Strength:

Turning radius is good. That is about it.

Weakness:

Poor materials and construction. Windows are falling apart. Bumper is falling off and we have never had an accident. Poor performance in wind, rain and snow.

This car is a terrible. It handles poorly in wind, rain and snow. Worse yet, KIA does not stand behind it's product. Every warrentee repair we had to make, KIA tried to blame it on us and not pay for it. Stay away from KIA.....

Plenty of room for me, the kids and our stuff.

Weakness:

Just about everything else. No resale value

My 99 Sportage has been a peice of crap from day one. It handles badly in wind and wet roads, worse in the snow and ice. I'm afraid it will blow up in the heat. It's noisy, rattles and chirps. I've had numerous problems, most I have learned to live with as nothing ever gets fixed when it's at the shop. 2 windows no longer work, rear cup holder broke days after I bought it, sun visors fell off, rear window wiper quit working along with the washer, the spare tire holder is very rusted and comes attached when I'm on a rough road, it's hard to open at other times. The front rims are constantly black with dust, I'm unable to get them clean again. The brakes have been replaced 3 times, fuel pump 2 times, I've been through many tires. The check engine light goes on and off regularly. ?Container canister replaced to prevent the engine light but it was on about 3 hours later. The car has no power and isn't great on gas milage. It also will completely quit while going down the road at 70 miles an hour, sometimes quietly, other times with a jerk that makes you think the end is near. Cd player won't work when it's cold. Fuses blow frequently. Leaks oil and it's now smoking. Since this was my first new car I was good about regular maintenence, oil changes, etc. I had severe damage from hitting a deer this winter, air bags didn't deploy. I've fixed so much stuff on this car and owe more than it's worth.

Horrible in every way.

The worst car I have ever had!!!! One problem after another. Most recently the cars throttle locked and my brakes wouldn't work as I was driving on a major highway. I couldn't stop the car. I dialed 911. They talked me through stopping the car. The only thing that final stopped the car was pulling the emergency brake. I am a single mom with a toddler. I thank god that I'm still alive. I will never buy a kia again!

Strength:

Initial quality is 100%! No one is more amazed than I am. Excellent seating position. Taught suspension. Well appointed. So far I haven't found any fit and finish problems. Some clever engineering such as being able to fold down the rear seats with one hand and not having to remove headrests, move front seat forward or anything). Solid vehicle. A pleasure to drive.

Weakness:

Not thrilled with the gas milage which has been 17 around town and between 20 and 26 on the highway depending on whether I am going 80 or 60. I think Kia needs to develope a 5-speed automatic. The only other constructive criticism I could offer them is to do a little more to deaden road noise in the rear.

Just turned 5,000 on the Sprotage we took delivery of Memorial Day weekend. The miles include one 1,400 mile trip and the rest around town. Absolutely not one single warranty issue so far.

cheap

Weakness:

It's cheap for a reason. Kia spends too much on making it look cute, and adding accessories, Power everything, cheaply made in all areas that matter.

I bought the car over a year ago. It had just over 59,000 m on it, low. They engine went out about a month after purchasing the vehicle. This was a result of a loose bearing. I had made one payment. I have had nothing but problems. Belts squeeling, master control panel switch for window replaced, check engine light on and off as a result of air flow sensory, stalling, temperature gauge replaced 3 times [this caused the stalling]. Hard to find auto shops knowledgable enough to work on car. Many other problems. Have read other reviews, all same problems, all reacurring. Trying to sell. No one will buy. Regret ever buying the car. Will never buy a kia ever again.

I Have Owned This Suv A Litte Over 3 Months Now And I Havent Had Any Problems Yet. I Took It Off Roading Up In New Jersey OVer The Winter And I Was Superized It Kept Up With The Grand Vitara And Tracker. I Love The Sound System And The Acceleration...Its Pretty Powerful For A 4 Cyl. And There Is Alot More Room Than The Old Rav4's (96-2000) The Only Things I Dont Like Is There Is Not Alot Of Storeage Or Room In The Trunk Unless you Fold Down The Back Seats (Witch Is A Pain, The Interior Materials Scratch VERRY EASY!!! The Back Seats Are A Little Cramped For Passengers... And The Tailgate Doesnt Open All The Way Makeing It Hard To Fit Large ITems In The Trunk But Other Than That I Love The Litte Thing!! If Your Looking For A Cheap, Economical , "GO ANY WHERE VEHICLE" I Highly Recomend The Toyota Rav4

Model Reviewed: Kia Sportage Canvas Top

Strength:

cute, versatile, responsive on dry pavement, great gas mileage and warranty

Weakness:

unsafe, unsafe, unsafe

Kia Sportage: Dangerous at any speed. I am the owner of three Kia Sportages, all canvas tops. I originally bought one for my daughter to get to and from High School, but after rolling the vehicle in her first Alaska winter, I gave her my Explorer and I used the Sportage, after expensive and extensive repairs. What developed was an appreciation for a great vehicle. I thought. I purchased a second one in 2002 when the Anchorage Kia dealer severely discounted their last canvas top and I received an additional 1000 owner loyalty rebate form Kia. Over the holidays I drove my Chevy Tahoe down to Oklahoma, and purchased a third Sportage while down there, planning to sell my Alaska Sportages when I relocate to Oklahoma later this year. This week I was leaving the Wal-Mart parking lot in my 2002 Sportage. The parking lot descends down a wide 10-15 degree sloping two lane road to intersect the main road. As soon as I entered the sloping area and started braking my Sportage went into an uncontrollable slide. I was doing less than 5-10 miles an hour when I started braking, as a Subaru was stopped at the bottom of the road, waiting to merge. The Sportage wheels locked up and I slid for 100 feet or so and hit the back of the Subaru. There was nothing I could do in terms of steering or pumping the brakes to stop the slide. The vehicle speed never diminshed due to the road surface and sloping conditions. On impact my forehead went into the sun visor and opened a gash, even though the impact speed was slow; the vehicle never slowed below 5 MPH due to the road slope. The Subaru had visible but relatively low damage compared to my Sportage. The front bumper was an absolute and total loss, and did little to protect me from impacting the visor, even with the seat belt I always wear. If I had not hit the visor I would certainly have gone into the windshield. Again, the vehicle speed was only about 5 MPH. I have a tremendous affection for the Kia Sportage. They are cute, responsive, fun to drive and very well assembled. but after this second accident I am re-assessing whether I even want to own a Kia Sportage in Oklahoma. The extent of damage the vehicle sustained is severe, but more importantly I received a head inhury at a speed that should have not subjected me to harm. Neither of the driver side air bags deployed. In fairness to Kia, later that afternoon a three car accident occurred at the same intersection due to the very same conditions. My problem with Kia is that they have a responsibility to build safe vehicles. My Sportage does not have anti-lock braking, which probably would have been enough to give me a chance to steer out of harms way. But beyond that, the air bags did not deploy, and my head hitting the visor should have been preventable. Depsite my affectionn for these cute and versatile vehilces, I have no confidence in Kia engineering, and will likley dispose of all three Sportages. To all winter drivers of Kia Sportages. Be safe, go slow, and avoid any abrupt braking on icy roads. The Kia Sportage is deangerous at any speed.

Strength:

nice interior, roomy, trunk space, gauges are easily read

Weakness:

placement of everything, acceleration, under the engine(everything), wear and tear on the car is a little extreme

I bought this kia with only 6,000 miles on it( almost brand new.) In the past I have had a hyundai (horrible car) and a honda which i loved. I saw that the kia got good gas mileage and was in my price range so i opted for it. It was the worst decision ever. At about 40,000 miles I had so many problems such as my car bouncing and my car pulls horribly to the right (and yes ive had everything aligned and changed) The stereo sounds shotty and the inside is falling apart and peeling. The outside scratches and dents very easily. The ride is nice but acceleration is not as good as i had expected. The gas mileage has went down also, but I think that is expected in every car. The trunk space is great and its nice how you can fold down the back seat for more room. The cupholder placement is very bad. And the bottom of it broke within three days. The seats are nice and everything and the outside looks very nice. It is very hard to keep clean though. It handles alright though

Can zip in and out of anywhere. Decent gas mileage although NOT what the salesman said. Actually gets about 25 mpg.

Weakness:

Insurance is rather pricey.

FYI - engine light comes on because gas cap is not on correctly - per my $50 mechanic bill. Light comes on that says back flap is not fastened if electronic sensor is not sprayed with cleaner regularly.

Strength:

Low monthly payments. Rear seats fold down easily. Cargo area holds plenty for what I use it for. Items don't slide around as bad as other vehicles. Alloy wheels look nice when clean, but they never are - constant brake dust. Excellent turn radius.

Weakness:

Does not handle well in wind or rain. May become new extreme sport in next Olympic Games. Comparable to wind surfing when on the interstate, and roller skating when it rains. Power windows & mirrors work periodically (not very often). Front windows won't roll up at all when traveling on freeway due to strange wind/pressure (see windsurfing instructions above). Takes both hands to open back hatch. Takes both hands plus a butt bump to close it. Front cup holder blocks air & heat vents, radio, clock & controls. Back cup holder fell apart within week of purchase. Seems to wear brakes & tires at warp speed. (Manufacturer denies this, calling it simply wear and tear which it is not). I travel less than 10 miles round trip to work every day and keep vehicle in the garage. This is abnormal. And don't tell me I need to rotate & balance either. I do. There is a belt or fan or something that squeals constantly, with no cause found. A/C compressor went out very early. Those of you who still have cold air should consider yourselves lucky. A/C is only cold if car is moving at least 60 mph - almost impossible. Paint peeling off both bumpers almost immediately after purchase. Dealer said I must have hit something. I did not. ZERO power. I urge everyone to test drive on the freeway (I only drove in town) before buying. It is almost impossible to get up enough speed to merge into traffic without causing an accident. I've had other 4 cyl. in the past, but none as bad as this one. I don't know if it's too heavy for the engine or what.

Purchased in February 2001 with 9,000 miles on it. Now has 52,000 and absolutely NO resale value. Even Kia doesn't want them back. They won't pay off the loan, or even give $1000 "owner loyalty" on trade-in. I must be honest in that I haven't had as many major problems as other on here though.
