DONT BUY this or any other landrover/rangerover these are the worst cars I have ever bought new, their customer service is a joke, this company deserves to go out of business, and I hope they do, and when you go in to get the car serviced bring alot of money. I feel so ripped off .Transmission went @46k, sunroof after using it maybe 5 times (I dont like sunroofs)to repair 1500. what a rip ,computer problems from the beginnig, coolant leaks, oil leaks, needed brakes after 10k the list goes on and on, It's to bad because I have 2 landrovers a 69 and a 74 and I've had very few problems with these old classics but the new ones are a disgrace, do yourself and your family afavor and stay away!

It is a sporty veh, looks nice...

Weakness:

It rides very rough..had CV joint replaced as well..didn't not fix the problem. All of the above...stereo speakers also crackle...

I bought my Land Rover Freelander 12/2003 after having two wonderful Honda's that had very few issues at 150,000 miles when I got rid of them.
03/2005: coolant reservoir was repaced for the FIRST time. 12/06 half way in between Memphis, TN and St. Louis, MO with 49,149 miles on it the transmission went completely out. A month in the shop, rental car, and $4500 later I got it back. Land Rover would not honor my warranty 50,000 miles or 4 years. The 4 years had expired 10/06. Less than a week after I got my Land Rover back it completely overheated. I drove it to the nearest service station, the dealership was 20 minutes away. They replaced a coolant hose. I drove for a few miles. Overheated. Drove it back to the service station and they said the cam shaft seal had blown off from pressure from the engine. Had Land Rover towed to dealership. Cam shaft seal replaced, coolant hose, and coolant reservoir $924....4/17/07: Land Rover overheats again...take to service station. They asked if it had been worked on recently because the coolant reservoir was not attached properly and the coolant reservoir was empty due to the coolant spilling out all over the engine. They filled the reservoir, told me to take it to the dealer to look at when I could. Drove a few miles...completely overheated and shut down. Under the hood the coolant reservoir was completely empty and there was oil all over the engine like when the cam shaft seal blew off...had it towed to Land Rover. Engine and timing belt need to be replaced. Service advisor then said that the coolant reservoir had not been worked on in Jan...when I confronted her in writing she retracted and said that it had been replaced BUT the techinician has checked it and there are no cracks...estimate $6780. Do not buy this vehicle, it is a lemon.

Strength:

This particular model, it's the 2 door, and the rear roof is removable. That's why I purchased this particular model. I love my car, It rocks! It goes anywhere, but apparently the engine is only good for 66k miles, and TRUST me, if the Service Engineer of a LR Dealership says they are a piece of junk. LISTEN!! Unfortunately, i am now paying $400 per mo for a LR that is in a service Dept, with NO engine in it, waiting for a "brand new, junk yard europen engine" to be found. Very depressing. So I am telling everyone that will listen, "LAND ROVER DOES NOT PROVIDE CUSTOMER SERVICE. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF OVER THE YEARS YOU'VE SPENT NEARLY $100K PURCHASING THEIR CARS."

Weakness:

Crappy Customer Service to follow through with the CRAPPY equipment. The sad part is that the Service Manager at Santa Barbara Land Rover told me to "get rid of it!", not just once, but three times!

I am writing because I have been denied the service that I deserve.

I am currently on my 3rd Land Rover:
2004 Discovery VIN Salty19464A860883
2002 Freelander VIN Salny22202A207602
2003 Freelander VIN Salny12283A248264 (66,830 miles-automobile in question)

I traded in my 2004 Discovery, for a 2003 Freelander SE. Being a long time Land Rover owner and familiar with their history, I am well aware of the pros and cons that come with owning a Land Rover. What attracted me to this particular model was the fact that it is the only LR model with a detachable back end. As previously stated, I am a long time loyal owner and lover of the Land Rover; the “driving experience” sold me on Land Rovers from the beginning and I have come to depend on them over the years.

In September 2006, I moved to California to take a challenging new job offer at Vandenberg Air Force Base near Lompoc. Although the Freelander has exhibited occasional signs of overheating and fluid leaking/consumption since May 2006, the symptoms became more pronounced and more frequent since the move…smoking from the engine compartment, continually leaking fluids, inability to retain fluids, “HOT” engine light and scorched anti-freeze smell. I took it to the nearest service center willing to look at a Land Rover, since the nearest LR dealer is about 75 miles away and I was sure it wouldn’t make the trip intact.

Harmon Automotive in Buellton, CA performed a service check and diagnosed a blown head gasket and burned-out piston rings, among other things. I then contacted Land Rover of Santa Barbara for further instructions and was later informed by LR Corp Office (after a beautiful game of ring-around-the-rosy) that I would have to bring the Freelander to the nearest LR licensed dealer for service (Land Rover of Santa Barbara).

Lucky for me, Harmon Automotive was kind enough to offer the tow service since the vehicle was in no condition to drive. Land Rover of Santa Barbara was able to quickly verify that Harmon Automotive’s findings were indeed correct; however, I was informed by Leo (your Land Rover Corp Representative) that Land Rover would not cover repair costs because the engine had been removed by a non-Land Rover licensed dealer (even though the Freelander had a history of this overheating problem).

After the shock wore off, I was informed that I could write LR Corporate and argue my case. So here’s my case:

2003 Freelander’s Service History, regarding it’s over heating issues:

1. March 2006, bought from Euro-Leith Land Rover of Raleigh, North Carolina.
2. 13 May 2006 (48, 021), overheat and engine lights came on, lost fluids, smoking, died on interstate – replaced cooling fan control module, performed 36,000 mile service w/ coolant service and brake fluid flush.
3. 19 May 2006 (48,685), overheat and engine lights came on, transmission stuck/wouldn’t shift – replaced throttle body assembly.
4. May 2006-Feb 2007, continued to overheat, lose fluids, smoke…exhibiting previously unresolved symptoms with increasing frequency and magnitude.
5. Feb 2007 – provided Land Rover the opportunity to show a long-time loyal customer that they still stand behind their product, despite numerous internet consumer reviews to the contrary.

I am asking that you reconsider your decision and provide the repair costs/service that I deserve as a loyal Land Rover customer. I would very much like to be able to enjoy my Freelander now and other Land Rovers in the future.

I had written this letter, obviously, asking for assistance from Land Rover. Their reply..."Sorry, we regret, blah blah blah."

When I bought this piece of crap, the sales people introduced me to the service manager and made me feel at home. Of course when I finally had a problem or should I say problem(s) they treated me like some jack a** of the streets. This is the worst SUV I have ever driven, hands down. The first problem with these cars are the coolant system design. Big flaws for light weight SUV, you should not have to replace a radiator with less then 35K miles. Second problem is the motor in these vehicles.. Every seal and connection to it seems to have problems.. I'm talking everything from oil leaks to poor performance and idleing issues. I think Land Rover in general makes junk and will never ever buy another product from this company.

Strength:

Handles in the snow great.

Weakness:

Costly servicing. Limited to dealerships to service it.

The Freelander started off as a good vehicle until about the 40K mark. The big problem with any Landrover is not the car itself, it is the fact you can only get them serviced by Landrover. And that mean big money. Everytime I took the car into the Davis Landrover Dealer in Solon, Ohio, I spent an average of $400 for a routine service!!!

The worst was when I got it back at 40K and there was a distinct ticking sound. I called the dealership and told them of the problem, they said it was bad gas and I should use Premium Gas. That did not help and I took it back in before the 50K warranty ran out. Unfortunately, do to circumstances on our end, my Wife and I never pressed the issue. 40K miles later, we finally took it to another Land Rover Dealership. It turns out that it was a broken air intake regulator that was flapping in the manifold. $900 to repair!! I didn't have the money so we waited. We took it back to the Davis Automotive dealership in Solon Ohio and they diagnosed it the same, but wanted $2300.

So the bottom line, don't buy a Landrover unless you own the dealership. This car is a good car from a performance and handling perspective. But you will pay up the nose to get it fixed!!!

The service provided at Land Rover Massapequa is the absolute worst service I have ever encountered. I now must reflect back at my decision to purchase a Land Rover as well as my recommendations to others.

I have never been spoken to as rudely as I had been by the Service Manager Michael. He is a disgrace to the customer service industry as a whole and why anyone would allow him to be a Manager in a service based industry is beyond me. I found Michael to arrogant and condescending simply because I am female and assumes because I am a woman, I must know nothing about motor vehicles. I look forward to never having to do business with him again.

In today’s highly competitive market, repeat customers should be encouraged, not spat upon.

So far, I have learned from this experience that, Land Rover is a company that does not stand by their product. Further more, I have also learned how not to provide service to customers who pay large amounts of money to own a vehicle that will only result in several head aches later on down the road.

My car has spent almost all of the past month in the shop and as of now I still need a nedw motor and about three to four more weeks with out my vehicle.

BUYERS BEWARE!!!!!

Strength:

Great offroad/inclement weather- driving in the snow isn't fun anymore.

Weakness:

Though I have not yet had MAJOR issues, there is a general concern among owners about head gaskets, seals (oil), radiators, and brakes (note: do not use the LR recommended brakes, my mechanic had put quality pads rated for AWD, and the pads lasted twice as long as the LR ones did).
Expensive extended warranty program
Terrible on gas

Though I have not had any major problems yet (just a bunch a of recalls), I am getting very nervous reading some of these reviews- because I am starting to see some of the same problems. For example:
1.)LR is refusing to fix a "seaping" head gasket, because there is a difference between "seaping" and "dripping"- at 47k, this is sure to bite me later.
2.Transmission slipping b/t 2/3k RPM
3. Aforementioned speaker issue has been fixed
4. Radiator issues

I am just really nervous that I will be stuck with a bad engine, and still be paying the car off.

Handles very well, it's smooth. All wheel drive is nice. Shifts smoothly. Overall, I like it.

Weakness:

If you don't like your 2.5L V6, don't BUY YOUR VEHICLE! They made the motor this size for a reason. They could have put a 4 cylinder 2.5.. and they didn't. You should be glad about that.

I just bought my 1 owner Freelander with 75k miles on it. Called Land Rover to check for service history - all was good. Only oil changes, nothing serious.. so I bought it! I love it. It handles very well for an SUV, and the all wheel drive has helped me in the snow numerous times. Anyways, I don't understand why people give this vehicle such a bad rep. If you ask me, I am willing to bet owners are expecting too much out of it. If you don't like your Land Rover, too bad, you bought it and you had a chance to do your research to base an opinion. Whatever, I personally have a different perspective thus far. I certainly hope I don't have any future problems with it. Not ONE yet.
