Strength:

Eddie Bauer model has the best appointments for the money. Plus the Ford is larger if you need to put lots in the back. New 6 has plenty of power. no need for an 8 unless you tow a lot of heavy loads. I can pull 2,000# of rock in my trailer with no problems.

Weakness:

Firestone tires :-(

The Eddie Bauer model runs around 30K. If you are looking for comfort and don't want to spend over 30K this is the best deal around

Strength:

lots of interior room
excellent visibility
acceptable power and handling

Weakness:

use of some really cheap parts (balljoints, tires)
awful and unpleasant dealings with dealer service . I have three problems in which nothing could be found but still continue even now that the warranty is run out.

This vehicle can do many things, but only satisfactorly. It is definitely a blend of a car and truck!
Not a power house for the amount of fuel it burns, but I did find there was enough power to move it along - empty! There is a substantial decrease in acceleration with 4 passengers.
The problems that did arise, brought me nothing but headaches, having to deal with poor dealership service in the area.

Strength:

Looks, feel, power, leather seating, great looks, GREAT LOOKS, I have been stopped over 10 times in the past 3 months by guys asking if thats the new Ford. My fourth Explorer('94,'96,98 &'01) and the best yet. P.S. the tires on all of the 2001 are not on the recall list. Never had a problem anyway.

Weakness:

Nothing I can think of. More miles to the gallon.

I would recommend the new model over all prior models, the best yet. Thanks FORD.

Depreciation on this car is horrible. Paid $30K two years ago and now is worth only $18K with only 35,000 miles! I'm stuck.

Paid Too Much For Too Little!

This is my third Explorer and I am looking forward to purchase a 2001 . All the one's I've owned have been very reliable. There is plenty of room, yet does'nt feel like a big SUV.

Strength:

Looked nice...

Weakness:

Rocks around too much, gas milage sucks!, engine computer broke once, wiper/signal broke twice, RPM problems, THIS IS NOT ANYTHING LIKE MY 1995 explorer.

It was over priced and I really hope any new explorer buyers look at the used section first because the older models really seem to be very different.

Quiet

Weakness:

I bought this used at 38K miles.

I came from an Acura to this Explorer. I had a truck, but sold it for the Acura because of long commutes. I can't comment on the longevity or reliability of this SUV yet, but for the time I've had it, it's absolutely wonderful. I don't do off-roading, so I'm not worried about clearance. The 302 is nice a smooth. Ford made a good choice in this v8, as it has a good track record. The AWD is just great. Corners like no truck I've been in.

Cargo galore. My sister recently bought a 2001 Pathfinder. I thought it rode better than the Ford, but I thought I would break something if I tried to pull or haul anything in the Pathfinder. Driving the Explorer, I would not hesitate to throw just about any load or situation at it. It just feels like it's ready for anything.

I also feel very confident driving it. The v8 could get me out of just about any potentially dangerous situation. It may sound silly, but with so many SUVs on the road, I kinda felt like a target in my little Acura. Now I feel like I'm a least a little better protected.

Overall a joy to have. Hopefully I will have the same experience as my friend. His Explorer just hit 130K miles and is still going.

Model Reviewed: Explorer Sport 4x4

Strength:

Sturdy, Sure footed, Styling(2door), versatile, smooth tranny and engine.

Weakness:

I have had three factory new Explorers since '95, in each model the rear window wiper quit working. Definately a design flaw! The 2001 rear window wiper lasted for 15,000 miles, scrawny tires on 4x4 version.
Gas mileage
Ground clearance
I don't care for the two-tone grey plastic on the bottom of vehicle. It would be nice to have the option of a monochromatic paint scheme. i.e all black. Grey area shows tar, dirt, and distracts from the line of the vehicle.
I had to spend $750 on Michelins to replace the deadly Firestones

$29,000 included every option save the moonroof. I would definately recommend this vehicle. If the Toyota 4Runner 4x4 similarly equipped was in this price range, I would opt for the Toyota. Ford has an overall good product in the Explorer Sport 4x4, good seats, sound system, you can even sleep in the back with the rear seats folded down! I feel safe and secure in this vehicle, you have room to move around inside.

Model Reviewed: Ford Explorer

Strength:

It has a comfortable, luxurious, well appointed interior, torquey reliable engine, great towing power, excellent cargo room. It's well suited to go out of town, to camp or down town. Great all weather capability. Oh and excellent c.d player

Weakness:

Sometimes you wish for more passing power. 4x4 hard to disengage sometimes.

I would definitely recommend it to other people! If they don't believe me I just tell them why do you think there are so many on the road?

Although this truck has been pretty reliable itself, it rides a bit rough and is bulky to drive. However it's torquey 351 ci engine is very powerful for snow pllowing and is excellent for towing 35 foot trailers or so. I like the Explorer for it's comfortable ride and all weather capability.
