Strength:

Plenty of torque.Excellent gas mileage(23mpg city and hwy).Plenty of room inside.Has 31.50x15 tires which make it quite stable and smooth riding.

Weakness:

Rust problems (although most cars here in Canada do)

I have owned this Trooper for four years and am currently restoring it.It has 209,000 miles on it with 1 engine replacement.I have found it to be the most reliable and capable suv I have ever owned. It has the 2.6 litre 4 cylinder and produces enough torque to get it through anything I have put it up to and gets excellent gas mileage. If the newer Troopers are anything like this old one I would recomend them to anyone.

Strength:

Reliability, stoutness, comfort, affordability

Weakness:

expensive parts / lack of aftermarket parts gas mileage noisy valves - makes me worry needlessly familiarity at repair shop (not as common)

Bought used with 60,000 miles. Now have 170,000 and seems like she's just warming up. Just got back from a 12 hour long highway trip doing 75-80 mph the whole way - even powered up 4,000 foot passes in 4th gear at 70 mph. All this, of course, after a quick off road adventure in 4wd up a mountain before our departure. Vertically roomy for my long orangatang torso. Comfortable ride off road up through 80 mph on highway. Excellent back seat room (have folded seats down numerous times for home improvement materials). Good looking. For the dough, a great deal. Have had some non-typical-maintenance repairs. Replaced fuel pump ($700) at 90k; replaced starter twice (but I installed the first one!); new shocks at 110k; driver door lock shot at 130k; new clutch and brakes at 150k, recently got a tune up including new valve cover gaskets to stop oil leaks and a new water pump (along with timing belt); currently the dark blue paint on hood and roof is essentially gone. Gripes are few: would like the 3.5L for a little more punch, mpg is 16 at sea level - 18-19 in mountains, 5 speed gets tiresome to shift, valve lifters noisy, standard tires to small in height and width, front bumper is banged up because it's too "sissy", parts are expensive and harder to find, aftermarket upgrades are limited. All and all, I'm very pleased. My wife and I drove at least 20 suvs and researched that crap out of suvs before we found this one. Chose it because it was 30% less than 4run or pathfinder and seems to have paid off in that we haven't had a payment for 5 years with $50/month maintenance. Recommend this to anyone not hung up on buying American and willing to see through a problem or two here and there.

Strength:

Reliabilty, build quality, interior space, towing capacity(5000 lbs.), comfort.

Weakness:

Top heaviness produces prominent body lean in tight turns. Gas mileage (15-19 mpg).

Great SUV; well built with lots of room. Power is adequate, TOD system performs flawlessly. Low range is more then ample to get you in and out of the really rough stuff. Only gripe I have is the valves are a bit noisy.

Strength:

Versatility, Reliability, Roomy for tall passengers even in the back seats. Plenty of power.

Weakness:

Gas Mileage could be better but its a SUV. A little top heavy, but you get used to it.

This is the 6th ISUZU purchased in my immediate family as follows: 1998,1988,1991,1995,1995,1998. I personal love the versatility and reliability of the vehicles. My first 1988 (Isuzu 4 cylinder) and now my current 1998 have been my favorites. The 1991 had a GM V6 and the one of my 1995's have some annoying valve noise. The 1998 has a bigger engine with stronger performance.

Strength:

Very reliable. Solid, quiet, comfortable ride. Does very well off-road. Recently found it to be safe in a major accident. Easy to do a suspension lift, although you have to search for aftermarket parts. I was hoping to try a solid front axel conversion. Chicks dig a "foriegn" looking suv.

Weakness:

engine ticking on 3.2 litre (and probably others),just a lifter out of adjustment, but a pain to get at. Rear brake calipers lock up after a few years of dirt/ contaminated brake fluid. parts are expensive. poor gas milage typical of average mid-sized suv.

I am actually on my second trooper, my first being totaled by a lumber truck. I feel that this is one of the best SUVs out there for the money. My 97' had 132000 miles and was running strong when it got hit. I never had major problems with it. my 98' seems so much nicer.lots of options and gadgets, engine seems more powerful too.I have talked to explorer owners who have driven my zu and are amazed to find that the trooper is a much better vehicle.

Does not hold up well. Poor design in many areas. Dangerous in curves. Noisy!! Bad resale.

This was a good looking vehicle that had good reviews, but I was not happy! Kept this thing for 3 years and spent over $4000 in repairs. Engine went down at 100,000 miles. Trans was replaced under warranty. Rearend vibrated badly. Rolled horribly in turns. Small collision crushed front bumper and grill. Radiator blew up and was too small in the beginning from the factory. Timing belt tension mech. is poorly built and needs replaced often. That darn valve ticking is awlful. I can hear one coming from 50 yards and know what it is by listening to the engine tick!! Uses way too much oil. Used oil when new apparantely and many owners have told me the same story. I sold it to keep a KIA!! Parts were priced too high!

none that i know of.

I bought mine early this year with 39000 miles on it. I got a good deal but I need to replace the tires because its all worn out. I really love it, the handling, the power, and very roomy inside. My family love to drive up to the mountain for picnic/fishing/swimming, and I must tell you that I am very impressed how the truck climb and the handling specially when cornering to those winding road. And it has a power button for you to press just in case you need extra push going up, but I have'nt use it yet. All and all I am very happy for the purchase of this car.

Weakness:

that i dont have a tv in it!

I have done tons of research on this model and finally found one! They are hard to come by, especially with only 62000 miles and in PERFECT shape. Previous owner babied this thing and loved her. Love the room, the look, how awesome the engine runs, 4wd on the fly, gas mileage. Above all it looks good, can tow up to 5000 lbs, fits my whole family and a ton of stuff in the back! we rented an isuzu years ago to go to montana and i always wanted one but thought i couldnt afford it...

Model Reviewed: Isuzu Trooper LS 2WD

Strength:

The amount of room is incredible. At 6'3", I really like the 'upright' seating position - it is very comfortable! The 3.5 DOHC is more than sufficient, especially with torque, and sounds sweet. Build quality, as mentioned, is impeccible - feels like it was carved from a single piece of rock. Sight lines are excellent, and control layout is fine. Great stereo, and HUGE sunroof.

Weakness:

I wish mpg was better, but it is a truck. 16 mpg is my average. The bouncy, floating reaction to bumps was greatly fixed with poly bushings and a set of Monroe Reflex shocks. Finally, I wish instead of the 70/30 rear doors it had a liftgate. All minor stuff, really.

Wow! I love my Trooper more than expected! I needed a 'family' car 2 years ago upon the birth of my daughter, and to replace my faithful Nissan piuckup steed as it hit 200,000 miles and was acting tired. I would have loved to have gotten the Acura MDX, but it was $20k more. After much research, and dozens of test drives (Explorer, Envoy, Montero, etc), I bought the Trooper for $8k off list price. The others couldn't compare in build quality. I had no problems to date (45k miles).

Model Reviewed: Isuzu Trooper RS

Strength:

The short wheel base can maneuver very well(I have the 2door RS). Fog lamps, headlight wipers, electric folding mirrors, heated mirrors, good daily driver, or a weekend warrior offroad. Great climbing ability, very tough, good at crossing water(small creeks). Powerful A/C, and lots of clearence(stock!!!), allowing up to 33" tires without any rubbing. Auto hubs allow you to engage 4x4 High or Low while comfortably in the cab. Overall the greatest 4x4 I have driven. And the cheapest too.

Weakness:

Heavy(4,060lbs) for the power plant 3.2L V6. Gasmileage from 14(city) to 18(highway).

Great, reliable 4x4. Manual transmission, 127K miles, but running strong.
