Strength:

22 mpg in town, 25 mpg highway.
Great body styling & visability.
Interior well designed, no computer hidden in speedometer like 2004.

Weakness:

None!

Our 6th Explorer. We had 1997,1999,2001 & then a 2004, all EB's. The 2004 was a disappointment. Poor mileage, 4.6 v8; & very noisy. Sun roof echoed when open. At 30k miles it needed & new owner. We found a 2000 like new with 30k miles. It's wonderful, 25k mpg on the highway with a K&N. Now 65k miles & only had to replace the battery.

Strength:

Roomy enough for the family.

Weakness:

see above-transmission, electronics

We purchased this vehicle used with 24k miles. We now have to buy a new transmission. Apparently Ford mechanics are aware of the defective transmissions--we as consumers are left to discover this on our own after the warranty expires. Already replaced window motors.

Strength:

It smelled nice for a few days when I bought it and it was all downhill after that.

Weakness:

Just about every part on the car that can fail has. The main weakness is that Ford engineers are incompetent.

This is the worst SUV I have ever owned. Ford quality does not exist. I would avoid explorers at any cost, in fact any Ford for that matter. It was great the first 25k miles but after that things began to break on a regular basis. I have gone throught 5 ABS sensors, 1 full set of wheel bearings, remote control motor for mirror, 3 rear axle seals, a $500 sensor pack (a 10 cent part failed and it cost $500), heater motor solenoid for diverter door, 4 new rotors (no salt and they still say corrosion prevented turning them for a brake job) and most recently they claim the tranimission is ready to fail. This is crazy. It seems they are using bad parts to build them and bad parts to repair them. Even GM can do better than this. Let's hope they go out of business before they sell too many more cars to unsuspecting consumers.

Strength:

Comfortable, nice styling, good power, disc brakes on all wheels. Tire pressure monitor. Third row sitting, rear reverse sensing and much others, too much to mention. Love the new stibility control, really works nice!

Weakness:

Only problem I have had is with the power windows two of them stopped working at 2,500 miles, Ford fixed it with-in a two day period.

Overall its a nice SUV. I had a 2001 Pathfinder and my wife bought for 2004 the Explorer, I fell in love with and and after I fisnihed paying off the Pathfinder I immediatley went a bought the 2005 XLT. I saw the 2006 but I didn't like its size it is actually smaller, sits are also smaller, so I went with the 2005, plus Ford gave me a 3,000 discount if I got the 2005 model. My wife had problems with the reverse sticking, but Ford changed the transmission oil, recalibrated the tranny and it is working fine. My model year did not have that problem. I think since 2002 they fixed all the bugs on the 2005, it works fine and I have had any problems except for the windows which were fixed pretty fast.

spacious, powerful, smooth acceleration

Weakness:

sucks if the previous owner didnt take care of it! my first car was a 1979 Ford Fairmont, never even had to replace a part, probably had over 300k miles by the time I sold it.

We thought we got a good deal @ only 93,000 miles, leather interior, power everything, turns out when we brought the car to our mechanic, the dealer had drained the radiator fluid to hide the leak from the water pump. called the private dealer and he told my husband that we really should take care of the problem... wow. since then, we've been fighting off leaks from the water pump, radiator, hoses and even the transmission. since i purchased it, I have spent over $3000 replacing major parts and fixing leaks. Perhaps it is a result of the previous owner not taking care of the car, makes me jealous of my husband's itty bitty mitsubishi mirage that runs like a dream.

Strength:

Horse-power.
Dependability.
Reliability.
Overall toughness.

Weakness:

Poor attention to little details, like the gas pedal bracket, door lock problem (might be due to the crappy keys made by Germain Ford in Columbus, Ohio), etc.

Overall, it's been a great vehicle. Reliable, deptndable, strong-running, good horsepower out of the 4 Liter SOHC six cylinder engine. I've gotten a lot of "Check Engine" lights ever since I left Denver, Colorado, due to water in the gas I've bought in the Northeast and also in Wisconsin. I've only had problems with little things, like the screws that hold the gas pedal to the floor, one of the dashboard lights, the door lock for the driver's side door, etc. Bought it in July 2003 with 106K on it, and put 81K on it in just under 3 years. No engine problems, no tranny problems. I've investigated other American-built six-cylinder SUV's, and I think I'll just stick with Ford Explorers. Funny how lots of Explorers have sagging back-ends. I might spring for stronger shocks or springs on my next purchase.

Strength:

Nice handling, smooth ride. Fairly descent room. 3rd row seat is great for kids, and it has a great look. Good gas milage.

Weakness:

And to continue with the saga..... fixed rear axle problems, which took 3 times back to the shop to get it right, fixed 4x4 motor, then the ABS light comes on, have not gotten to it yet, but now the rear end is giving us the same problem as before. The problem is they fix them with the same parts that are faulty to begin with. There are numerous people with these same problems over and over. Also, I am just counting the days till the transmission goes out!!! That is another major problem with this year model. My suggestion is to read up on "common" problems on a vehicle before you buy it. Look for a model that has been around for a while with the same engine, frame used for years, they will be more likely to have all the bugs worked out. The problem with this one is they started using a new frame and different inner-workings. Now we are stuck, no one wants it as a trade in, therefore we would be upside down in anything we bought due to very low trade in value. Just please beware and do some research.

Bought the vehicle used 3 years ago. Bought extended warrenty, but never used it, BUT 200 miles after the warrenty expired, the 4x4 motor went out and the rear end had to be replaced. And so begins my saga!!!!

I have a 92 explorer. this year model was excellent. was built on the truck frame, which have been used for years. 200k plus miles and never a major problem. Original transmission, motor, etc....... It has been a wonderful SUV.

I love the vehicle for the way it rides. We have wanted one for a long time.

Weakness:

Dealers should pay more attention to problems with the vehicle before they sell them to the customer. It sure gives Ford Motor Co. A bad name. Thats why people go to foriegn Vehicles

Vehicle was the cleanest for the year(2002) that I have seen. The dealer assured me that the vehicle was inspected and ready to go. Two weeks of ownership and I have to replace the wheel bearings, and I have Sweaky brakes. Good inspection I would say?

Strength:

The Explorer has plenty of room. I loved the feel of the Explorer & was somewhat please with the gas mileage.

Weakness:

In 7/04 he ABS light came on & also found out both rear axle seals were leaking; spent $350.00. In 2/05 the air bag light came on, the 3rd row seat wouldn't raise back up & oil was leaking again from the rear axle; spent $350.00. In 6/05 Check engine light came on and the oil was leaking again from the rear axle; spent $267.00. In 12/05 the 4x4 went out; spent $800.00 to fix it. 6/06 my transmission went out at 86,000 miles; cost $1150.00. I did not fix it I traded it off and bought a new 2006 Freesyle with an extended warranty.

I've always bought used vehicles & I have NEVER had this much problems out of one particular vehicle than I did this 2002 Explorer. I bought it in December 03.

Similar Products Used:

I've always bought Ford products. I even wrote Ford Company for reimbursement of all my expenses because I feel like this particular vehicle was a lemon. They did nothing for me. I love the Explorer style, look, etc but with all my problems I had with this one, I was a little gun shy and bought something else.
