Strength:

Excellent off-road capabilities. Very sure-footed vehicle on the pavement, wet or dry. It definitely imparts a sense of safety and security to the occupants. It's looks exude confidence and adventure and it won't fail you in it's duty as a off-roader.

Weakness:

Substandard build quality for something the Queen and the Pope rides in (not together of course). I am afraid, this one factor is making the new H2 worth looking into. Since this is not an econo class car, I won't say anything about gas mileage but be warned that it consumes quite a bit. Definitely get an extended warranty, you will need it.

I was imressed by Land Rover vehicles ever since a safari to East Africa. The series Rover I was in, performed flawlessly in the grasslands of Mara Game Reserve and even forded an overflowing Lake Nakuru with ease. I had longed to own one of their vehicles ever since. My imression of the vehicle after owning one is that like most English cars, they do well what they are built to do but not without the quirks. I also own a Lotus Esprit (another English make) and it is a nightmare when it comes to reliabilty yet an amazing machine when it comes to handling and performance. My friends think I am nuts to own two English cars and sometimes I do regret when I have to foot maintenance/repair bills. With the RR, I was wise enough to foot extra cash for an extended warranty to 100k miles and that has saved me a bundle already. As far as offroading capabilities go, I haven't driven anything that equals the RR. It never ceases to amaze me how it gets me out of impossible situations, everytime. Humvees may be better in some cases, but it's wide stance won't allow it to traverse through certain places where I have taken my RR. I agree with others that reviewed the car; it's luxurious appointments make a hard day's off roading a breeze. I do have qualms about it's built and the poorly thought design. The switches for windows are placed in an awkward place in the cabin. I don't know how a designer can forgive himself for such a blunder. I hate it! And so will you. Although, it is corrected in the 2003 models. The audio controls on the steering wheel do not light up in the dark. You will hate that too as I do. The worst one is the sunroof visor. I pinch my finger everytime I try to pull it shut because of it's close position to the front lip. These are very basic flaws. I also hate it when it crawls at 25MPH on a hilly ascent on the highway. The cheapest Amercan SUVs zip by me. The alternator is the quirkiest of them all. It fails quite often. Not to mention all the rattles that even the dealership can't fix and everytime they make such abnormalities sound like a feature in the car. Actually, I think the worst thing about the car are the people involved with it, dealerships/mechanics etc. They do not take complaints seriously and are quick to point out that all the problems the car has is the price you pay to own the Best 4x4xFar. I am seriously considering a Hummer H2 to a

Strength:

Strong chassis, good tranny, best axle articulation of any 4 wheel drive, great seats and good all round vision

Weakness:

Poor dealer support, gas mileage, no cup holders

If you are into comfortable off-roading, then a Classic range-rover 1987-92 is the vehicle to buy. If you get the later versions, you find the air suspension expensive to fix, but can be replaced with coil springs easily. Stay away from the dealers and find a good mechanic, the dealers are the cause of most complaints with these vehicles. These trucks will outperform any other stock truck in off-roading and will do it in complete comfort. When properly cared for they are reliable. Put on high lift springs and good tires, then join a landrover club and have a great time with people who care. I have owned my truck for five years and have no major problems and now has 130,000 miles on it and going strong.Do your research before you buy, lots of information on the net, take people’s advice with a grain of salt.

EVERYTHING MENTIONED ABOVE

Unexceptional in most aspects. After paying $760/month for the past 2 years, I eagerly await my 3 year lease termination! What a list of problems! I though Land Rover had worked out all British glitches by now! was I wrong! I have now wasted so much of my hard earned money. My first complaint is the serious lack of power for such an expensive truck, and for a return of only 10mpg! As far as problems, I've had 2 blown head gaskets, leveling suspension would not raise from low setting, makes made horrible grinding noise, needed a valve job at 21,000 miles, crazy cost of parts/labor, and awful service quality! I will never buy a Land Rover again. Whoever says Range Rovers are made to handle anything are nuts. I now have 27,000 miles on it, and just patiently awaiting to get rid of it!

Strength:

Unparalleled 4wd drivetrain. One of the best stock off road vehicles, that can transverse almost anything without modifications. British class.

Weakness:

British quirks- but they almost make you love it more. $40 a tank refill and insane insurance rates but this is an elite vehicle.

I love this truck, it has class which is not captured by later makers entrys into the luxury Suv segment. For the people slamming the truck and putting chrome on it, you've missed the point. This truck has been made to be driven off road every day. The Range Rover has been designed and tested to specifications higher than any other SUV; for example the engine is run at redline for hours at 45 degree inclines. The truck is truly an amazing duality. I reccomend it to anyone who goes camping, pull boats, and is taking that road less traveled by.

Strength:

Style, off-road capabilities, luxury amenities.

Weakness:

Price, maintenance, questionable build quality, gas milage (although shouldn't complain if buying a SUV), cheap looking blinker, wiper controls, cupholders are a joke,

Like others who have bought the RR or any luxury vechicle, it was all about perception, a feeling of status. Now that I've had the RR for sometime, its living up to its hype. On-road driving has thus far been excellent, although the Rover does makes some strange/quirky noises, but ride quality is excellent. You feel secure in this vehicle. If your expecting this vehicle to drive like a car, forget it!!, go buy a BMW X5 or that cheap egg-looking Lexus RX. But if your looking to go off-road, this is the vehicle you want, have had opportunities to take it off-road and it handles great. Granted, I have not ridden in a TLC or Lexus LX off-road, but these vehicles lacks the style & panache of the Rover. Its a very expensive vehicle and not for everyone, but so are the TLC, LX, ML, H1 and X5. Its matter of taste, one word of advice before choosing the Rover, be prepared to spend on maintenance, just had both front/back breaks & drums replace, cost me a $1000 (the cheapest after shopping around). Also, after doing alot of research, this vehicle is known to have quality problems, so look the vehicle over very carefully before buying and then pray the car gods are smiling on you. If you can afford it, buy it. If people ask or look at you funny (they will) because you drive one, just think of it this way, why is that person driving a toyota or hyundia, because they like the vehicle and can afford it, just like you in your Rover.

Strength:

Power, acceleration, front end support, agility at slower speeds, smell of leather and British snobbery!

Weakness:

Gas mileage, of course. But I have more than enough money from my fraudulant medical practice to pay for any problems!

Must say that this is the total awesome snob SUV! A good friend of mine in SC named Dr. Wopifen suggested the truck to appeal to my growing need for ego inflation and a syndrome known only to a few called "mineisbiggerthanyours." I wish everyone had the opportunity to own one of these quite fine vehicles! I am certainly glad that I forked over 150,000 big bucks for a car! I could have bought a beach house or lake house for this price. But then again, mine is bigger than yous!

Strength:

Rock solid vehicle. With the air suspension and larger tires, traction control, etc. I''ve tackled some pretty fun trails that most stock vehicles would have trouble with.

Weakness:

Expensive to keep running but I''m learning to do most DIY level projects like shocks, brake pads, belts, etc. Gas mileage also stinks (13 mpg) around town but not much better on highway either.

This vehicle delivers as promised. Bought it used with 46k miles (w/12 month warranty) for both on-road and off-road excursions (back country camping in CO, 4wd''ing in Moab). On-road usage is OK (recently improved with new shocks) but off-road it rocks. Slowly upgrading it with more off-roadable components like OME shocks, 32" tires, additional lights, under-carriage protection. Only got stuck once so far when high-centered in a snow field at 10,000 feet.

First 4wd owned but was looking for either a used Range Rover or Toyota Land Cruiser and am now glad the RR came available first.
