Strength:

Great size; great ride; engine gets you there; buttons on steering wheels is fantastic; leather seats rock; running boards blend in well, unlike other boards; cooling system is better and rear air helps immensely; factory installed XM radio and onstar (I only have the XM option) are both great ideas;

Weakness:

Chevy apparantly doesn't know anything about electrical systems. My '96 went through 6 battaries and two alternators. Another friend's suburban had two alternators replaced. My '03 has had electrical problems including the horn shorting out (replaced twice), the theft deterrant system going out, and the radio presets getting screwed up by themselves. I'm afraid that I will have just as many battary issues with this one, as they have not gotten the clue that a truck pulling this much power needs a power plant that can fuel it. This is the absolute worst part of the truck.

The '03 is my second Tahoe. I had a '96. I love the design and ride so much, I can't see myself buying another vehicle. Unfortunately, however, things aren't perfect. The '96 had a bunch of extremely irritating issues. First, the AC vents in the center didn't even come close to moving in position to blow on the driver's face. The driver was left with the vent on the left only, and that kept me from cooling off as rapidly as I wanted to in hot Texas summers. The '03 has completely fixed this, as the vents go where you need them. There is also rear air that I use all the time even though I'm usually alone. It cools the truck faster. Also, the '96 had the trip odometer far to the left side of the console. Why, I have no idea, but the glare kept me from viewing it properly. The '03 has a single digital readout for information (not for gauges), and there is a bunch of useful information. But you have to cycle through it all -- you can't show the full odometer and the trip odometer at the same time. Other information you can cycle through includes gas milage, business and personal trip settings (you can use a business trip inside a personal trip and vice versa -- handy for my short business milage needs), properties to set alarm and lock issues (i.e. horn sounds, lights flash, etc.) and several other things. All this is accesable through buttons on the steering wheel -- once you get used to them, your eyes don't leave the road and your body stays put. That's great. I can change the radio and cds through the on wheel buttons, and I can mute the radio or change volume when desired. The controls aren't intuitive, however. For the radio, "Program" means cycle through the preset stations on one level (FM1, 2, AM), while on the CD side, it means cycle through the one of six (capacity) discs in there. "Select" means scanning through stations that aren't on the presets on the radio, but it means moving through tracks on the CD. In my view, program should move through the tracks and select should move change discs, but whatever. It may take you a while to get used to. The '03 has a smaller engine -- 327 (roughly) vs. the older (and in my view better) 350. However, the new engine is much smoother and while acceleration is about the same in spite of 35 more horsepower, I'm sure gas milage is better than the old. The suspension on both trucks is top rate, and the '03 trucks sit up the same whether they are two or four wheel drive. Both of mine have been 2wd, but you can't tell the difference. The running boards are mostly the same, but the Z71 package has running rails. 3rd row seating is an option now that I do have in my '03, but didn't have in the '96. I have taken the seats out and am waiting for the dealer to get the mat he promised to cover up the rails that show when you take the seat out. The drawback of the '03 is that there is MUCH (and I mean MUCH) less room in the back than in the '96. The '96 wore out brakes like crazy. My first set was put on at 27,000, but I didn't put another one on until about 70K. Then I had another set put on at about 100. All were factory. Also I had to do major work -- water pump, fuel pump, coolant nipple, and some other things at about 75K on the '96. And they went through 6 battaries in my 6.5 years of ownership. The '03 has a flip open back door while the '96 had two cargo doors. The flip open is much better.
