Strength:

Great Drive, comfortable highway, and great off road for my fishing trips. and good size for what I need. Good tower, so it has thetrailer package, a must if you are going to tow. Body and style are a-1 and it liiks good. All the bells and whistles the truck came with still work. Maybe I got a great deal, but after all I looked a lot.

Weakness:

Gas is ok, for what it is. Thae 4.3 has a great reputaion in these parts.

I have a few friends that have bought and driven Jimmys and Blazers for some time now. I got my 96 because it was close to the model year they had. It was owned by a co-worker who maintained the truck well. It has 225,000 km that is 135,000 miles. Doing my homework, I know the brakes, wheel bearings are weak, and these have been changed. I keep an eye on them. The truck also gets checks and the regular oil changes at proper intervals. I have always maintained my cars and trucks. The problem is picking up something used that you have no history on. I have asked many people who own then, and they seem to be happy about them.

Mechanical failures. Poor Gas Mileage. Cheap construction. Lousy ride and handling. And the list goes on and on

I stumbled on this site. Wow. Can't belive that ANYONE out there would honestly say that these buckets are good in ANY way. I owned one for years and got rid of it. It was just a horrible experience. Every Jimmy/Blazer owner I talked to (trust me you'll meet lots at your local mechanics) have the same tales of break downs and constant problems. Those posting positive reviews are either very lucky people, liars, or employed by GM. Every Mechanic I went to told me I was a fool to buy that truck, and they were right. These are simply 2nd grade vehicles. Stay away folks!!!!!

Strength:

Good looking, Heavy body, Great hauling vehicle, comfortable seating, I like the dashboard. I like the weather gizmo. I like that it checks out everything before you can go (like the seatbelts. doors, locks) etc.

Weakness:

Front passenger seat tends to roll back and forth (I have to get it fixed). Wind noise on the highway (I have to shut the windows... luckily I have A/C).

I find that the Jimmy is a good SUV. I live on a mountain so I can adjust to the terrain easily. When I drive on the highway it drives well. Everything works. The A/C is good. The power windows, locks, I really like the roomy back.

Strength:

amazing acceleration, smooth ride, good body condition

Weakness:

wind noise, check engine light always on...even w/ out problems, rear wiper fluid dosent work.

this truck was purchased and was driven by the family for about 5 years. there wasnt too many problems. that truck made it all the way through mountins during ice storms w/ 4 people a dof and a 150 pound sack on top of it. its a beast. by the time we got back home...it ws running pretty rich and the check engine soon light has been on ever since. now its my truck and it has 209,000 miles on it. and it still runs like a gem. my mother has a 2000 Jimmy, and my truck beats it in everything. handle, acceleration, its a tighter ride all around.this truck has been absolutely great. i was reareneded at a complete stop by some bozo going 60 miles an hour...and they lifted my truck up and went under it. and i drove away. all i had to do was get the frame straightened out and all was well. i also flew into a snowbank...but it made it through quite well. its still running like no tomorrow. its my baby. Bahama blue metallic...sheerly stunning. haha (i think anyway). the body roll many of you speak of is usually due to crappy shocks. you just need some stiffer suspension.

Strength:

4wd, comfort, secure feeling, acceleration, interior design.

Weakness:

Excessive body roll, gas mileage, front ball joints, transmission endurance.

We bought this used 3 1/2 years old. It was a pretty good vehicle. We liked the room in the back and it was comfortable and secure. The 4wd worked great and retained control in all conditions. However, it rode like a boat, it felt top-heavy and there was significant body roll around corners. Braking was also an experience as it tended to nose-dive, the rear brakes were adjusted properly according to our service dept. Gas mileage was dismal, but acceleration was good if you stomped it. It had plenty of pep at higher rpms. It was not the best vehicle for day-to-day driving. However it would make a wonderful forest ranger truck as it has adequate room, and low-end grunt for steep inclines and declines. The interior seemed put together well with more refined and solid materials used in their construction than on my '98 Sierra. We also endured the front ball-joint replacement common with these vehicles. The tranny was also starting to act up with 86,000 miles on it, and we never towed anything.

Nice looks, no major problems right now, 4WD system let me drive through some big mounds of snow that required a lot of people to do some serious digging around their vehicle (and this with open front and rear differentials!!!) last winter

Weakness:

Weak sound system, drinks gas more than I'd like,

Okay, I have not read ALL of these reviews, but I noticed there seems to be a fairly LARGE amount of people who say how terrible the GMC Jimmy is (or was, since they stopped that version of the model now). Anyhow, everyone says about how they keep having "PROBLEMS! PROBLEMS! PROBLEMS!" Now I am not trying to sound sarcastic here at all, so don't take it as that way, but I just don't get it. My uncle sold me my 1998 Jimmy for around $2000. The thing is, it already had 163, 262 miles!!!(yes I can remember the mileage number exactly, from when I first got it). It now is up to 165,000-some miles. Thing is, it basically runs flawlessly! Granted yeah, there are a few little problems, like the windshield wiper motor went, so that had to be replaced, and the rear wiper washer sprayer won't work. But other than that, the truck is totally quiet at idle, and runs perfectly. No bad engine noise, nothing wrong with ball joints or axles, or anything. 4WD system works perfectly. But with all that mileage!!! Maybe I just lucked out and got a Jimmy that holds together really well???? Or maybe random Jimmies are lemons and others run fine, I guess. I dunno. Just figured I'd post this though so that people know that not ALL the modern Jimmys (like 1995 and up) and pieces of crap. If you are in the market for one, you might be getting a really good deal. I guess just get some mechanical no-how of the Jimmy and have it looked over seriously. Or don't run the risk. But my Jimmy is proof that there are Jimmys out there with lots of mileage that run fine. In terms of overall rating, I'd definitely mark this vehicle as average; unless you plan on customizing your Jimmy (and there are so awesome customized Jimmys out there), buy a higher-quality vehicle. Too much cheap plastic in this thing. But it runs absolutely fine, which is fine by me considering the mileage; I plan to customize it big-time.

Engine accelerates well. Looks good. Long lasting brakes. Parts readily available including after market. My daughter thinks that she should drive it to high school (or is that a weakness?). She thinks that it would help her high school image! So it does possess some status!

Weakness:

Abysmal parts quality leading to frequent repairs. Consumers Reports says that they are mechanically challenged. Resale value is poor.

My late Father purchased a new 1998 GMC Jimmy SLE on December 30, 1997. I inherited the car in Sept. 2000 when it had 30,000 miles. We have used it to tow a light aluminum fishing boat. The MSRP was almost $30,000. Although an attractive vehicle it has had a few mechanical issues during its life (it now has 58,000 miles). Under warranty, it leaked oil (bad oil cooler), tilted (bad idler arm), the door stays would not hold the doors open, the seat fabric wore through (dealer replaced), had a noisy serpentine belt, and had two defective AC Delco batteries. Post warranty, the lower ball joints were replaced at 40,000 miles (I should have asked the dealer if they were covered). The oil cooler now seeps oil. The intake manifold slowly leaks coolant. A 4WD part died at 44,000 miles and cost $400 to replace. A stereo speaker vibrates badly. A CV joint failed and was replaced. The idler arm was replaced yet again at 56,000 miles. The seat recliner snapped off although vice scrips will work as a cheap substitute. The rear wiper control button on the dash fell out exposing some wires. They will require repairs even if an aggressive maintainance shedule is followed. Two coworkers have replaced automatic transmissions in their Jimmys at 80,000 miles each. I am saving my $ for that one! In sum, the engineering was fair, the workmanship was average at best, and parts quality was, and is, abysmal. AC Delco should be ashamed that it put its previously reputable name on so many of these parts! In sum, buy one of these at a huge discount compared to comparable Japanese competitors since it will continue to fall in value and will require more repairs. One caveat: My sister also purchased a NEW 1998 GMC Jimmy SLE that had the bad habit of shutting it self off at highway speeds. It would not restart and required a tow. This was dangerous! Three GMC dealers could not accurately diagnose and resolve the problem although they replaced the battery, fuel pump, and something else under warranty. She decided life was short enough anyway and traded it for a mechanically flawless 2001 Pathfinder. The Jimmy trade in value was minimal. Fortunately, my '98 Jimmy has not had that problem. On the bright side, the brakes are original with much wear remaining. It accelerates well. I just returned from a 2,100 mile road trip where it performed perfectly. I fully expect to keep this Jimmy for another 60,000 miles or more(I saw a 2001 Jimmy for sale recently with 111,000 miles so it is possible). Maybe I am a masochist but I purchased a new, leftover 2002 Chevrolet Blazer 15 months ago for $13,527 (about 53% of its MSRP). With that sized discount, how could I look at 4Runners and Pathfinders? My neighbors buy Civics for more than I paid for the Blazer (it has the usual good stuff including Automatic and 4WD which is useful for my ski trips). However, the Jimmy is better equipped. I know what I am buying and can live with the inevitable mechanical repairs. I may buy an extended warranty for the Blazer although I did not do so for the Jimmy. In sum, there is some risk in buying these Jimmys, Blazers, and Bravadas but if the price represents a significant discount, it could be a risk worth taking. Just plan on occasional repairs and the accompanying costs.

Smooth tranny, great looks, smooth shift into 4x4, nice power for having 72,000 miles, still puts out when I need it.

Weakness:

lower ball joints and idler arm every 20,000

Just bought this at 72,170 miles and it drives beautifully. I had it looked at before I bought it, and the machanic told me that the lower ball joints needed to be replaced and the idler arm too. He told me it was common on the Jimmy's, but when I priced the parts I would need to fix them, it came to not even $200. BUT, he also told me that they would go out about every 20,000 miles...which I wasn't ahppy about. But the vehical is smooth, the tranny is smooth and when I shift into 4x4, it's smooth. The interior is still good after 72,000 miles and has only a little rust on the underbody, which, of course, would be there being that it's used and 8 years old. The mechanice told me that he always wanted one of these, so I take it that this SUV can't be that bad of a vehical, but like I said, I've only had it for less than 1 month, so we'll see. I have no worries though!

man was I ever a sucker! To date, this is the most that I was willing to shell out for a vehicle. It was a stretch for my budget, but the dealer told me that it was a reliable suv....I beleived him, man was I ever burned. I've had this vehicle on the road for one year and it has had nothing but problems! new exhaust, cat. converter, coolant system, drive side front wheel bearing, alignment fixed twice and out bad again!!!!, have to have manual overide switch for interior lights activated at all times or the lights never turn off, drivers door hinges are shot(door droops badly when opened) new fuel injection system, ect, ect, .Worst investment I've made. Would not recommend this suv. I'm now in the process of trying to trade it in on another vehicle. It'll have to be towed to the dealership, because it doesn't start anymore(had this problem "fixed" two months ago) and God knows that I'm not putting another dime into fixing this hunk of crap.
