Strength:

Smoth ride
very soft steering weel
great interior space
good v-6 power on demand, speacially going up on mountain roads
nice acoustic from stereo
nice interior and exterior look
Very strong construction of all the car body
very quiet on the inside, not too aerodinimic noises
engine is very quiet for a v-6

Weakness:

too soft suspension, very easy to end on the roof!!!!!!!
Rust on the chasis
fuel consuming

This is a great car like a family car, it has a great interior space, it runs great for long rides, and it can take you anywhere(if you can find a gas station near by!!!!!!!), its very confortable on the inside and it has a very soft ride, but the softeness of the suspension system can get you in troubles when you reach curves at speeds over 45 to 50 mph. This hapenned to me the last december. I was driving back to my house and I step over some water, the car slept, and it went out the road, when I pulled the steering to get on the road again, the suspension started to oscillate, and I totally missed the car control. The car turned around and ended over the driver side, but thanks for the hard construction, it only got some scratches over the body work and the front glass broken for the preasure of the impact, But all the persons that were inside the car got out with no injuries. In conclusion, this is a great car, but you can't step on the gas, it will get you in troubles.

great ride. my college roommate had a 95', friends thought i was crazy when i told them that it rode better than a 4-runner, until they rode in it. excellent off road. my jeep and landcruiser buddies are always amazed when i follow them places off-road and still go farther.

Weakness:

gas mileage. I guess there is always one bad thing even with the best. also parts are so expensive! don't break often but when it does be ready!

other than the gas mileage and the high priced parts the trooper is a great vehicle. i just wish that performance products such as lifts, bumpers, lights, diff. lockers, ect.. were more easily available. i love stopping next to another suv and knowing i can go places they can't.

i have been in them all: landrover, montero, 4-runner, pathfinder; and i beleive the trooper does everything they do but better.

Strength:

It is pretty good for off roading, it crawls up any thing in compound low. Better gas mileage than most SUVs in it's class. Lots of room, I can go any where and camp out in the back where the back seat folds back into a comfortable bed. Lots of cargo space, and passenger space, I take all my friends every where. I have 94,000 miles on it, and it is pretty tough.

Weakness:

It is a 4 cyl, very under powered, it is an automatic which makes it worse. Fixing it is some times a pain, it is in need of a valve job. Not the greatest mileage, and it has pretty slow acceleration. It has no power going up hills except when off roading in 4 wheel drive. The transmission hangs down from the under side of the car, it is about 4 inches below every thing else under there, luckily it has a skid plate on it because i have gotten high centered a coulpe times.

It has been over all pretty good, I like the off roading capbilities, it is good as long as you dont go in real rough turrain, although the higher troopers are perfect for any thing. I'll proboly keep this one and do a valve job on it and give it a suspension lift of about 3 inches. If you are looking for a 4 wheel drive that can get in any where get a trooper from around 1995 with a 6 cyl engine and manual transmission.

Similar Products Used:

I have driven Jeeps and it is as good for off roading as a cherrokee, and not as unstable as a montero. It is lighter than a 4 runner or jeep so I can bounce it out of tough spots with enough friends. I have taken it every where my friends have gone with their new ford rangers.

I like this truck more every day I drive it. Controls and gauges well placed. Smooth shifting, tight steering, better than average brakes (4 wheel discs, impressive), practical designs. Best visibility of any SUV I've owned, especially front down-angle (I've owned a lot). Towing is OK for medium loads; around 3500 lb. Love the headlights. You turn them on and off when you decide to. The 6-disc changer, receiver, speakers are just fine. The overall build is solid. I like it though I haven't yet had it off road, where I understand it really shines. It seems much larger than its cousins because of its extra height.

Weakness:

Enigmas. Climate control but no inboard armrest. TOD but untinted windows. No map light. No ignition key light. Inadequate console "junk" storage. Gas mileage a welcome treat (after the 351 Bronco). The BIG rear door when being closed, seems to be abusing the little door. That's getting pretty picky compared with complaints of other SUV's.

I've owned 14 4WD vehicles since '70. So far this one ranks in the top two.I'll know in a year if the reliability nudges it ahead of the 4runner. It has it beat in space and giddyup. This review page helped me decide to buy a Trooper. Looking at the other vehicle reviews really makes me feel I made the right decision based on my needs.

Strength:

The best thing is the Trooper's offroad performance it surpasses most other vehicles of the same year. It looks boxy and older but nothing has really changed with the newer ones anyways. The ample cargo space is nice for larger groups on trail rides. I usually end up carrying the other extra supplies. The performance is good considering the age and model.
The top-heavyness of the Trooper isn't really that bad if you are experienced in suv's.

Weakness:

The only bad thing seems to be the aftermarket replacement parts for the vehicle. Head gasket went out at 161000 and with the money spent on that I desided to replace the valves while We were down there. The price was about $900 for that, $200 for front brakes, $130 for back brakes and $400 for AC work. It also moans really loud when appling brakes in reverse. Besides being costly to repair and the thiner metal it's a good ride.

Instead of summarizing the Trooper I am going to tell you some of the mods I have made on my Trooper. First I put a brush guard and fog lights on the front for better protection and visibility. Next I put A neon green light under the dash and added green interior lights. I then got the windows tinted to a basically legal 20% and added a stripe of mirror tent on the windshield. Next I removed the carpet in the back cargo area and sprayed bedliner for water proof protection. I also added 50 watt reverse lights for better visibility when backing up on and offroad. I the put nerf bars under the doors. I also plan to put the bedliner flooring in the entire vehicle for a cleaner appearance. I plan to continue my upgrades and mods and would love some feed back on other Troopers.

When comparing to a 91 Montero several things arise. One being the performance which is better in my Trooper. Next the body shape being alot better in the Trooper. When going around corners at faster speeds my Montero seems more top-heavy than my trooper. The acceleration is better in the manual Trooper versus the auto Montero. Overall the Trooper has more good points than the Montero.

Strength:

It is very tough. Gone through just about everything in the Trooper. It looks especially nice. My Trooper is metallic silver with chrome nerf bars and grill guard. This was the lowest priced SUV at the time I bought it and it has proved the best SUV buy of 1993. The 5 gear system allows me to pump up the engine and beat any vehicle in the line of traffic. The trooper is tall and I am able to see for miles. It has a lot of room as well, with I being 6'4". And, I love the Trooper over my loving wife... Just kidding.

Weakness:

None. Oh yah, in the summertime, there seems to be a little click-click noise in the door. It took me 6 visits for the dealership to fix it. The noise kind of provoked me.

It does everything for me. Once I took a visit to the Rio Grande River with my Trooper. The Rio Grande was kind of dry at the time. I rode along the edges of the river at a 45 degee angle. And boy was it fun. The Trooper handled great. The engine isn't the best, but I replaced it for the heck of it so that I would have the most powerful SUV. I owe a lot to my Trooper

{[Pathfinder], [Land Cruiser], [Grand Cherokee]} Vs. {[Trooper]} (All 1993) Land Cruiser and Grand Cherokee give smoother ride but does a tough truck need such a smooth ride when you go off-road? And for the smoother ride, it is 5 to 10 thousand dollars more. The pathfinder just is not as tough as the Trooper. Trooper goes fastest. Land Cruiser is not as good on offroad as Trooper. Grand Cherokee feels a little better on ice. And the Trooper looks the best. The Trooper overall, costing wise and dependability is the best. No doubt.

Horn buttons, cd player

I love this truck. I bought it with 97,000 miles on it and it acts like its brand new. Handles offroad wonderfully, as well as the highway.
I have ticked off several people by accidentally honking at them, because the horn buttons are too close to the rim of the steering wheel, and the cd player is hard to operate when in park (it gets blocked by the shifter). But It is Awesome on and off road. I feel like I have all the storage room and the toughness of a land rover without the hefty price tag or the insane maintenence bill.

Strength:

Roomy, comfortable, fairly powerful, nice look, great big sunroof

Weakness:

6 disc changer skips easily, few rattles that are hard to pin down, gas mileage is subpar

I have a Rodaro version, which adds aftermarket leather, carbon-fibre dash, etc. . ., which is nice, but not fun to have to deal with a seperate agency when something breaks.

I like the Trooper, over-all, and it's definitely worth the price (I got $8000 off msrp in early jan 2000 on a 99 model. . .gets you a new base model for about 18k!!)

The sound system is poor, with bare-bones cd functions (i.e. no repeat, random, etc. . .)

Arm rests are a must. (who builds a car with arm rests as an option?)

TOD is nice. Doesn't seem to affect gas mileage (though it only gets about 15 city/16 highway from my estimation)

I think you'll get better quality from a jeep, but for the price it's tough to beat.

Solid, well built SUV. Bought mine new in December '99 and haven't had any problems with it. Keep the oil, trans, and differential fluids changed and the Trooper should last a very long time.

Weakness:

I've found that my trans clicks loudly when downshifting into 1st gear. The service manager indicates that this is normal.

I would recommend the Trooper to anyone who wants a well built SUV and is planning to do any type of outdoor recreation such as fishing, hunting, camping, etc. You can't go wrong with the Trooper!
