Strength:

Everything mentioned above. Did say reliable and vault like?

Weakness:

Tire mileage.

I have had my ML350 for 1 year and have registered 22,000 miles. The vehicle is great. Quiet, comfortable, roomy, vault like, and zero mechanical issues. The only issue is the need to replace the Dunlop tires at 16,ooo miles. Expect 15mpg to 18mpg depending on driving habits.

hard to change oil? FSS is whenever car will tell you it needs an oil change? WOW, computer can think...

The CD changer is prewired, but the fiberoptic cable is NOT the same as the 2002 ML 320 model (which is available from Crutchfield cataglog). Can anyone tell me where the oil round cartrige is? I went under the car and saw something round, but it has 4 little nuts/bolts on one end... not sure if even I was looking at the right thing.. any help?

Strength:

A solid drive. True 4x4 capablities. Not outrageously huge, like some other SUV's (we have a 2003 Sequoia which is monstrous next to the ML). Quality of the interior is great.

Weakness:

The window switch broke the first year, but no problems with it or anything else since. As expected, cost of maintenance is high.

So far so good. My first Mercedes. It drove extremely well, and after pricing it next to the 2001 Acura MDX and Lexus RX, it seemed worth the money (name brand). Had only one electrical problem... driver side window switch broke. Seems like such a petty problem for a vehicle carrying the Mercedes name ($36k is a chunk of change, too). But no other problems since. Before we got out 2003 Sequoia, we took the ML to the 4x4 area of the Outer Banks, NC last summer. It drove great! Never got stuck in the soft sand-- even passed up a 1 ton Dodge pickup (the kind with 2 wheels on each rear axel) that got stuck. We had a full load: 2 adults, 2 kids, 2 dogs (one a great dane) and a truck load of cargo on top. Very solid. It's 3 years old this July, and I'm not looking forward to any potential maintenance problems. Maybe time to trade up?

Strength:

Powerful engine, handling, safety, prestige, stereo, beuatiful wood trim on the interior (is it real or plastic?).

Weakness:

Little things go wrong too frequently for a car of this price and nameplate. In a mere 15,000 miles, five small repairs plus one manufacturer recall have brought it back to the dealer for warrantee work. I have a 10 year old Mitsubishi Montero that spoiled me by needing only one minor repair.

I bought it used with 5,000 miles from a stock broker who went bust in 2001. Saved myself $10K. It is a good looking vehicle. Lots of power. Has a tuned sophisicated engine growl that is a bit more macho than you would expect from a MB. I've added a black bra, tow hitch, chrome tailpipe tip, Xenon headlights and K&N airfilter. I enjoy doing my own oil changes. Overall I give the vehicle mixed reviews: It is not as troublesome as some reviews I've read here, but it has had more things go wrong with it than a vehicle that lists for nearly $50K should. This civilized SUV has 15,000 miles on it from 3 years of light use and the following things - none of them major - have brought it back for warrantee work: Cracked exterior plastic pieces, a battery that had two of its six cells quit, brakes that won't stop squealing (sometimes they are so loud as to be embarassing), a glove box door that fell off one of its hinges, and a driver's electric window switch that stopped working. The dealer did all the work professionally (although they could not fix the brake squeal). I expect that little items like these will continue to fail or break - the design and construction quality just isn't superior. Yet, the vehicle has its redeeming strong points: The engine is powerful and smooth, the transmission flawlessly smooth and versatile, the massive brakes (though sometimesloud) are well matched to the huge 11" wide tires (that's right: 11") and can stop the vehicle amazingly quickly. It has more airbags in more places than any other vehicle. It feels very safe and surefooted - even at 130 mph (it can go faster than that). It has tight, solid handling. And when polished up, it turns heads and gets stares of envy. The design seems to have become a classic. I have a hunch that its high tech 4x4 transmission would do pretty well off the road, but risk a scratch? The Bose stereo/CD player is very nice. One dissapointment peculiar to Alaska is that the CD Navigation system doesn't have maps for here. This is not so much a problem in finding places (we have few roads here) but it makes the large blue TV screen on the dash seem pretty silly. Ditto the built in but non-functional telephone system and the satellite emergency aide. A couple of other high tech innovations are of questionable advantage over their more old fashioned but reliable predecessors: Windsheild wipers that are activated by the amount of water on the windsheild (I'd rather have the timed intermittent ones) auto dimming rearview mirrors (I see a big repair bill in the future for this high tech system) that are no better than the old "day/night" flipper variety. But, all in all, I'm happy with the car.

I just miss control switches on the steering wheel. A bit expensive too maintain but again its Mercedes.

So far its wonderful. Although after reading the reviews I was a bit scared. I love to drive it. It handles beautifully just like my car. Very solid and safe. I would buy it again.

Just doesn't cut it..

I have just read all these horrible reviews on this car. I recently traded in my 01 S430 for this SUV. I wish I wouldn't have. So, I have had this car less than a month and I am going Monday to trade it in for a 04 S430. Those I never had any problems with.

-alot of electrical failiures have been back to the dealership 8 times.

Im back again with more problems! since i last wrote a review at the beginning of the year there were a few things wrong, like the parking sensors that have just been done this week but havent been painted yet, there is now a water leak that has come up in the last 2 weeks, the preglow that heats the diesel is faulty and the light keeps coming on for it, the dealership makes me laugh its that poor.

SAFETY; Sweet Engine!;Good "Truck" attributes;Quiet, luxurious interior. Good stereo (upgraded Bose). Nice leather.

Weakness:

Perfect so far, and way more enjoyable to drive than my previous Yukon (great car, but big). I traded for the ML after moving to DC. Felt a smaller vehicle was needed for the urban traffic environment. Drove all the mid-size SUVs, and kept coming back to the Mercedes. Just feels more safe/solid, and none of the others met my needs for towing and off-road ablility. Liked the Land Rover, but dismal reliability and horrible dealer experience (Alexandria) ruled it out. I think the bad reviews on this car are a small part of the total--the few people I know with these are highly pleased. The new crossover SUVs weren't up to task, simply car frames, whereas this is a purpose-built truck. ASC dealership was great.

warranty service representive, electric window controls, brakes, electrical breakdowns. very unreliable-don't take on no trips. crankshaft and pulley and belt.

This is the poorest excuse for a Mercedes. Pages and pages of repairs.5 Five pick-ups by flat bed toll trucks. Can let you borrow a car while your is being fixed because we have so many and we would have any to sell. But go to BMW and they will. When my power steering hose blew off on Christmas day we had no vehicle. Then 10 months latter the crank shaft pulley defaulted and burned up the oil pan $2000 damage and no sooner drive off the lot then check engine light came on. I belive that the power steering fluid did something to that belt on the pulley to cause the damage. How can a pulley come apart or like some just fall out if there is no problem. When I complained to MBUSA in New Jersey Customer relations; the jest, "We did our part your our of warranty its your problem now. I had such a bad experience with mercedes service and now find out that others have had simular bad experience i can see why they are falling down in customer satisfaction. And very unreliable.
