It comes equipped with two engine versions, the normally aspirated manufactured from 1990-1995 and the turbocharged produced from 1990-1995. The third generation or Mark III commonly known as the MR2 Spyder is considered as the first convertible model. It is produced from 2000 with its normally aspirated and turbocharged engine version. Model Reviewed: / MR2 Turbo

Strength:

Even in stock form the handling is incredible. The harder you push the car, the more it rewards you. It's light and nimble, and throttle/turbo lag is almost non-existent.

Weakness:

The only major weakness of the car is that in 91 it came equipped with 14" wheels, and in 93 with 15" wheels. A larger diameter would have certainly improved 1/4 mile times as well as handling. There are other little things like the ashtray cracking, and that big dorky stock shift knob.

The MR2 is an outstanding performer. You won't find a better handling, accelerating, and flat out more-fun to drive car than this little toy.

Model Reviewed: Turbo and NA

Strength:

Awesome handling, plentiful power, great looks. Lots of aftermarket support for the Turbo model. T-tops are great for summer use, and store in vehicle for quick rain storm protection. Very rare car, great owners groups. Very reliable car, can go 250k + if well cared for.

Weakness:

T-tops leak a bit. Hood prop rod breaks a lot, ashtray cracks easily. Stock shifter is a joke, an upgrade to a '93 spec is a must. Electrical system is not the most fun to troubleshoot, in fact the car is somewhat difficult to work on with the mid-engine layout. Many mechanics won't work on MR2s for lack of knowledge. I suggest that you be mechanically inclined if you purchase one. AFtermarket parts are very expensive and nowhere near as easy to find as Honduh. (But who cares ;))?

I was seeking an economical car for commuting and running errands for my job. My main requirements were 20+ mpg, quick and sporty, rear wheel drive and a sunroof or targa top. I considered many other vehicles, and finally settled on the MR2 I had found because it had everything I was looking for. After owning it for a month, I was in love. No longer did I consider it an economy car. It was the quickest car I had ever owned, it handled like a dream, and it got a consistent 24 mpg city/ 30 mpg highway. After a month I decided I needed more power, so I started looking into turbo kits and upgrades. I finally decided it wasn't worth it to upgrade, since it was such a clean car and ran so well. So I bought a second one: This one a '91 Turbo. My wife is currently driving the '91 NA and loves it. I would suggest that anybody looking at a MR2 drive the turbo first, the NA second. Decide whether your main goal is performance or economy, and choose accordingly. The NA comes with a COMPLETELY different motor, and is missing a lot of upgrades that are not apparent to the first time buyer. A word of advice to lookers: find a '93+, it has MANY more features and is worth more to collectors.

Strength:

Engine, braking, styling, handling, resale value, engineering and overall Toyota quality.

Weakness:

Gearboxes on 91-92 cars can be notchy, 91-92 wheels are ugly, the engine could use another 50 HP, which is a trip to Home Depot away.

An seering mix of style and performance, quality and engineering individuality, no other cars looks like an MR2, and no other car drives like one. Racetrack-bred handling and braking, and a Yamaha-built engine putting out an understressed 200 HP are the big hitters in creating the feel of this modern sports car -and in a sports car, what is more important than feel? The engine whistling, shrieking, revving and singing just inches behind your head, it's sometimes easy to forget where you are and where you have to be -and isn't that point?

Strength:

Mid-Engine Design. Sharp Steering Response. Well built & dependable engine/transmission package. Comfortable interior. Ferrari-like styling. Many options available for comfort/pleasure while driving. Good power for its time.

Weakness:

Initial rear suspension design. Not enough tire and rim for the rest of the car. Price of car was at top end of the list of comparable cars. Limited production and import to the USA.

At time of initial production, the MKII was a fresh approach to a performance car. The initial road tests indicated that the car was sophisticated and grace & compentence. However the added weight and turbo lag make the car, in stock form, less nimble than a MKI. Also the tendency for the car to snap oversteer has been factored into the car's reputation. The great looking styling and normal road manners do make the weight and oversteer factors less important overall. Great Toyota dependability and reliability are part of this car. Bought car new, still enjoy it 11 years later.

Strength:

Bodacious bod, the original and best best "japanese ferrari" to ever hit the market. Reliable engine, solid Toyota build quality, corners like a race car.

Weakness:

Corners like a race car on the street. (Watchout! It's Snap-Oversteer!) It took Toyota until '94 to give us those cool taillights. Could benefit from street-friendly suspension tuning and about 20 more horsepower.

What are we talking about here? We're talking about an extremely well-balanced sports car. Responsive Steering, excellent handling, and a body that, 11+ years later, still looks modern. There is no denying that the MR2 Turbo is a great car. The 3SGTE is a race proven engine, and in this Yamaha - built engine is 200hp in stock form for the US models. Lively acceleration and T-tops for most models! While this car is not perfect, it is certainly a car every race-inspired auto enthusiast should cherish and drive. Although it is a mid-engined car like the NSX, it does not handle like the NSX. While cornering at the limit, this car is not forgiving, and will precipitate a fear worthy of soiling your pants if it is not respected. However, I find that on dry pavement, the car loses grip predictably when at the limit. This car should come with a warning label: "Spirited driving in the rain is not encouraged, as such activity may cause sudden flash of life or sudden lack thereof."

Strength:

- Great Handling - Mid engine - 2 seater - turbocharged

Weakness:

- no cup holder

I have driven WRX's, 300ZX's, and other sports cars, yet none is as captivating as the Toyota MR2. With the turbo-charged inline 4, it pumps out a healthy 200hp, and 200ftlbs of torque. The sound of the engine behind you is exhilirating when punching through the gears and gets the adrenaline pumping.

Strength:

looks, handling, realiability, rarity, ive been complimented by strangers constantly. For other mid-engine cars, you are looking at exotics such as Lotus, NSX,

Weakness:

None. I really love this car. If you require 4 seats...look elsewhere.

From the first time I saw the MR2 in 1984 I was hooked. I then drove the Supercharged MK1 model and I had to have one. By the time I saved enough money the '93 MKII was here and I purchased the Turbocharged model.

Strength:

Car is easily upgraded to 250 rear wheel horsepower, is very well balanced between handling, brakes, and acceleration, particularly the 93+ models. Great support from a VERY strong enthusiast community.

Weakness:

Somewhat weak aftermarket support, due to the relatively low volume, and the fact that the car was discontinued in the U.S. after the 1995 model year.

The MR2 Turbo is a well balanced sportscar with near supercar performance, right from the factory.

Strength:

Outstanding performance only comparable to cars costing tens of thousands of dollars more. It's looks and design are timeless.

Weakness:

Hard on rear tires due to the rear suspension geometry. This is so insignificant it's hardly worth noting.

I bougth this car specifically in January of 1993. It had everything I could ask for is a sports car, looks, performance and the legendary Toyota quality. After 10 years of babying the car is just as enjoyable now as it was the day I brought it home. It has barely lost any of its value and it now a relatively rare car. It was the best automotive buying decision I've ever made. I can't imagine ever getting rid of this car.
