Xterra XE 4x4 (V6 auto trans)
Strength:
Roof rack, truck chassis, great price/value, smooth/quiet ride (even at 75 mph+), handles great, engine is very quiet, lots of room, standard anti-lock brakes, looks great, comfortable seating & good leg room, good sounding stereo, cruise control, plentiful tie downs...
Weakness:
poor gas mileage, could use a little more power but is sufficient, a little bumpy at times (but what do you expect from a truck), if you want a smoother ride, buy a car...but don't expect to go offroad. What can I say...the best truck for the money. Yes, I said truck, as the Xterra is based on the highly rated Nissan Frontier. Comfortable, smooth, quiet ride. I just drove for over 500 miles in one day over various highways at over 75+ mph and it drove great (quite, very smooth ride). Then I drove it in horrible, snowy weather in Tahoe (over 24" in a two day period). Four wheel drive worked like a charm. As other's were pulling over to the side of the road to put on chains or turned back to go home the Highway Patrol looked at my tires and the truck and waived me through. I felt very safe with the anti-lock brakes. All of my friends are very envious. A friend who has a Jeep Grand Cherokee wishes he would have bought an Xterra (says the ride of the Xterra blows away his Jeep). Interior looks great too. Overall I have been very impressed with the Xterra and the service I have received from the dealership. Got them to throw in a ski rack too - very useful! Additionally, I really like the features of the Xterra (roof rack, waterproof seats, tie downs, etc.)...this truck was made to be functional! Got it with all the "packages" - pretty much it's an SE! I ski, camp, mountain bike, 4x4, scuba dive, etc...if you're looking for an SUV that actually does what an SUV is suppose to do and you're actually gonna use it as an off road SUV (not a glorified station wagon, SUV looking wannabe) this is it! What else would you expect from Motortrend's SUV of the Year?!?!? Similar Products Used: Jeep Grand Cherokee (my friend hates his, "very unreliable"...his words), Nissan Frontier, Toyota 4-runner (nice, but for 10 to 15k more? i don't think so), Rav-4 (too small), Suzuki Grand Vitara (ditto), Ford Escape (yuk!, a friend of mine works at an auto plant and heard nothing but bad things about the Escape..including many recalls)...best SUV for the price, more room, better value, better ride. |

Weakness:
slightly underpowered, but a different air filter could boost horses some. You know, I cant understand why anyone would buy a 4x2 suv. That is like kissing your sister while drinking a cup of decaf. This is a TRUCK. It rides like a truck it handles like a truck and I couldnt be happier. Its great on the beach and back in the woods. I love the interior. Mine came with the 6 cd, trailer hitch, and power everything. It is also an automatic tranny. Mineral blue is a nice color. But I would have taken pink with polka dots if the price was right. Similar Products Used: Jeep Wrangler-just as tough off road but the X has a nicer, quieter ride. |

SE 4WD 5-Speed
Strength:
Cheap Price, 4WD works well. Clutch engagement is excellent. Front seats are extremely comfortable. Backseats have a lot of legrooms. Fairly big trunk area. Neoprene Seat Cover! Lots places to store little things. Factory roof rack we can mount kayak stacker and ski rack directly to, so we saved money on not buying aftermarket racks. Very useful gear basket. Step-up bars help us putting stuff on the rack. The truck is very stylish overall.
Weakness:
3.3L V6 engine is weak and yet sucks gas like a V8 at the same time. It's mileage is about same as the 4.7L V8 in the Grand Cherokee. 5-speed transmission does shift well when it's cold. The long bus-ish shifter is terrible. Body rolls a lot in the corners. Stereo is a little weak. Lots wind noise from the sunroof which is not useful at all since it only pops up, and that's only when the gear basket it not there. Roof rack is too narrow to hold a lot of gear, and is very high and difficult to reach. Trunk window does not open (how much more would that cost Nissan?), and would have been very useful. The fuel tank's size combined with the terrible mileage means gas station stops occur frequently. If I buy the Xterra again, it'll be the supercharged version with automatic transmission. For the price of the Xterra, also consider Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute. They're really cars that are tall, and have better engines. Which is not a bad thing unless roads become terriblly bad like pure mud, rocks, snow. They're smaller than the Xterra so that's a minus. Similar Products Used: Jeep Grand Cherokee 4WD V8. A lot more powerful, and yet consume gas at about same rate as the Xterra. Front leather seats are terrible unsupportive. Holds a lot cargos. No feet room for rear passengers. Very easy to use 4WD that's extremely effective, better than the Xterra. |

Strength:
Comfortable, leg room, sporty looks, not too bulky, smooth ride, priced reasonable compared to others. Absolutely love it despite all the problems with the dealership. I look good in it!!!
Weakness:
Poor MPG, Not alot of pick up and go, don't care for rack but can't buy the truck without it, Dealership has the worst customer service I've ever since and my husband works at their Toyota Dealership. So you would have thought that I would have gotten great service. They are extremely slow at processing the paper work. Paint coating is very poor - they blamed it acid rain, not. After have the vehicle for 2 days and it did not rain, but the temps reached 90 and the coating is starting to bubble. If anyone else is haing the same problem please let me know what your dealership said. The relay switch was bad. I've only put 300 miles the truck. They have had my truck more than I have, but that's okay because I'll keep putting the mileage on their new XTerras. No Vanitys. Back seat hard to get in and out of. Love the vehicle.I wanted a SUV, but the not anything too big. I'm used to a small car. The XTerra is perfect and looks and rides great. Lots of cargo room, not a lot of compartment room. An Expense Look For Reasonable Price. Similar Products Used: Rav4(Too small)Passport(Poor handling & too pricy)Escape(Too many recalls)CRV(Looks Cheap)Montro Sport(Too Pricy)Aztec(Too weird) |

Functional roof rack, and side rails.Solid frame construction giving the upper hand in knowing if you t-Bone another Suv you'll be the undisputed winner.Bright headlights , super bright inside map lights, the tail lights are placed properly and very visable 3rd brake light, for safety.Nissan is written on the outside which means when you turn the key she cranks up for you!!! Its not a ford or chevy or mechanics best friend
Weakness:
a rattle in my dash somewhere??? The Key is about twice the size of my other keys, but then again Xterra is twice the ride! the xterra is comfortable to drive, sit or relax in.the Nissan badge on the front grill is my main benefit I know it will perform far past other manufacturer's engine and drive train life span.Price is great.Lots of room. My Xterra has leather seats and a CD player.I felt confident in knowing Nissan engineered a xterra so you can walk away from a accident alive, with using crumple zones and air bags, with side door beams, abs breaks.I love my Xterra.and of coarse my mom didn't have to co-sign!!! Price!!If you want a truck with style function and reliability, Buy the xterra. If you have a extra $50,000 then buy a status symbol of a higher degree, but who'll know you didn't spend 35,000-40,000 on your xterra???? you'll only realize it when you have money left over, you'll never miss that you didn't with ride ,comfort, power, handling, good looks, roominess, quietness, and quality, not to mention that all mankind will benefit from having a well educated suv buyer near by if they are having a emergency, the xterra has a first aid kit. Similar Products Used: Nissan Pathfinder I like having the spare tire underneath a lot better because on the back its always in your way, Unless of coarse you back into a pole or something :0) |

Great look. I bought mine November 1999 and still have no regrets. I love the fact that it still turns heads. My kids think we're cool...
Weakness:
My only real complaint is the gas milage especially with the soaring prices. I stopped and talked with another owner yesterday and asked him what he thought. His only complaint--gas milage. Minor pet peeve is the location of the cruise on/off button. Suggestion--leather seat option. My kids and I take road trips often. This car is fun to scoot around town in and is comfortable on long trips. I love having the spare tire under the car because that means I can buy more flowers and plants and mulch for my garden...which really might not be a such a good thing... Similar Products Used: Last two cars: Ford Explorer and Jeep Cherokee. Both were great SUV's but I love the Xterra. |

Decent off-roader, but not superb.
Weakness:
Poor gas milage while very underpowered. Disappointed. Replaced right rear body mount after 26 miles. The creaks and rattles are numerous. Highway ride was choppy even after replacing the very cheap stock tires with a set of computer matched, BFG AT's. Tracking never worked right after 4 visits to dealer for realigntment. Insufficient power to move a 2+ ton vehicle. Poor visibility, especially with the tinted windows. Cheap interior construction... "Everything you need, nothing you don't"?, that's for sure. I new it was a minimalist vehicle, but geez, the pillow like seats started to pill, and weaken further after only 10k miles. The headlights were weak. And the steering was so inprecise, I found myself continually having to correct the tracking on the highway. Similar Products Used: 1999 Jeep Cherokee SE 4.0L 4x4... The X had better road manners, but lacks the power of the Jeep. |

Love the height. This is my newest vehicle after 12 years with a Pulsar. The height definitely for me is a plus. It has a lot of room for storage, at least if I compare to my last vehicle. I love the look overall.
Weakness:
I would like a little more kick in acceleration, but it suits me; I'm not a drag racer. Spend more for gas, but I expected that as well. Although I haven't had this vehicle long, I will admit I this vehicle has been a real pleasure for me so far. At least at this point, no regrets. I had been in the market for an SUV type vehicle, and when I first spotted an Xterra, was intrigued by its styling. It certainly draws attention. I hope this vehicle will last me as long as my first vehicle (89 Nissan Pulsar), which held its own for 12 years. Similar Products Used: This is my first SUV, but in comparison to my dad's '95 Pathfinder (family obviously is a Nissan fan)it looks as though I have more features. My dad does not even have a 6cd changer, and his Pathfinder is an SE. |
