Strength:

Unlike most Jeep GCL owners, I'm not experiencing warped brake discs. Thank God.
She rides smoothly. Quiet ride. Comfortable seating.
Mine has all power locks/windows and remote keyless. I like the theft deterrent on the keys. (If someone uses a key that is not the original, the fuel pump shuts down after a mile).
Great for hauling people, animals, and objects.
I love the standard privacy tint on the back windows.
Looks cute and sporty.
The bumper is impossible to dent it seems.
Drives good at highway speeds and accelerates well.
WONDERFUL at going up steep hills.

Weakness:

Window regulators keep breaking. Jeep refuses to acknowledge that they are a continuing problem- but I've read several owner reviews where they state the window regulators keep breaking. I've replaced the driver side one three times and the passenger side one four times (all while under original warranty) and the left one has broke again! It is a 300.00+ part, which I'm not keen on paying, especially since they break about once a year.
The gas milege is terrible. (But hey, it's a SUV). I average about 20 mph in the city and about 25 highway. Last time I filled up (two weeks ago) it cost me about 55.00 to fill. When I first bought it it costs an average of 40.00, but gas prices have risen since then.
The bolt under the driver and passenger seat keep coming loose, which kind of scare me.
The paint keeps coming off the hood when I wash it or when it rains (no matter how soft the water hits it).
Occasionally (about every three weeks) it will "jump" when you try to take off (taking a moment to slide into gear, and you can feel it) or it won't come out of neutral completely.
It doesn't like to start in cold weather.
The air takes almost 10 minutes to blow cold (and that's with new freon in it!)

I've had my Jeep for almost 4 years now (it has 56k miles on it. I bought it in 2002 with 5k miles on it). And while I love the way it drives- I will never own another one after this.

It's a 4dr 2wd. I change the oil every 3000 and keep up regular maintance on it. I baby it.

It's fun to drive in, but I will never own another one. I'm trying to sell mine currently.

Steering, Suspension, In town mileage

This is not my first Jeep, but is my first two wheel drive Jeep. Nice looking vehicle, with plenty of room. It has the 4.0 I6. It has plenty of power. We have driven it on several trips, and had no problems on the interstates staying with traffic, or passing. No problems on mountain roads. We have had no mechanical problems. It had 26,000 miles we we purchased, now has 36,000. I have heard about brake problems, but have not experienced any. The 4 wheel disc anti-lock saved us when we came around a curve on a mountain road in the rain and found a tree had fallen across the road. The on board computer shows we are getting an average 25 to 26 mpg on interstate trips, but only about 15 to 16 in town. My biggest complaint is the ride. I do not like the feel of the steering, and the suspension leaves alot to be desired. In all, it is a solid vehicle. I will always own a Jeep of one kind or another.

Model Reviewed: jeep grand cherokee laredo

Strength:

With all the above said, the GC is very nice to drive, obviously looks very appealing, got a decent price on it.

Weakness:

Hmm..Stuff breaking down I guess. Of, course I bought it with a lot of miles and don't really know how the previous owner/s treated it. I have high hopes for it though, I think with proper maintenance, the engine can live really really long.

Ok, I wish I had found this site before buying my Grand Cherokee just over a month ago because I'm finding that some of this stuff is true. I bought a 2002 model with 93,000 miles on it (yes lots of miles), but I test drove it and it seemed fine drove great. The interior was spotlessly clean, and my thinking was that whoever took such good care of the interior would have also probably taken good care of the engine. The biggest thing that made me fall for it, of course, was the looks. Is this not one of the best looking SUVs or what? However, 2 (read TWO) days after purchase, Jeep would not start on the first try. It started on 2nd try, but still barely. Took it to the place where I bought it, they looked at it and I was told that it was the fuel pump. They replaced it and thankfully it has been starting fine since. Ok, second problem, also within days of purchase, check engine light came on. Took it to a Chrysler dealership, paid $90 for a diagnostic, and it turned out that the camshaft position sensor was shot, and it was caused by a vacuum leak in the gas cap, and it would cost over $200 to have it fixed. Obviosly, I wasn't about to pay for this so I went to the place where I bought it again and made them pay, which they reluctantly did. These guys, Mr. Haynes and Mr. Hayner, two elderly gentlemen, actually sat there and told me and my mom who was with me that it's perfectly normal for things to start breaking on a ten thousand dollar car within days of purchase. They said it's the most normal thing in the world, happens all the time. Then they proceeded to insult my intelligence by telling me that things break when you own a car and it's part of owning a car. It took everything I had in me not to scream at him "BUT NOT WITHIN DAYS AFTER PAYING 10,000 FOR IT YOU IDIOT" I mean don't Mr. Hayner and Mr. Hanes see how it might be just a tiny weeny bit frustrating when you have multiple things breaking down not even 48 hours after shelling out 10 grand? I wish I knew where they stood on this issue before doing business with them. Thankfully, I purchased a limited warranty on the damn thing which also cost me $1200. The warranty actually didn't cover the camshaft sensor which is the reason THEY had to pay for it. Anyways, moving on to the next set of problems. When shifting into reverse, the GC makes a very ominous sounding noise. I'm praying to God that this doesn't end up costing me money. The AC, for unknown reasons, occasionally stops blowing for about 3-4 seconds, and then starts up again. I am starting to hear my breaks when breaking, so I'm concerned about the whole warped rotor issue I've been reading about on this site. Still not bad enough to require my full attention, but something tells me it's only a matter of time. Also, when it was in the shop to have the camshaft sensor replaced, the shop people told me that the front right window motor just died for no reason. Thankfully that was covered under my limited warranty. It would have cost me over $300 if it wasn't. Another thing that annoys the **** out of me is the gas cap/door. Neither the door nor the cap locks. Just open access to anybody who might have an interest in pouring a "gift" into your gas tank. That is ridiculous. I've already changed the engine oil and the transmission fluid, and I'm also using a fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank. I'm hoping to get a lot more life out of this thing, and since the camshaft thing, it's been going well.

EVERYTHING!!!!!

DO NOT BUY A JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE! It is the biggest piece of junk that you can buy! I would have been better walking! I honestly could have a porsche by now with all of the money that I've had to put into my Jeep Grand Cherokee. I had read bad reviews but also had read good ones so I thought, "it's just a few that are bad, it won't happen to me." Boy, was I wrong! The following are the many things that have gone wrong:

*I have had to replace the E-Vap line because it was leaking gas fumes and would cause all sorts of lights to come on inside the car
*I had to replace some sort of electrical system because the car wouldn't register that all of the doors were closed and all the lights would come on inside the car
*I had to replace the back window on the driver's side because it fell in one day when I shut the door
*I had to replace the driver's window because it also fell in one day when I let the window up
*I had to have the gear shifter fixed because it wouldn't register that the car was in park and wouldn't let me remove my key from the ignition
*I had to reaplce the back cupholder because there was a screw inside of the middle console that cracked the back cupholder the first time it was pulled out
*I had to have the lights on the seat heater switches replaced because they both went out

It has been one thing after another with this SUV and it never stops! I am a teenage girl who got this car brand new in 2002 and I am not rough with this car whatsoever. It is ridiculous how much money that has had to be put into my Jeep Grand Cherokee. If you buy this car, it is the worst investment that you could EVER make! Also not to mention, the Jeep service departments aren't willing to help you at all and could care less if they see you every other week to have something fixed!

I bought the Grand Cherokee over a year ago with already 40,000 miles on it, and I have 64,000 miles on it at the moment. I did go through some problems with it, but nothing yet that prohibited me from driving it. Eg. AC is not working properly on the passengers side; emission controle had some failures; battery did indeed die after 45000 miles, but overall I must say It's been not too bad. Seats are comfortable, I like the interior: nothing special, but nice and simple. I own the 2wd v6 engine and I think that the v8 would have been a better choice but anyhow I live in Florida: no mountains to overcome. Honestly, I hear lots of bad things about this car and a few things good, so I'm hoping I get lucky with this one.

So far I like the ride even more than the 99 model, I like the 3.7 but probally would prefer the tried and true inline 4.0 6 cyl.
At this point I'd say I like the exterior better on the 2006, and the interior on the 1999.

Weakness:

The gas mileage is what they claim 17/22 but my 1999 was better 19/25.

In 1998 I leased the 1999 Grand Cherokee laredo 4x4,at that time the jeep only shared 120 parts with the previous year and I took the gamble. I had it 36 months and never took it to the dealer once for warranty work, and the same brakes, rotors and tires even were on it when I turned it in. I regretted not buying it after the lease was up and decided recently it was time to experence the Jeep ride again.

Strength:

Great comfort both off road and on pavement. It will handle the most challenging off road access and do so with command. In bad weather like snow we are very comfortable driving. This vehicle will pull most anything...10,000 pound utility trailer, and a camper that weighs about 4,000 pounds all the way to Alaska and back (10,000 miles) with comfort and style. We greatly enjoy this vehicle now with about 134,000 miles. We have had two other Jeeps before the GC and have driven them over 200,000 miles without problems. Great vehicles.

Weakness:

Brakes are a chronic problem with this vehicle. The front rotors warp about avery 20,000 miles. The rear not so often. The warping isn't associated with trailer pulling as it happens even when we don't pull. Also, our trailers have brakes. Chrysler needs to fix this.

We have greatly enjoyed this vehicle (we bought it pre-owned). It has pulled trailers, both utility and recreational. It would pull most anything! It has great power, great transmission, and very comfortable. It now has 134,000 miles and going strong. It has a chronic problem, however. The brake rotors warp often. That should be taken care of by Chrysler; a major flaw.

I bought the expenctive 4wd system where it turns on 4wd when the jeep needs it and it makers it VERY hard on gas. Other than that it is the best.

This is my second Jeep Wrangler. I've had it since it was new in 1998. Still running strong after 98K+ miles. No "major" repairs needed so far, just the regular stuff (e.g. tires, brakes, tune-ups). I added a 4" suspension lift and 33" tires..lots of fun offroad.

Model Reviewed: Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 4WD

Strength:

Perfect combination of power and the best mechanical 4 wheel drive system available. I am not a fan of the computer generated gizmo's the foreign models seem to favor. The solid front axle and large windows all around are a big improvement over the 05 model that replaced it. The feeling of both comfort and invincibility on dangerous winter roads makes getting the Overland worth the very competitive price should Daimler try designing another one. This is not some newly invented all wheel drive shopping mall status symbol, this is a true Jeep that reaches back to the American military's original replacement for the Horse that the G.I.'s first called, a Jeep ! General Eisenhower named that primitive Jeep one of 5 inventions that made winning WW 2 possible. Other honored inventions of legend that met that requirement were the M-1 " Garand " rifle, the B-17 bomber, and the C-47 (DC-3). Jepp should always 'mean something' to Americans, the "Overland" follows that tradition.

Weakness:

Message To Daimler . . . .Only 86 % of my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 4 X 4 was made in America. I'd prefer 100% ! Needs a Cell Phone mount, and better cup holders. Loose the Chrome Wheels, paint the mirrors to match the way you did the door and rear gate handles, and trim. Also having no choice of interior colors still won't get me to test drive your Alabama-Benz, M model (for Mom ?) SUV Mini-Van Jeep WannaBe !

Bought New December 2003, Excellent buy, adjusted for inflation thousands less than my 94 Limited was in 1993. Every option except adj. pedals, and an engine block heater. Price shown is before the sales tax but includes all the many rebates, discounts etc. Brown's offered me. Look at other reviews and see how much some people paid for a used and lesser model, I got a great deal ! Comfortable, last in series before the redesigned 05 makes this a big plus. Tried and True design, better visibility than the redesigned 05, has a solid, (as in Off-Road) front axle, not the soccer-mom adddition in the 05. Quadra-Drive system HO 4.7 V-8 makes an excellent combination. Mileage is higher than I'd like at 18 hwy @ 55 mph, but it is still agile and very capable off road. This 'Top-Of-The-Line' OVERLAND model demotes the 'Limited' model to mid-range, and the Laredo to the base model Grand. Looks great with no black trim, or door handles, but they could have painted the outside mirrors to match, and did not. Chrome wheels are a little too, "Pymp My Ride" for my taste, but many people like them. I guess they'll 'grow' on me. I went for the Satellite Navigation System, which comes in handy and is easy to read, and set. The 10 disc CD changer is first rate and easily understood. In addition to better cup holders a sensible mount for a cell phone on the dash would be a great idea. I made my own on my 94 limited, guess I'll have to invent one for the Overland also. Hand held cell phones are sensibly illegal in New York, so mounting them in eye level locations where they can be dialed, and answered while wearing a headset, and plugging the phone into the power outlet is a convenience the auto companies haven't yet figured out. Last year 2600 Americans died from cell phone related auto accidents, because some people think talking is more important than driving safely. The Overland is a wonderful idea for Jeep. The Overland Jeep comes fully equipped with all the best off-road gear the factory can install. I am surprised the badging is so inconspicuous, Jeep should show off its best Grand Cherokee more impressively! The skid plates, tow hooks, fog lights and Quadra Drive make this an impressive winter performer as well. I have traversed some 'white-out' farm roads where the telephone poles were the only indication I had of the road I was driving on. I left two deep ruts for lesser vehicles to follow, if they dared, one night in a blizzard. The Overland took me home with comfort and safety that night. I almost look forward to the next 'test' I can put it through
