Strength:

Smooth ride. Turbo on demand. Love the get up and go. I'm a safe but a little aggressive driver. This suv gets me where I'm going.

Weakness:

Gas Mileage. 17-18 city.

Love the ride! This is by far the smoothest riding vehicle I've owned. I love it for traveling and so much smoother that I ever imagined. I don't want to trade it in due to increase gas prices. But thought about it for a minute. This SUV is worth keeping even at the higher gas prices. I wish I could get a sunroof added and not have problems with leaking. Greatest car buy I've made

Strength:

Off road ability, room, comfort, boxy style...couldn't be cooler. Great vehicle

Weakness:

A little lacking in the power department, but pretty much about the same as any import in the early 90's

I wanted a toyota landcruiser but the cost was way too much. I started looking for a vehicle that had similar atributes for a lot cheaper...Along came the trooper. My father in law owned the same year and model as the one I purchased, he had driven his to Panama and back all along the cost of Mexico and back, FROM CANADA! Not one single problem with it. So I figured I couldn't go wrong. Since I've purchased my trooper I've been nothing but smiles, it drives great has more room that I could need and is great off road. I'm super psyched that the LS came with a limited slip diff. I dropped a nice set of BFGoodrich AT 31X10.5 and really enjoy taking it camping. It isn't the fastest vehicle but hey, life is about the journey... All in all I'm pretty happy with the buy. A bonus is the 2.8L V6, they're a dime a dozen for parts.

Strength:

Reliable, sturdy vehicle. Excellent value and warranty. Isuzu dealers really cater to their customers. Roomy, well designed interior and plenty of power to tow a camper or boat. Gas Mileage not bad (17 city, 21 highway).

Weakness:

Rides, drives like a truck, steering wheel seems larger than needed. Turning radius wide when compared to Pathfinder and 4 runner. Note that before carpal tunnel, I had no problems with this vehicle at all! Why did Isuzu stop making the Trooper?

Bought it new. I researched SUVs extensively before trading my 1998 Pathfinder and I wouldn't be thinking about trading it in except for severe carpal tunnel in both wrists. I have never had better service from a dealership or a more reliable vehicle. The Trooper drives and rides more like a truck, excellent design inside and out.

Everything about the vehicle

Weakness:

Absolutely none. You don't purchase a SUV for gas mileage. If that is your concern you need to look at a small compact sedan.

I first was introducted to the Isuzu Trooper neary 12 years ago when I started selling vehicles. I worked for an Isuzu Dealer at the time. I was even selling Isuzu's the year when Consumer Reports gave the Trooper a bad review. Well since that time I have sold and worked for several other vehicle manufactures and I can honestly say that in my estimation there is none better than the Isuzu Trooper, or for that matter the Isuzu Rodeo. Give this some thought... Honda Motor Company came to the Isuzu Motor Company and worked out an arrangerment to purchase Troopers to be marketed under the Acura name and the Rodeos to be marketed under the Passport name. One of the major vehicle manufactures in the world came to Isuzu instead of picking another Japanese manufacturer or for that matter an American manufacturer to private label the Trooper and Rodeo. We now have two 2000 troopers in our family, an LS and an S both with around 70,000 miles and I expect we will still have them when they reach 270,000. That is how much faith I have in the this manufacturer. If you have a trooper, you have the BEST SUV out there.

Strength:

Boxy good looks, plenty of power, seamless construction, complete reliability, incredible value. Nothing in it's price range even comes close to the tight, luxurious quality feeling of this suv. I have had 70k + of trouble-free driving. It's aero/boxy styling is timeless and classy, looks like you spent twice the price. People still think it's a new car.

Weakness:

Check engine, check trans. lights come on occasionally for no known reason. I put bigger, fatter rims/ tires and like the wider stance. High speed wind noise is a minor annoyance.

Purchased in 2002 w/30,000 miles, it now has 101,000 and has been an incredible vehicle. It looks and drives like a Lexus, it's as reliable as a Honda, and at five years old it seems like brand new! I was shopping for a newer model Rodeo to replace my '93 and was surprised to find the Trooper I'd always really wanted was so affordable. I plan to drive it til the new Troopers are unveiled, supposedly in 2006. Hope they are as wonderful as my 2000. If not, I'll be shopping for a low milage 2002, maybe with one of those massive sunroofs this time.

Strength:

None whatsoever

Weakness:

Cheap design. Will rot out. Head gaskets/engines will blow without warning. Roll-overs. Poor handeling.

This has got to be about the worse vehicle I have ever driven or owned. I bought mine in 2004, and put about 20,000 miles on it. It was greatly underpowered, had horrible gas mileage, basically was all over the road due to its square shape (the front end and all shocks were in good shape; it's the design of the truck). After my meticulous care for the truck, the head gasket blew on the truck one morning. I shut the engine down, to find that it water-locked the engine, ruining it. I had heard that the head gaskets were a problem, but I expected some sort of warning. None at all! Do not buy these vehicles. They are dangerous, poor-maintenance trucks. This is exactly why they are not sold in the US anymore. If you buy one, don’t say that I didn’t warn you…

Drives great in the snow. Gets around 20 to 25 miles per gallon. starts right up without any problems.

Weakness:

I had to get the head machined and the valves ground at 58k.

I purchased the trooper already owning an '87 before. I bought it from a gentalmen who I sold a mazda Tribute to and he had owned it since it was new. It only had 58k miles on it and he only drove it during the winter. I love it becasue it is vertually brand new without any scratches or dings on it. It especially drives great in the snow! Now it has around 60.5k miles on it.

what an suv! only had it 5months but this beast of a truck saved my wife and daughters lives. They lost control on glare ice and they hit the ditch and rolled. Not a scratch on them but truck was written off. Until the accident the car ran great. Lots of room and power, simple elegant design, great reliability. I had the same problem with the cold weather stalls as other reviewers but the truck never broke down entirely. can't wait for the insurance money to come in so I can buy another.

Strength:

4X4 is great. Engine is powerfull and can tow easily. Attractive, classic styling and other than the complete engine failure, electrical and most mechanicals are very reliable.

Weakness:

Excessive oil consumption for no reason. Poor dealer accountability (none actually). VERY expensive parts, most must come directly from Japan (if you are Canadian.)

Purchased my Trooper because it looks great and handles well. It is a REAL truck! Beware, however, the rumours are true, the 98/99 Troopers consume oil for no apparent reason. I know, since my engine seized with only about 75 000 miles on it!! I was not due for an oil change for another 500 miles or so. I am now in the process of puting in a new engine, at a cost to myself of over $8000 Canadian.

Strength:

Reliability; value; luxury (at least in the Limited); stunning, classic looks; equipment level (who ever heard of power folding mirrors before the Trooper??); distinguished and dignified.

Weakness:

If GM hadn't had their hands around Isuzu's throat for the last 20 years, we would have seen their DI diesels..instead, GM stole it and tells you it's 'their' Duramax!!! Heck, they even had Isuzu diesels in Chevettes!!!

With almost 190,000 km on the dial, I've had no reliability issues with this truck!! Initially drawn to Isuzu because of the Impulse, which I owned and again, had no problems with for almost 10 years, when I needed a larger vehicle, it only made sense to "stay in the family". Other than routine servicing, I haven't had to change so much as a light bulb!! The Trooper's distinctive look and high level of accessories continues to amaze anyone who's inquired - the look is classic and the craftmanship is flawless. The sound quality of the stock stereo is easily fixed - replace the speakers with some good J & L's and then the head unit sounds great. Unfortunately, in Canada, they stripped some of the 'goodies' out of the Trooper to keep the price competitive - 12 disc CD changer, keyless entry, wood trim. I installed my own wood trim kit and use a CD/MP3 unit through the cassette and it's fine (and I'm a fuss-ass!!!). Being a part-time musician, I'm able to haul a lot of gear and people with ease, thanks to the huge cargo area, flexible rear seats and the versitile 70/30 split rear doors. Twice I've been hit; once in the front and another time in the rear; both times the Trooper was parked, and the damage was minimal to the Trooper while the other vehicles sustained incredible damage. This truck is built like a tank!! While not the most spirited off the line (but who really cares), the Trooper gets out of it's own way more than adequetly while delivering reasonable fuel consumption for the beast it is. The seats are very comfortable, the leather is durable, the moon roof is huge and the shift-on-the-fly 4x4 is unstoppable...I've never been stuck and this is the Great White North!! Simply put, a hidden gem in the SUV market and it's a crying shame it's no more.
