Strength:

Cruises great at 80, 4-Low gets it anywhere, quick turning.

Weakness:

Don't get distracted on cell phone on Fry., you can drift over without noticing as it just goes where you point it.

Had to replace windshield, catalitic Converter, Starter, Fuel Pump and EGR Valve that cost $170 compared to normal price of $55 (Can't understand why I had and expensive EGR). But after that, it runs great, gets 16-19 MPG in city, needs better tires, clean inside and out, replaced seatbelts from junkyard, but only drivers was bad. 5-speed is great. I think its the best buy I have ever gotten. People tell me I stole it when I tell them how much I paid for it. Planning on 4.5 lift. The person selling it couldn't place it in a decent spot to sell, kept it under a tree that dripped sap, so it looked bad, and the cracked windshield didn't help, and I didn't know how good it was until the weekend. Wife hates it because it has no A/C, but its a jeep, who cares? Does have a slight leak in powersteering, but it doesn't leak anywhere else, runs cool, even coming over the Grapevine from Bakersfield.

Strength:

Off road prowress, ability in the snow. it's invincible. Durable engine, expect 150000 miles easy with regular maintainence. Can do anything go anywhere, especially with a few mods like a lift, tires, locker and winch-would be unstoppable. Extremely safe car.

Weakness:

rear springs soft, vibrations at high speeds, wind noise from mirrors at high speeds. Small wheel wells. Discontinued.

This is the best car I have ever driven. It is perfect size, with amazing capabilites all around. The 4.0 is unstoppable. I wouldnt trade it for anything except another cherokee. Jeep screwed up by d/c the Cherokee and introducing the liberty. This car can do anything, snow, rocks, mud, towing. I tow my families 3500lb correct craft ski boat with it with no trouble. Only weakness is the soft springs in the rear. It limits payload and tongue weight, but other than that it is perfect. Awesome mpg for any suv, even those new crappy little hybrid suvs. It gets 20mpg highway and 16 city. Those little cute utes only get 25mpg and sacrifice everything else. Extremely competent performer in all fields. Well powered. My dad wrecked his 99 Lincoln Navigator that has a V8 and 300hp. What car made the rescue trip? My XJ and my mom's 98 5.9L grand cherokee (another awesome car). A 3.5" suspension lift and 31" tires are in the works for my baby. And in the future hopefully many more upgrades. This car is extremely safe. My sister was t-boned at 45 mph in her cherokee and walked away, and the jeep drove away except for a bent frame. My other sister got in a head on wreck in her cherokee and drove it home, and my dad got in a wreck towing a boat in his cherokee and drove it home.

Strength:

Bulletproof motor. Well proven design. (1984 was introduction date)Motor was introduced in 1966 (?) By AMC Corp. Re-designed in 1986 for the Cherokee after a dispute with General Motors over the 2.8 V6 (A poor performer) Turning radius is terrific. Plenty of power (6 cyl.) Rides and handles very well for a short wheelbase SUV. They should have kept building this gem.

Weakness:

Ride, seat comfort, lack of room. Early G.M. V6 1986-1988 5-speed trans.

Best all around SUV ever designed. Build quality suffered somewhat under Chrysler but engineering improved somewhat. Fuel mileage is very good for a 4x4. Any true off-road capable vehicle that can get around 20mpg with auto. trans. and air cond. is hard to beat. Look for the Sport model (Discontinued in 2000?) if any real off-roading is planned. Definitely opt for the inline six cylinder motor. The four banger is a good motor but has to run hard to keep up and mpg's aren't much better than six.

Strength:

Power, usefullness, reliability, looks like nothing else. Rides well for a truck. If you wanted a car, then you should get one.

Weakness:

The usual gripes - intermittant keyless entry, finicky power windows, spare tire inside, noisy A/C unit. (But works fine.)

As close to perfect as an all purpose vehicle gets. Really seems to do everything well, from snowy roads to no roads to New York City highways. Haven't been able to get it stuck, and I'm usually pretty good at this. Will carry almost anything. I'm a contractor and I generally carry a lot. Keeps up with newer, high tech SUV's yet is so much more capable in the rough. Looks like nothing else, relatively easy to work on, handles well for what it is and has been very reliable.

4.0 L one of the best motors built Not afraid to offroad, unlike some other SUV's. Econmical to repair Steel bumpers Headlight bulbs, instead of those expesnive "bucket" units. Easy to repair

Weakness:

So-so gas mileage (19 city and highway combned) Some squeaks (hey, at 174K what do you expect?) Road manners aren't as smooth as newer designs... Early 90's Chyrsler paint prepping methods (just had it stripped and completly redone)

I bought my Jeep in April '93 with 14,000 miles on it.. It now has 174,000 miles on it.. Only things replaced, starter, waterpump, headlight switch, and regular maintence items (exhaust, belts, tires, brakes, tune-up) This vechicle has been nothing short of incredible. It a world today of plastic, crapy vechicles. It's nice to have something with a little tlc, keeps running. NEVER added oil between changes (every 2000 miles) The A/C has just stopped working (no recharges) after 12 years. It has never broken down on me. And I just restored the unit and plan to keep it another few years.

Strength:

The 3rd day I owned it (102 miles on the odometer), a young kid in a Grand Am rear-ended me. Needless to say... I won that battle. The entire front end of the Grand Am was WRECKED (bumper, grill, headlights, hood, etc...), while my baby suffered only a fingernail-sized scratch on the bumper. Engine is strong and easy to work on. Fluids are easy to change. Even the lift kit and replacement suspension bushings were fairly simple and straight forward. It tows my 3,600 lb. MaterCraft well, but DEFINITELY benefited from the addition of Rancho Air Shocks and an aftermarket transmission cooler.

Weakness:

My gas milage is lower than I would like it to be (16-19 highway), but I knew it wasn't a Honda Civic when I bought it. It has recently slipped a few MPG, which may be due to a dated O2 sensor. Other minor problem areas include... paint damage to the top of the liftgate and the underside of the doors (both repainted under warranty), little squeeks and rattles from the back doors and the tailgate, power window switches that "act up" on occasion due to water dripping in from rain gutter placement. Also... I have had to replace the rotors 4-5 times now, and have probably gone through 8 sets of pads. The rear shoes are still original and have plenty of life left on them, but the fronts get chewed-up pretty quickly. I personally think the brakes are too small for this vehicle, despite its light weight (3,100 lbs). I don't tow my boat that often, and the trailerr has electric brakes on it, so I don't think the brake problems stem from towing the boat.

I am the original owner my '98 Gunmetal Blue XJ, and still LOVE getting in it and driving it everyday. With 110,000+ miles on it, it has yet to spend one day in the shop and is going strong. Granted... I am rather handy in the garage, but not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination. I am religious about changing the oil (Quaker State 4x4 Synthetic Blend) and am always on the lookout for "puddles" of trans/differential/radiator fluids. But I have yet to find any discoloration to my driveway or garage floor. I have done a lot of maintenance myself, which may be why it hasn't spent any time at the dealership, but nothing too big. I replaced the radiator (my fault for letting the coolant go too long), replaced the front axle hub assemblies, brakes, fluids, etc... No major engine, transmission, or drive train problems what so ever! In addition, I have added a small 2" suspension lift in order to clear 30 x 9.50 tires, a K&N air filter system, air-adjustable shocks, a transmission cooler, and polyeurathene bushings on every suspension component. You can definitely tell it isn't stock, but it doesn't look like a monster truck by any means. It has maintained it's civility on the road, while gaining a little bit of clearance off road. Overall... I couldn't be happier and I don't ever plan on selling my Cherokee. Once I finish Grad School, I would like to get a sports car with a drop-top for the summer months, and keep the XJ around for off-roading, inclimate weather, and for towing my ski boat. I have found numerous aftermarket suppliers that offer an endless assortment of replacement parts and upgrades. Check out www.quadratec.com for a TON of Cherokee items (one of the best all-around Cherokee-specific companies I have found).

Ride, room, sound system, veratility. I love the seats. She is so comfortable. Can get dirty and she likes it.

Weakness:

Shake between 45-48 mph, changing brakes, Fuses needed to be replaced along with fog light, and a sensor. I can' believe that they are not made any more.

Wonderful Jeep, Love the body, the ride, the room. Best vehicle I have ever driven. Willing to get down and dirty. I have wanted a Jeep since 85, now I have my dream. All the fetures this Jeep has are great. Everyone looks at me strange when i talk about my Jeep. ( All I have to say is; it is a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand) She still smells new, looks new, and drives like new. If it were not for the shake in the wheel around 45-48 mph, the having to take her back to the dealer within 6 days to have new rear drums put on, fuses replaced, fog light replaced, and a sensor replaced (All under warrenty) This would be perfect. But Life is never that easy. Atleast i got her.

4.0L has plenty of power and good response, part-time 4WD excellent in the snow, engine and compartment setup makes maintence easy, plenty of stowage space for a decent vacation, terrific for mild off-road driving for a factory setup, Gas milage ain't bad but I improved mine with K&N filter charger+ Split-fire spark plugs + Performance exhaust.

Weakness:

mechanical: Location of oil pressure sending unit so close to oil-filter I broke it on first oil change( Little plastic part from Jeep $23.50), A/C leaks the coolant haven't found the leak yet, minor engine oil leaks but never have to add between oil changes, passenger door lock doesn't open with power button, Cosmetic and comfort: Factory steel wheels rust quickly, Chili Pepper Red paint chips easily and is eaten easily by bird-poop, taller people tell me the back seat is cramped, but I wouldn't know.

Purchased with 34k on it, was a lease return. I love to drive my jeep, relible and practical, comfortable ride, great in PA snowstorms. My jeep has had its share of problems, but it's maintained by the book ( I take care of it and it takes care of me)
