Porsche 968 (1995 and older) Sports

Porsche 968 (1995 and older) Sports

DESCRIPTION

The 968 is available with a 3.0L, 4 cylinder with 236 hp. 4 wheel ABS is standard and options include automatic or manual transmission.

The Porsche 968 was sold from 1992 to 1995, and marketed as the replacement for the Porsche 944. When production ceased in 1995, it represented the end of a line started almost 20 years earlier with the introduction of the Porsche 924.

The 968's styling somewhat resembled the 928 although it looks considerably more like a blend of the 993 911, which did not appear until the end of the 968's production and a 944 S2. Like the 944, the 968 was sold as both a coupe and a convertible. Much of the 968's chassis was carried over from the 944S2, which in itself shared many components with the 944 Turbo (internally numbered 951). Borrowed components include the Brembo-sourced 4-piston brake calipers on all four wheels, aluminum semi-trailing arms and aluminum front A-arms, used in a MacPherson strut arrangement. The galvanized steel Unibody structure was also very similar to that of the previous models.

Over the 4 years of production, only a little over 12,000 cars were sold worldwide, with less than 5,000 shipped to the North American continent.

Strength:

Without question, the best handling Porsche built. These are high quality cars that, with proper maintenance, will deliver very reliable performance. I find fuel consumption to be more than adequate given the cars performance. For the price, I don''t think there is anything else available in the market place that offers the combination of performance, comfort, safety, reliability, and pure pleasure. The quality of fit and finish is superior, mine looks as if it came off the showroom floor yesterday.

Weakness:

Replacement part cost is high. Engine overhaul has the potential to be very expensive. Some have experienced drive pinion failures, very costly to repair. I''ve heard people complain that the cost of routine maintenance is expensive and therefore a weakness. People who buy high performance cars and expect to do no more routine maintenance than you would for a Toyota Camery probably should own a Toyota instead. It has been my experience that high performance machinery typically requires a higher degree of maintenance, but that is not a weakness.

The 968 is one of, if not the rarest production Porsches made. I am constantly asked if I want to sell the car. I have the car maintained by an independent shop that specializes in water cooled Porsches. I have had no significant mechanical failures and the car is my daily driver. My mechanic says that based on his experience with the 944 series cars I can expect to go 250,000 to 300,000 miles with no major engine work as long as I keep the car well maintained. Buy one if you can find one, they become harder to find as time goes on.

Strength:

Power, panache, exclusivity, handling, room for my tennis racquets, and a couple of coolers, top down screamer. A great triple black. This is a keeper. Too bad Porsche didn''t continue this one - but not bad for the owners.

Weakness:

Maintenance cost, the rear boot cover never stays on ( I leave it off),the door taches sometimes get stuck with the cables stretching.

I''ve owned muscle cars and luxury cars, but nothing compares to this porsche. I bought it with only 15000 miles on it 2 years old. It has the looks to kill for, speed , handling and with good care pretty trouble free. It is a head turner, and very exclusive. I bought it because it was a classic the day it left the manufacturer. The elegance of the 968, the power to beat a boxter out of its box, and many 911''s- chips for me! the 911 heritage the racing seats, great brakes, and average gas mileage. It is very stable at higher speeds.

Ladies love it, guys player hate me, Valets always want to park it, STYLE, speed, the joy of driving a machine built for performance, and the rarity of this model are the biggest pluses to me.

Weakness:

Gas milage is moderate to bad. The cars biggest weakness is actually the drivers, I''m scared to death of an early timing belt failure.

I was Perfectly happy with my 1986 944, but when I saw THIS ride, I had to have it..... Only 23,656 miles on the odometer, and this thing SCREAMS. The BEST sports car I have ever driven, it will be the LAST sports car I will ever buy (I am 29, so that says something!!) My love affair with Porsche began with a 924; a pretty tame car. I bought this for the cost of a new Saturn. What a deal. Anyone lookin for a cabriolet need only see mine to know the feeling of longing and utter contentment that only Porsche can bring. I have had this car for one week, and I baby it 99% of the time (I feel Porsche owners make themselves look unsophisticated dusting a trans-am or mustang, far too easy, so I just ride, chill, and let the white trash get the bad gas milage, beat up tires, etc.)

Exclusive!!! No more than 2400 coupes in the whole U.S!!! Sometimes people ask if it's a FAKE porsche!!! Anyways, it's fast and might be the most practical Porsche ever!! I can fit in 3 set's of Golf clubs or 2 mountain bikes in the truck!!!! No kidding!!!

Weakness:

Once in a while small problems came up!! Like clutch, squealling brakes, alternator........ but still worth it!!

Get one if you can!!! It is so rare that even Ferrari and Lotus owner came up and ask if I want to sell it!!! Handling is pure!!! no traction control, so it's pure skill!! It might be a disadvantage to most people, but if you're into racing, you'll know!!

As fast as my friend's 95' M3!!! May look a little older, but Hey!! It's a PORSCHE!!!!

Strength:

This car's a real looker! Wherever I go with it, heads turn. My 6-speed model came with the 17" wheels, sport bucket seats and color-matched rear spoiler. The handling is superb and the communicative steering and shifter feel are second to none. Performance modifications on my car have brought up the horsepower to @ 260hp.The excellent power-to-weight ratio has helped me leave many an M3 and 5.0 Litre fading in my rear-view mirror. As satisfying a ride as any high end sports car.

Weakness:

Although there's little to dislike, I'd have to say the maintenance costs and fuel economy are real wallet killers. Also, I've noticed the air conditioning system has trouble keeping up on real scorching hot days.

I bought mine for $32,000CAN (that's about $21,000US) which included a 3 year after market warranty. This car is great for anyone who wants to step into the lap of luxury but doesn't want to pay the price for it. I would definitely recommend this car as it offers unbelievable value for the dollar. Porsche 968's that are in pristine condition hold their value well and as more enthusiasts realize what a great deal these cars are, the market value will be even more solidified.

If you compare this model with cars in its price range (ie: 328is, older M3's, RX7), there's no question that this car is the king of the hill. If you want another 6 speed, 240 hp car with the fit & finish quality of this model, shell out another $20K on top of what you'd pay for this car.

Strength:

This is my first Porsche I have ever owned. I have driven 911s before. I really like the 968's unique "looks" compared with the other sports that are out there. The engine is smooth with a lot of punch.

Weakness:

Make sure you change the timing belt! I had the timing belt break six months into ownership that also forced me into a valve job. $3,100 later I find myself still lured by the car's beauty and grace.

I paid $19,900 for a metallic blue loaded model with 17" rims. I still recommend the car to my friends when they ask where they can get one. Quite a few people are having a hard time distinguishing the car to the Porsche Boxster. People can't figure out what car it is. That's exactly why I love the car. With only 2,000 cabriolet's shipped to the US to enjoy, the 968 really put's the owner into an enviable position.

It is the the most fun I have ever had in a car. Great power, handles wonderfully, good brakes and I can actully go to the beach with two folding chairs and drinks. Everyone loves taking curves in this, it comes right back to you. Good gas mileage too (in the 6 speed).

Weakness:

Hint: Find a great Porsche mechanic and you'll love this car. Anyone buying a Porsche should expect to spend money to maintain it "properly". With the top up you really got to use your mirrors to see around you. Would not recommand to someone who'll drive it long distances regularly. If you have back problems forget it, unless you have help getting out, this car is low to the ground. This car is not for everyone.

I shopped around for this car for awhile. Finally, I found the color, condition and mechanicly sound car I was looking for at about $16,000. I look forward to making my payments and would have paid more for it if necessary. That's a first for me. I'm a real estate agent in my mid 20's, single and use this car almost daily with no problems. Perfect Weekend car!

This porsche is much more fun than the '90 Convertiable Corvette I drove. The 968 really moves like you want it to. But like in any convertable, it gets a little loud with speed.

Strength:

Although I haven't driven many other Porsches since I sold my 911 in 1975, this is the most "streetable" car of its type I know of. It has PLENTY of power, especially with the performance chip, and is quite tractable at any engine speed about 2,000. The 968 Cab also has much more storage/luggage space than any other Porsche I know of, and is a delight to drive with the top down.

Weakness:

Timing belt replacement at 65,000 miles (probably should be done sooner, and with a water pump also) is a very expensive "maintenance" job.... roughly $1,300 in NC

I love the car, and paid $21,000 for it in August of 1999, about $3,000 less than the next cheapest one for sale at the time. This more than covered the shipping from CA to NC, the new tires, the timing belt replacement, and the NC use tax. I'm considering buying a newer one to keep "forever", if I can find one in good shape priced reasonably.
I'm a 57 year old, recently separated, "young man", and generally drive pretty conservatively, but this one will keep up with the kids in the 5.0 Mustangs when they want to play from a stoplight. It's quite well balanced, and has none of the "ass-first" handling some rear engined Porsches are notorious for.
