. If four-seating is an option, the 911 or Maserati GT3200 are the choices.
Anyhow, I think it remains a myth that sport and space can be combined.
