Size for hauling stuff around-kids,dogs etc is great. Handles much smaller than it really is - peppy engine

Weakness:

After 5 years and just 50,000 miles everything other than the size is a weak point.

Everything was great until the warranty expired - in the last 24 months and 20,000 miles we have replaced two sets of brakes, 3 batteries, all electrical leads and connectors in the engine compartment, water pump, alternator (twice), a/c system including the compressor and fan, drivers door handle fell off, seat back controls broke off, knobs for a/c have been replaced three times, and just this week a completely new transmission. I figure we have spent $7000.00 on repairs since the warranty ended. Next time should I be crazy enough I would get some sort of extended warranty. But I'm not that crazy.

SIZE, AND VALUE. GREAT ENGINE POWER. EXCELLENT SPACE/CARGO. VERY SMOOTH RIDE. EXCELLENT HEATED SEATS.

Weakness:

BREAKS WEAR DOWN QUICKLY. MY ONLY MAJOR COMPLAINT, JUST HAPPPENED. MY FACTORY INSTALLED AC/DELCO BATTERY'S POSITIVE TERMINAL LEAKED ACID WHICH CORRODED MY BRAKE LINES, A/C LINES, ELECTRICAL WIRES, ENGINE COMPARTMENT METAL AND MORE. THE VEHICLE IS 28 MONTHS OLD AND HAS 48,000 MILES AND I'VE SERVICED IT VERY REGULARLY AND HAVE LOVED THE PERFORMANCE OTHERWISE. GM/ CHEVROLET WILL ONLY COVER 50% OF THE REPAIR COST BECAUSE OF THE MILEAGE. I'M TRYING TO DISPUTE THIS. MILEAGE HAD NO AFFECT ON THIS PROBLEM, A DEFECTIVE BATTERY CAUSED ALL OF THE PROBLEMS. MY 50% COST IS GOING TO RUN ME AT LEAST $600.00. I THINK THIS IS LUDICROUS! I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW IF ANYONE HAS EVER HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEMS. I'VE SPOKEN TO A FEW WHO HAVE SAID THAT GM INSTALLED DEFECTIVE BATTERIES FROM 1994-1998..... ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE ???

CHEVROLET CUSTOMER SERVICE HAS BEEN CORDIAL BUT UNWILLING TO ADMIT THAT THE AC/DELCO BATTERY IS DEFECTIVE. DUE TO THEIR LACK OF COOPERATION THEY MAY LOSE A GOOD CUSTOMER. GENERALLY THOUGH, IT HAS BEEN A GREAT VEHICLE.
UNFORTUNATELY MY EXPERIENCE IN THE LAST 16 YEARS IS THAT JAPANESE AUTO MAKERS ARE MUCH MORE CUSTOMER FRIENDLY AND CONCERNED ABOUT KEEPING CUSTOMERS.

COMFORTABLE FOR TRIPS AND TOWS A 6,000 LB BOAT WITH EASE. IS EASY FOR MY WIFE TO DRIVE AND MANEUVER.

Weakness:

32,000 MILES AND ON THE 4TH SET OF FRONT PADS AND SECOND SET OF ROTORS. DEALER ACKNOWLEDGES PROBLEM WITH BRAKES BUT STATES THERE IS NO FIX. 7.4 LITRE MOTOR NOISY WHEN STARTING BUT DEALER SAYS ITS NORMAL UNTIL IT WARMS UP. HARD TO KEEP ALIGNED FOR SOME REASON BUT DRIVES OK.

THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED AS A DEMO WITH 7,000 MILES. FIRST BRAKES GONE AT 12,000, SECOND AT 18,000, THIRD WITH 24,000 WITH ROTORS REPLACED. JUST PUT ANOTHER SET ON AT 32,000 AND HAD ROTORS TURNED. BEEN BACK TO DEALER 4 TIMES FOR BRAKE PROBLEMS. THE VEHICLE GETS HORRIBLE GAS MILEAGE BUT THAT CAN BE EXPECTED FOR THE SIZE, POWER AND COMFORT AND I CAN LIVE WITH THAT. WAS HOPING TO KEEP THE TRUCK FOR A LONG TIME BUT THE FORD EXCURSION IS LOOKING GOOD AS A REPLACEMENT.

Model Reviewed: /3/4 ton Suburban,Lt/autoride.tow pkg

Strength:

Ride quality, superb, extremely tight, no rattles yet, POWER with the Vortec 8100 is incredible. It is a monster and actually takes me back to the muscle car era. Steering radius is fantastic, try it, you won't believe you are driving a vehicle of this size. Even a Suburban of two years ago can't match it and in fact I can out-turn a friends 4 year old Tahoe. Air conditioning is great. Mileage acceptable for a vehicle this size, worst mileage so far,10.2, best so far 15.2 and this is with 410s. Just keep you foot out of it and it is acceptable The Hydro-formed frame gives this thing a ride quality that has to be experienced to appreciate. It will match any 1/2 ton rig out there and I have leaf springs and 70 pounds of air in the tires! No flex in this frame at all.I have a friend that just traded his 2 year old Tahoe for a 2001 just for the improvement in ride and the overall feeling of tightness.
If you haul lots of people and/or tow things, buy this thing. As a daily commuter, you are wasting gas but I think the size and gas costs are cheap insurance if you get hit by another vehicle. I work in the medical field and belive me, bigger is better and it all adds up to survivability. Let's face it, it's dangerous out there on the road
Nothing from Japan compares especially if you need a puller and if you pull, do yourself a favor and go for the 3/4 ton. You won't be sorry.

Weakness:

Vortec 8100 is noisy on start up and goes through a quart of oil in 2500 miles. Cheap, barely functional sub-woofer in the back. You would think that on the top of the line model they could put in a decent stereo but hey, GM keeps the aftermarket stereo business alive.
If the current price of gas is a problem for you, don't buy this vehicle.

I have always been a Chevy man and still have my first one, a 1959 El Camino.
I just got sick and tired of Chevy trannies blowing up on me. 4 trucks, 4 trannies and one blew twice. I am taking a big "leap of faith" going back to the Bowtie brand but the sophitication of the new Burb is light years ahead of the Fords and the new heavy duty tranny will hopefully provide good service. The turning radius is a definate plus when backing the travel trailer in and out of tight spots. I am hoping the Vortec 8100 out-pulls my Ford and will find out in June on my annual Yosemite trip.
Word to the wise,,,,,,,,,
No matter what you buy, if you are going to keep it, buy the extended warrenties. Here in Az. you can buy extended warrenties that refund all of the money you paid if you never file a claim.I did this on my Ford and the Burb. That is cheap insurance. And, the last time I paid for a new tranny, it was more than the extended warrenty was.

Similar Products Used:

1999 F-350 Ford Superduty,V-10, crew cab dually. The Ford is completely "unsophisticated" compared to the "burb". The ford rides like a tank and the brakes suck. Mileage is embarrassing. A/C in the Ford is slightly better than rolling windows down but not by much. Heater is not needed as the vents blow hot air all the time and you need to turn the system off in the summer. As usual the dealer is helpless to fix the problems. I bought the Ford as I was tired of replacing trannies in my Chevy trucks. So far the Ford tranny far exceeds anything Chevy has ever made. The Fords only saving grace is that it is a "puller" and hauls my 8,000 pound travel trailer with ease. Even with my 4-wheeler in the bed and towing my trailer I can maintain 45-55 MPH on all but the very steepest grades, even up the infamous Grapevine on Interstate 5 in Calif. And, you cannot overheat the beast. Ford has outdone themselves on the cooling system.

Strength:

Smooth, quiet ride, tight handling. Huge interior, plenty of legroom. I have trouble even getting into my wife's Saturn. Other drivers tend to steer clear. Power leather seats adjust to fit a variety of different body types -- and the warmers are appreciated during cold Minnesota winters. Handles beautifully in snow and rain. Sure, it costs an arm & leg to fill the tank but I knew that before I bought it.

Weakness:

Cheap look and feel of interior components. For what it costs, you would expect a bit more.

While it maneuvers admirably for a vehicle of its size, my 5' wife still feels a bit intimidated behind the wheel. She breaks into a sweat at the thought of parallel parking. Me? I have a lengthy daily commute and love this truck despite the poor gas mileage. If you have to sit in traffic for 1-2 hours a day, this is the vehicle to do it in.

Nice Design. Fits the whole family.

Weakness:

Problematic over the short time I've had it. Many "long" trips back to the dealer for small, but annoying repairs. Repairs have included rear-view mirror, second row seat mechnism replacement, and the latest is the "vibration" in the sterring colum between 7-35 MPH. The vibration is especially felt on turning. The sterring colum porblem is being repaired with a "part" being orderd by the dealership. I've been told that this vibration is being experienced on the Taho also. I am waiting for a copy of the report on this problem directly from GM. The dealer could not provide me with one.

I wish I would have waited! New generation vechicles sometimes don't have the "kinks" out of them. With the new developments this year in the tire industry, I can only hope that safety is not a concern with this "vibration" in the sterring colum of my Suburban.

A great driving vehicle and a real looker, lots of room for trips and camping, however this vehicle can nickle and dime you though if you are not on top of the maintanance, you must have a preventitive maintanave program that you stick to or get ready to pay big time.

Expensive to maintain,,yes;reliable: very.Would I buy another:yes.

Weakness:

Gm seems to be very poor in it's choice of accessory suppliers..alternators.water pumps..various widgets stuck on the engine.

I would recommend it without reservation to anyone towing. The 2500 is the best;the 1500 will tow a 34' Airstream(8200 dry weight) but just operates on the margin;for towing you need the 4.10 rear diff.
