Toyota MR2 Sports

DESCRIPTION

The Toyota MR2 is a mid engined, rear-wheel drive, 2-seater sports car manufactured by Toyota Motors Corporation of Japan. Mark I, II and III are the three commonly known generations of MR2. The Mark I or the first generation is produced from 1985 to 1989. It uses two types of engine such as the normally aspirated version manufactured from 1985-1989 and the supercharged version produced from 1985-1989.

Produced from 1990-1995 and extended until 1999 for Japan and other countries is the second generation MR2 or the Mark II. It comes equipped with two engine versions, the normally aspirated manufactured from 1990-1995 and the turbocharged produced from 1990-1995. The third generation or Mark III commonly known as the MR2 Spyder is considered as the first convertible model. It is produced from 2000 with its normally aspirated and turbocharged engine version. Its classic creation is better known to be boosted by MR2 Toyota Parts. Fit, precise, and top-quality are the distinct characteristics of these parts.

Handling, looks, asthetics

Hands down one of the most rewarding cars to drive ever. Takes a corner with very little hesitation. The turbo model has room for plenty of upgrades. Up to 500 horsepower is possible with this engine. Although my car leaks oil from previous owners' lack of maintence I still love it. The only downfall is that this car is meant for the summer. In rainy weather it doesn't feel as confident. Despite all this I believe it is one of the only cars in which you can get the most bang for your buck.

Strength:

Incredible performance for the money, seats (fantastically comfortable for a car of this nature), reliability, engineering, fuel economy (about 30MPG if you're careful), looks, T-TOP (Great in Summer), the list goes on......

Weakness:

Thi is not a family car, practicality is not why it was designed (but luggage room is actually pretty good for a small sportster), can be easily unbalanced on corners. Occasional radiator leaks, be careful when buying second hand, check the vehicle over thoroughly.

It is incredible, whilst reading owners reviews, how unbeleivably enthusiastic they are about about the Toyota MR2. I think that, alone, speaks volumes about this great vehicle. In my opinion, the phrase 'bang for buck' was coined specifically for the MR2 Turbo. The incredible performance (240 BHP in my car) for the cash must leave a very foul taste in the mouth of others who have bought sports cars several multiples of the price, who are left standing at every set of traffic lights! The MR2 Turbo is certainly a car that demands respect, or it will hurt you. But, learn the knack of the mid-engined, rear wheel drive dynamics and the car will make you smile from ear to ear, even whilst looking at it on the driveway! The Toyota engineering is as always superb, and you really feel that everything was designed with purpose, not pretence. The driving position is absolutely wonderful, long distances as well as short journeys. On top of all this, the car still looks good, even compared to the pick of todays 'real' 2 seater thourough-breads (go home Mazda MX-5!). Cornering is, however, a bit of a mixed bag. The front end is very light and sharp due to the lack of engine weight, and this encourages you to carry more speed into the corners, which is fine as long as you remember the it is rear drive and all the weight of this car is behind you, so excercise caution, especially in any adverse weather. In short, if in doubt ease the throttle, and you should find the extra traction that you need (very different from more forgiving front engined, front wheel drive cars). As a summary, the MR2 Turbo is a fantastically capable sports car that can challenge the driver, be an easy run about, a comfortable motorway cruiser or a back road scorcher, whilst always being good fun. Buy one, you won't be sorry.

Beautiful, precise, powerful, good car to build for even more power. TURO BOOST!

Weakness:

Are you serious? Why do you think this is top of the chart baby?

Great car to drive. I've owned both a N/A and also later a Turbo, and both cars are great to drive. Love to take off the tops on a nice day and just drive. Also it's a very unique car that you don't see on the road much do to the fact it's truly a car only the enthusiest knows about. The turbo isn't any ordinary turbo, very unlike a Audi TT that shares practically all engine components with 10 other VW and Audi cars with slight modifications. I personally consider it a poor mans 911T. Plus with the right mods you can make it that fast :-)

Strength:

Incredible handling and balance. Good looks... no one believes it's over 13 years old. Excellent ergonomics and just flat-out fun to drive. Good fuel economy if not driven aggressively. Comfortable on short trips, as well as the longer hauls.

Weakness:

Obviously, no rear-wheel drive vehicle excels in inclement weather and the MR2 is no exception. The weight of the engine over the rear tires helps somewhat, but this is no snow-worthy car. Care should be exercised in rain and snow.

The car never got the respect and attention it richly deserved until after its five-year North American production run was over. Now, few cars inspire such loyalty. The mid-engine, rear-wheel drive design, coupled with the truly awesome 3S-GTE 2.0L engine and turbocharger, yields a car that's quick, nimble and exceptionally fun to drive. I have the JDM engine in mine (a few more HP and a ceramic-coated turbine in the turbocharger) and a couple of basic mods (hi-power exhaust and a good turbo boost controller). With only a minimum of modifying, my MR2 turns out about 250 HP and has breathtaking acceleration when pushed only a little. It also has aftermarket wheels (16x7.5) and tires (225/40VR16) on it, which helps a lot. Toyota inexplicably built this car with 14" wheels in 1991 and 1992, moving to a more reasonable 15" in 1993. My car gets a lot of attention because of its sleek, stylish looks (crimson red with T-tops) and relative rarity. The aftermarket for this car is strong and the owners are a breed apart.

I have had trans am, corvetts, honda civics, and many other cars but nothing compares to this car. It handles like a dream and the power band is amazing. As far as upgrades it is endless mine is well over 300 hp. oversided intercooler T3/T4 hybrid turbo top and bottom end engine work. I honestly go on and on about the mods this cars has.

Everything.

Weakness:

For some reason, Toyota didn't put a protective clear coat on the flat-colered MR2's, only the metalic finishes have clear coat, so the paint fades easily...especially the front bumper and the rear spoiler. Also, as can be expected with a mid-engine, the rear end slides right out while taking a turnin wet-weather. Be careful!

Without a doubt, this is the best car I have ever driven and probably ever own. It is faster than anything, out of this world handling, and is very rare. Mine is a Turbo T-Top, black on black leather fully loaded. It only had 33,000 miles on it!!! It is absolutely mint, I picked it up for $6500 bucks from an older man who was the original owner. He had no idea what he had!!! Unfortuneatly, I am forced to sell because I am moving upstate NY and it wouldnt be too practical. This car is a true classic. It not only turns heads, but the enthusiasts go wild over it! I considered modifying it, although I thoughth that it would ruin the value of it. It's dead stock, which I found was more than enough to put every Honda/Acura I went up against in their place (along with a few muscle cars, too!) Not only am I very happy with how this car served me, I bought it for $6,500 and just sold it for $11,000!

Weakness:

A pillar blind spots, battery a pain in the *** to get to.

One of the greatest cars ever made. I have owned my "91 for five years now, it has 171k miles. Never done any more work than a water pump and new struts. Very comfy on trips. Best A/C I have ever seen. Handles like a dream, great brakes steering response, etc. A perfect sports car.

Strength:

Fast, stylish, attention getter, great on gas mileage, great price, easy to put the top down, smooth and easy shifting

Weakness:

Loud cabin, absoutely no trunk space (but that's not why you buy this car), tough to drive in the grooves from tractor trailors worn into the highways b/c of the narrow wheel width, huge blind spots with top up, cannot drive over 60mph in rain and forget about the snow

Despite the fact that I am in love with this car, I unfortunately happened to buy a cursed one. In it's short life, I have run over a high curb which dented the radiator leaving me with no coolant causing my engine to seize while driving on the Saw Mill (very tight, winding road with no shoulder or street lights). But don't let me leave out that five minutes before the engine seized, I accidentally (!!!) hit a huge raccoon at about 65 mph. Fast-forward to two months later, I have a new front end and a new short block engine. The car should be good as new. Well... Westchester Toyota (horrible service center, by the way) never did a rear wheel alignment after they replaced the engine (the entire wheel chassis must be removed to do any engine work) so my tires were completely bald on the outside due to uneven wear. So I had tires replaced. A few months later, driving down another dark road at 3am, I hit a deer, and not a baby deer, but a full-grown deer. One perk about this car being so low to the ground, I took out the deer's legs and it literally bounced right over the car. There was no damage to my windshield or my roof. Again, I have the front end replaced. Now I'm faced with rear tires that are still wearing unevenly and a mysterious oil leak that no one can find the source of. In short, this little car has put up with a lot of abuse and while I have to get rid of it as soon as possible for fear of losing my life and the threat of hitting another poor defenseless animal, I'm really, really going to miss this car. She, I call her Rosie short for Rosalita, is so fun to drive. People always ask me about the car. They have no idea what it is after they realize that it isn't a Porsche Boxster. People shout to me from their cars at 70mph saying how hot the car looks. The car has protected me from the elements and major run-ins with large animals. I may just cry when I hand over the keys. If I could only say one thing about this car, it would be: Buy this for weekend fun in the sun because it's a great deal but do not expect to use all year long in Northeast-type climate.
