Strength:

Bon Jovi Hot Rod power that is absolutely sickening off road....WAY SCARY!!! Goes wehre it shouldn't even THINK about going. The best car I have ever driven in snow, traction like its on rails. 21 mpg with a v-8. No methanical problems even though I drive it aggressively at 36,000. Better off-r0ad by FAR than a lifted 1972 CJ5 with locker rearend.

Weakness:

Tiny on the inside, but that is the compromise you make for tiny (Read "Maneuverable" off road) exterior dimensions. Rear seats are a piece of crap for laying down for more cargo area. Rear window defroster quit working for no reason.

Strongly recommend.....UN-FU#@ing-believable Off Road and in the Snow. A total animal of a 4wd. Used it to swim through three-foot deep Germania creek at four crossings and 4 miles of excrutiatingly nightmarish rockgarden without a slip, whine or burp. At the top was an S-10 Blazer with a busted axle, a Durango crunched and high centered and an explorer with a busted oil pan and a grenaded tranny. I once pulled TWO Wranglers out of 2 feet of new snow. You will be saying to yourself "If this thing actually gets stuck here, its gonna cost a fortune for a helicopter to get out of here." Three Forks of the Owyhee River - Literally was pushing mud with the front bumper, FLOATING dowhill in a sea of mud and the sucker yanked it right back out of a DESPERATE situation...I stepped out and was up to my knees instantly in horrifying gumbo.

Strength:

Weakness:

Lack of build quality, lack of reliability, but most of all Jeep dealers that DO NOT UNDERSTAND CUSTOMER SERVICE

I have had this Jeep for two years and still love the style. But overall, my recommendation would be to spend the extra money and but a Asian import. Jeep manufacturing quality is terrible and the Jeep Dealers I have been forced to visit have the worst attitudes or simple indifference of any service people in any business I have ever encountered. In particular, the dealer in Long Beach (Cherry Street) should be put out of our misery by the BBB. Every time I take my Jeep there (brake noise, coolent leak, rear-end noise...) the standard answer I get is "seems OK to me". Well guess what - IT IS NOT OK TO ME!!

Save your money and buy a Acura or similar. You will be much happier!

Where do I start.
Differentials are the worst of any SUV Have had mine replaced 3 times.
Car has the Death Wobble since 40000 miles
Sway bars links replaced 3 times.
Transfer case replaced.
No room in the rear tire takes too much room.
poor paint quality

Best I can say is average for a $30,000 vehicle

Go to the Jeeps Unlimited Forum. They are definately trying to raise the score of this vehicle.

If you read the JU forum, they admit they too have problems, but still love the off road capability of the vehicle. I commend them on their dedication. The general public or "Grocery Getters" as they call them generally does not tolerate poor quality and high expensive upkeep in a $30,000 vehicle. If the jeep was made to go off road, you would think it could make it to the store to get some groceries without a huge repair expense?

After owning a string of Grand Cherokees, the restyled 1999-2001 model is the best yet. Great looks, ride, and creature comforts. You gotta love the kick in the pants you get from the V8.

Strength:

The WJ 4.7 Liters V8 is an excellent engine. Very fast and powerful.

Weakness:

Quality wise, it is one of the worst in the market. Very unreliable and breaks all the time. Service dealers are very bad in quality and service(they often forget to put oil in the engines and put wrong belts that damage the water pump and alternator - too many people with this problem..!!!), and the company and service dealers look for any excuse to void the warranty(bigger tires, lift, anything). Unless you are a mechanic or like paying for bad service and repairs, don't buy this vehicle. It is a nightmare in the short and long term.

Most of my friends have had similar experiences, and most of them have already sold/traded their vehicles. Although, very few have been very lucky and just had some problems when they first bought it.

I owned 3 Jeeps Grand Cherokees. A 1997 5.2L V8 ZJ, a 1999 WJ 4.0 L I6, and a 1999 WJ 4.7 L V8. I used them mostly for work (95%) of the time.

For rock climbing or obstacle crossing, it is the best. It has high ground clearance and the solid axles and the long axle drop helps a lot. Although, you have to invest lots of money changing brake rotors, fuel pumps, shocks, springs, lifting it, etc. in order to compensate for low quality materials, design issues(bigger tires do not fit), and defects.

Quality wise, it is one of the worst in the market. Very unreliable and breaks all the time.

Mercedes ML / Acura MDX- If you ride on the road 80% of the time and don't do any extreme rock climbing or obstacle crossing, the ML or MDX are way above in quality, technology, and capabilities. Technology wise, the Jeep is a dinosaur compared to the ML or MDX on-road/off-road technology and capabilities(this comming from a serious ex-Jeep JGC owner). The Jeep 4x4 licensed technology called QuadraDrive can be found now in many other vehicles (VersaTrac, etc). The only Jeep advantage is the antiquate truck type solid axles, which let the Jeep climb obstacles better but gives a truck type ride to it compared to the newer generation SUV's.

This WJ is the best vehicle I have ever owned. You guys can obviously don't know a thing about what Jeep and 4x4 owners demand out of a vehicle to get your ratings.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is an absolute blast to own and drive. It is fast, sporty and sleek on the roads, and unstoppable off. It can put sports cars to shame in the stoplight derby, and wallow in mudpits with the trucks. QuadraDrive is the most advanced 4x4 system on the planet, and the solid axles front and rear, coil sprung, offer incredible articulation. Yes, there are some problems with a few vehicles, but these owners should solve them and quit whining! My '99 had issues, I had a few TSBs performed promptly by a very competent dealer, and I would not trade my baby in for the World. All issues can be fixed, and what you are left with is the best 4x4 on the planet, the best of all worlds, onroad and off.

Strength:

1) Power
2) Amenities
3) Comfort
4) Styling

Weakness:

1) Brakes
2) Fuel Economy (I average 15mpg although the computer tries to tell me 17mpg)
3) The headrests don't come up high enough to support my head
4) Expensive ('02's sticker out @ $40k)

My experience has been that this is a good, solid vehicle despite it's reputation for trouble. I'm tall(6'4'') and the vehicle has adequate headroom w/o the sunroof (special order). The power from the V8 is phenomenal. I can out-accelerate (up steep mountain roads) and distance myself from other cars when desired. The Quadra-drive is the best 4wd or Awd system I have owned. It did though require several computer updates when I first purchased the vehicle to get there. Handling is acceptable although I did add stiffer shocks similar to the Up-Country suspension. The brakes have been the major area of discontent for me. My vehicle has had an almost constant shimmy when applying the brakes. I've had the pads and rotors replaced, but the problem persists. Amenities, including the sound system, heated seats, steering wheel controls and power everything, help to make this a very pleasent vehicle in which to spend time. I've put over 60k on it in two years and have enjoyed most every mile.
