Strength:

It's cute.

Weakness:

Never-ending squeeking
Bumpy ride
Electrical system
Horrible gas mileage
Back Wipers
Back end would "jump" if I hit a bump in the road too hard.
May the lord save you if you need to turn fast.
Terrible breaking
Terrible time having problems fixed. "Sorry Ma'am we can't find the problem"
Terrible Service

I was so excited when I got my truck! Until the next day the dealer called to tell us that they "forgot" something on the contract. The monthly payment went up. Then they called again to tell us they "forgot something else" and the monthly payment went up AGAIN. By then I had driven the car less than a hundred miles and had virtually no gas left! I called the dealer and told them I wanted to bring this car back. They told me NO. Go figure huh?

Since then, we have had problems ranging from the wind noise, to the brakes, to the air bag lights coming on and off and most recently, the service group failed to tell us that they didnt replace the last air bag. This was truly the most horrific mistake I have ever made. I will never buy another FORD. Ever!

This is my third Explorer now. I've owned a '95, '97 and now have a '99. Between number 2 & 3 I drove a Nissan Maxima for two years. Had to get back to another SUV. Always had the EB pkg's - '99 has excellent accessorys/toys. Fully loaded- heated seats are great living in the midwest.

Weakness:

14 MPG city - UGH! But I had to have the V8 again. First Explorer was a V6 and was very underpowered. Gas mileage wasn't much better so it's worth the extra $$$ to be able to hit the gas and fly.
Irritated with a squeeking noise coming from under the hood when temp. is about 25-35 degrees. Garage claims they cannot fix it???? Rear wiper doesn't clear window properly. Premium sound sucks! Miss the Bose from the Maxima REALLY bad. Doesn't compare at all.

There is ALWAYS room for improvement, but overall I love it. Would recommend the V8 only. Don't waste your time or money on the V6. Learned the hard way.

Doesn't compare at all to the Jimmy/Blazer. Much more dependable/solid truck than GM product. Styling and over all quality is there. You do get what you pay for.

size, comfort, style, handling, cargo area, air conditioning in back, best air conditioning system in any car I have owned. Price for all the luxery items included.

Weakness:

re-calls, but at least they are excellent in notifying you and prompt in fixing the problem. Just the hassle of not having your vehicle for the day and having to drive the other vehicle. Love my Explorer.

I have 140,500 miles on my Ford Explorer and have had no problems. Have gone through 2 sets of tires, but to be expected for all the driving. Son plays ice hockey and fits all the gear and suitcases for the travelling that we do in Southern California and Las Vegas for tournaments and games. Getting ready to install a video entertainment center. Both my husband and I have both had other vehicles and they had their share of problems and my husband and I are not domestic car fans, always had foreign cars but our Ford is performing above our expectations. Overall I love my Ford Explorer.

This is my first experience with an American vehicle. I was a bit skeptical, but after talking to my mechanic and insurance agent and seeing where I'd get most bang for my buck, I went with the Explorer. For a non-Toyota or a non-Honda, it's actually been fairly reliable.

This SUV is definitely a truck, complete with a nice bouncy ride. I think that Ford has improved on the suspension since then because my buddy's 2001 Explorer Sport Trac's suspension is pretty tight and the 2002 redesigned Explorer has a newly designed suspension.

Anyway, the vehicle has treated me pretty well (I don't expect any vehicle to be perfect so I'm trying not to be too nit-picky... there's always going to be something that you don't like about your own vehicle).

There is, however, something that I cannot stand about this truck and I was wondering how many of you are experiencing the same thing. I bought the truck brand new July 1999 and a few months later started to get this annoying creaking/squeaking noise coming from the rear suspension area. It happens to me about 80% - 90% of the time. When I step in and out of the truck, it creaks. As I drive it, the natural bounciness of the truck creates a type of "squealing" noise. Do any of you have the same problems? If so, please e-mail me and let me know if you found some way to fix it. This is bugging me and I'm getting ready to unload the truck because of it. It's been to the dealer 3-4 times but to no avail.

Other than that, I like the acceleration, the spaciousness, the stock stereo's not that bad, etc. It's pretty easy to drive (I actually found it easier to drive than my 1992 Honda Civic!) and for a design that is a few years old, I actually still like the looks of it.

Anyway, I'm just curious if any of you had the same problem with your suspension.

Peace.

It is great to drive. I have the V-8 5 liter and when it goes it really goes. I live in the Colorado Rockies and I have never gotten stuck.

Weakness:

Transmission, electrical

I had a 95 Explorer Sport and it was a great vehicle. So when the lease
expired in 98, I got an 98 Explorer XLT. Immediately after the warranty ran out - it started having electrical problems. Then the automatic transmission went out at 48K miles and again at 60K miles. The brake line was put in backwards. And don't even get me started on the tires. I kept replacing them one at a time because they kept blowing out. I finally replaced all of them right before the recall.

Body Style, passanger seating and I Just Love this vehicle.

Weakness:

We have replace the brakes three times, replaced automatic 4 wheel drive with Warner Hubs, 2 Tires had been replaced prior to recall and after recall 5 tires replaced, back hatch door hydralic's broke, now transmission problem? when cold it dosen't want to go into second gear untill RPMs reach 4. even with these things the only problem with owning a Ford is if you have to deal with a dealer ship or the company thats where we have most of our problems. Service is not what it use to be and maybe thats not just a Ford problem but we pay alot for vehicles and you would think service would be priority.

Like I said I love my Explorer and my husband just called to let me know that I now need to have my transmission replaced or rebuilt I don't think he loves this vehicle. My husband works on his own truck its a 1973 Ford thats when you still could wrench on your vehicle not like these vehicles that are almost all computer.

DEPENDABLE!!!
Looks good.
Mileage is as advertized.
Good traction in mud and snow.

Weakness:

Windshield wiper switch is touchy.
Left rear door interior handle dosen't work.

The purchase of this Explorer was a real toss-up. I owned a 1977 Chevrolet Blazer that had given me exceptional service. I drove a friends Explorer and I was hooked!!

I have driven my Explorer coast-to-coast at least twice and the only real problem I encountered was a dead battery. I drove my Explorer for six years for $80.00 in parts.

This is one of the best SUV's I have ever owned. Obviously attention must be paid to the small things, regular maintenance, windshield wipers, tire pressure, oil changes, etc, etc.

I would rate my Explorer as outstanding in all aspects.

This vehicle is roomy, plenty of head room and leg room in the front and rear. I am able to transport just about anything in it with out having any problems. Easy to work on yourself doing the routing preventive maintenance. Very dependable vehicle, price is reasonable and did not get a stripped down version for the price I paid, it was fully loaded minus the automatic trans.

Weakness:

Gas Hog, but its expected from a SUV.

Over all I am totally happy with my Explorer. I have not had any problems with it at all. I most of all the maintenance on this vehicle and it runs like a charm and very easy to maintain. It looks good when washed/washed and dressed up. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a suv that is low maintenance and reliable.
